Warrington? right next to Burtonwood, where they modified, repaired (?) and scrapped many B-17’s and where even large bits of aircraft have been dug up recently

Not that much of a goodwill gesture: as I understood it there was need for considerable compulsion by the Ministry/government before they gave any assistance whatsoever to a rival.

From what I can remember, the compulsion was regarding NOT getting certain upcoming/further contracts if they didn’t help Napier, so much for all pulling together for the war effort

Then and now taken today. Quite fitting that the current runway is where the old hut once stood.

I do wonder if it was removed during WWII and replaced later as it’s current location would have put it on the southern edge of the East West runway as it crossed the road back then. Not something you would want at the edge of a runway!
    Nice bit of history regardless

The paddle blades helped increase performance if i remember correctly. I don`t know when they were fitted, possibly when she was restored post war perhaps?.

One of the photos over on WiX dated May ’45 shows her with the paddle blade props.

Staravia of Ascot Berkshire recycled a lot of RCAF aircraft at Prestwick, dozens of RCAF F-86’s ended up in their Ascot yard and in the late ’70’s large amounts of the F-86’s were still there. I had many an exploration around their yard, but I never saw any CF-100 parts, I can’t remember seeing any pics of CF-100’s at their Lasham yard either, maybe Staravia didn’t/lost the bid on them as there was little of any use/value to recycle in the CF-100’s?

At 4.24 in during the ‘Swamp Ghost’ find pictures from the OP’s post, there is a B-17 with a broken rear fuselage, the faded paint shows an RAF roundel on a wing, fuselage & tail markings?

A couple of notes to add
Down House was about 1 mile west of Blandford St Mary and estates of the day could well encompass many farms in the surrounding area, so a farm a couple of miles away could well be still part of the ‘Estate’
Andy Saunders has a pic of the Do 17 at Nutford Farm in his book Luftwaffe Bombers in the Battle of Britain
The link below should take you to the correct page to vie the pic

As much is it would be good to hear and see one at work surely if it is that temperamental and has such small tolerances it is a liability.

Surely if they were that bad, the RAF would not have had 80 odd Sabre powered Mk 5’s converted to target tugs starting in 1949, they were finally withdrawn for service in 1955, 4 years after the Centaurus Mk II’s in Europe.
I fear that its early operational problems with the Sabre lingered on in the minds of many, long after they had been cured.

DaveR’s list from 10 years ago, with JDK’s edit on the worldwide ones
A few changes have happened since then

I have the rough outline of the list I have…I don’t tend to collect the engine numbers/mark so have added where I happen to have been given them (many of the recovered/restored engines are not recognisable anyway). I look forward to comments, corrections and hopefully additions 🙂

Total of 35 Sabres listed here…there are about 4 that have question marks over them (duplicate or did they ever exist) and I haven’t included the Guernsey example in the total (currently in the sea)

Anybody have the time and care to consolidate all the info into an up to date list?
    A previous thread https://forum.keypublishing.com/forum/historic-aviation/89431-napier-sabre-list
With 3 different teams building airworthy Typhoons and a Tempest (or should that be Tempests now?), I would have thought that any available Sabres or parts would be known about/already acquired, or maybe not?
