As to a friendly reception – if you had approached the people behind the counter and asked them any questions you would have found that they would be only too happy to talk to you and (depending on who you managed to speak to ) you could have got a very good and informative tour. The only problem with this is that someone needs to man the shop (the museum wouldn’t get money coming in if there is no one there to collect it )
Troy
I think you described the staff being RE active, e.g.. waiting to be asked, when it makes a BIG difference if they were PRO active e.g.. offering to help, even if as you suggested they couldn’t for what ever reason, just a brief explanation to say that they were sorry but had to man the shop/new…etc. & that all the other staff were on holiday/at an airshow or what ever.
A lot of people are too ‘shy’ to ask questions, & just that first brief contact could lead to another volunteer !
Would you rather visitors walk away having formed there own (possibly negative ) opinions or walk away being informed & thinking how helpful & friendly the staff were even if they couldn’t actually help much ?
AT6 / Black knight
In one of my favourite books -Fighter command- American Fighters in original WWII color
The majority of P-51D aerials (85%) are SILVER, 10% BLACK (without invasion strips) 5% could be dark brown, olive or faded black, it doesn’t get any more accurate than that.
Just search eBay (worldwide)type in hobbycraft or buchon & you get this one, Spanish markings not BofB im afraid, just keep searching.
I saw a bit of Question time, something about the Heritage Secutary stopping a painting from leaving the county last week.’We'(the nation) had to buy it for £30,000,000 ! just for a painting,Richard Branson said if that could be done for a painting then it could & should be done for Concorde.
At first I thought that mike was right, but then the wing shapes give it away. The Albacores wings are nearly identical in shape, the Swordfish has a much larger upper wing, as can be made out in pic. No.1
Good call by JDK on pic. 12, Fulmar. As per marking ?, how about one of the Vichy French operated Fulmars ?
I should have said Sea Gladiator, as it looks like there could be a hook there, & its a naval theme !
Macky42
Yep. 9 is a Skua or Roc
But I think No.11 is a Gladiator, correct looking rudder
Thanks Steve.
It was Saab B17’s, I did a search & came up the info that 2 B17’s were recovered to South Africa in ’99. I would assume that it was the same team that recovered 2 (?)Firefly’s also in ’99 back to SA.
That still leaves the possibility (reported as being seen) that some more Firefly’s were still in Ethiopia only 4 years ago.
Another recovery team is coming back to the site to recover the wrecked items. Like the valuable engines props etc tailplane and wings.
I vaguely remember that the engines were recovered soon after the fire ?
Marauder
Hence my question, I do not know, maybe the last ones have been recovered. As you said, somebody must know.
Other type’s ? any idea what ?
Marauder
I think that must be the Canadian ones, 1 of which I know is well on its way to flying again.
The SA ones are in storage ?
Have I missed another report on the last ones being recovered ?
involving 9 cylinders, 18 pistons, 3 crankshafts
I thought it was 18 cyl.(6 per side) 36 pistons & 3 cranks
The Deltic had engines from a JU86 I think…
The Deltic used an engine (x2) built by Napiers, it was originaly designed as a fast boat MTB engine. It used 3 cranks in a ‘delta’ formation, hence the name Deltic. Only the opposed-piston-2 stroke-diesel concept (which it used) had orgiinaly come from Junkers in 1930.

I also seem to remember some Fireflies stuck in Ethopia, in varying degrees of disrepair, I think.

The Canadians had 2 in the early `90’s.
2 ? went to SouthAfrica in the late `90’s
But some others were ment to be still there in `99
Are they still there ?
