Thanks Simon,
Photo with ‘Y’ on still eluding me. Don’t have the Aircraft Enthusiast mentioned but that seems to refer to the aircraft before the code was applied, if it was at all.

Bump
Bumping this up just in case someone else comes across something.
Had a reply from Cosford, saying that the ‘C’ it once wore was spurrous. So if anyone can come up with a pic of this Argosy wearing the ‘Y’ code would be fantastic.
Thanks,
Richard J. Caruana

Roundel
Nothing special about the roundel, except that it has been modified from the original three-colour one to four-colour with the addition of yellow. Orthocromatic film, very popular during those days, turned yellow and red tones into very dark greys. Note how Dark Earth areas (angled patch from aerial to roundel, top right hand corner) is darker than Dark Green which, visually, is considered darker. This is due to the high percentage of yellow in Dark Earth.
Knew I had a pin-sharp print in my archives, took some time to trace it.
You should be able to see the details better.

Just finished a feature for Model Airplane International on RAF Phantoms.
Here’s a sample page of the eight colour art spreads. More here:

Bit of a wild guess, but that pier in the background looks very much like the one there was at Kalafrana, Malta. However I cannot recognise the buildings.
The place was renown for its maintenance workshops and Sunderlands were a frequent sight in those days.

THANKS TO ALL
Many thanks for the response, and especially for the great pics and the lead on the aircraft’s manual.
Since it’s an aircraft often seen at Malta I have quite a good collection of slides and pics of the RAF machines myself (and those of BEA), but anything would be most appreciated.
Will be doing the commercial version as well as the RAF’s versions and schemes alone will not make a book. So, David and AMB, and any others, kindly scan whatever is available and send it over to:

Thanks to all again, and for anything that comes my way in the future.
Congratulations to all involved in this project. A magnificent job!
WHAT A SIGHT!!

Firefly line-up pic seems to me as having been taken at Hal Far, Malta.
Wing in the foreground is from a Macchi C.202.
Not sure if the head-on aircraft is also a Macchi C.202. A closer and larger scan of it would help.
NOTHING!!!!
First real long break for quite some time. Back to the drawing board (virtually) Jan 5.
Pics 65-66
Sorry John (Aeroclub) but that building on the hill in the background is definitely Bighi Hospital, and that makes it Grand Harbour and the creek in the middle is Kalkara. Nice atmospheric pics, pity they’re taken from so far away. Great thread this one, thanks to all contributors.

All the best from sunny Malta…. no harm in trying, is there??
Thank you John.
Sorry I couldn’t be there, not travelling much lately.
