What you are looking at in this photo above the lower portion of the rudder is the tail fairing which is fixed, and fits between the upper and lower rudder parts.
I know that David, that’s why I’ve posted that pic and the diagram.
I’m trying to understand what Circus is saying here in his last para,
Is the upper rudder section connected to the lower half by a torque tube?
The upper section appears to have a fixed trim tab, the lower a moveable tab, so is there a reason the upper half has the ability to be trimmed independantly?
…and wonder if he means that the upper rudder section can be ‘set up’ on the torque tube at the rigging stage to be ‘twisted’ sightly from the bottom section, for trim reasons?
I must admit that the pics that I have seen seem to show perfect alignment between the two rudder sections.
In the pictures I’ve seen of T.7s (inc G-BWMF) the two sections of the rudder operate together with the same amount of deflection, using a straight edge of paper as a guide the leading and trailing edges seem to be perfectly in line to me.
The pic in the 2nd post seems to show both sections linked by a torque tube, as does the attached diagram which comes from the Meteorflights’ ‘Meteor in detail’ webpage here, http://www.meteorflight.com/A55D74/meteor.nsf/pages/meteor_design
You may be right in that the top half can be trimmed or ‘set up’ differently from the bottom half.
Without seeing the pictures you mean, I wonder with the rudder deflected that the movement of the bottom trim tab could cause it to give the impression that the two sections of the trailing edges aren’t lined up?

I was being tongue in cheek Jeepman, but there is very little in the way of major British Coastal Command types in preservation, and even less in relevant markings or configuration, and there isn’t a current British MR type since Nimrod withdrawal.
The Catalina is probably the most realistic option, and I agree it would be interesting from a water operation point of view.
I would love to see a clearer picture of the cartoon on 63. I’m beginning to wonder if the picture at Greenham common in 1979 shows a different art work to the picture in Warpaint. I think you could be right about the timing of the re-naming in 1977 – it makes sense. The Warpaint picture isn’t dated and could be pre 77. Neither is the John Chartres picture of 93 dated. If it does indeed show Ermintrude then it would be pre 77.

In this photo (post #41) of WR963 I’m seeing a pink round face, red detail (part of the scarf?), blue hat, white horns sticking upwards, and a flower in the corner of its mouth.
There are two further pics I have showing ‘963, at Leuchars in ’78, and Greenham ’79, and Ermintrude is clearly displayed on it.
It doesn’t look like Ermintrude on WL793 to me.
Pagen01: Do you have any evidence that the name Basil was ever used? WL754 seems to show Paul in 1974 and 1981.
Don’t have much evidence at all on the whole subject, hence why I started a thread on it calling for fairly precise information, the original published lists contain errors, and I suspect come from a common source.
I’m getting together a lot of pictures now, but many of them are very difficult to assertain the correct characters.
I was hoping for some 8 Sqn input, and Camlobes response is perfect, but only a snapshot of one particular time.
WL741 is often quoted as being ‘Paul’, however I have seen pictures of it on Manston dump c.81 and the character definitely looks like Basil, the two looked similar but Paul is in blue and Basil is in red and yellow.
So with you saying that ‘754 was ‘Paul’ fits quite well.
+2, but what the heck can they use as the preserved airworthy, or even current types, to compare and fly?!:eek:
I did like the brief comparison with the Tonkas in Afghanistan, kept the story very relevant to modern day ops.
There was definitely a Shackleton and E-3D Senty flypast at Farnborough 1990, the E-3 was ZH102, but will have to look at my slides to confirm which Shack, WL757 rings a bell though.

HUD?? Shouldn’t we simply call this a gunsight?
Would it not be a Pilot Attack Sight on that period of aircraft?
It sits between GGS gunsights and HUDS, uses information fed from weapon computing modules, but doesn’t present flight data like the HUD.

Also, the ‘wrong’ gauge in the UC hole is a combined trim indicator for a Lightning, which may improve the financial situation further.

I’ll stay on the lookout for a Mk2 though, to avoid any cutting. Having survived this long it seems a shame to take a hacksaw to it now!
Ian , I seem to remember that those Mk2s aren’t difficult to find or particularly expensive, in fact the U/C indicator cost me more than the direction gyros that I saw advertised, mine had a cracked face but was original to the panel, so I kept it in place.
Or me…
….but, it’s a nice panel and if it means a deal!:eek:
Pic 1, Mk2 is definitely the direction finder that was an original instrument fitted in the T.7 panel that I had, will try and post pic If I can find it!
