The Sea Vixen was worrying too, because there was something that it either hit or fell of just before it rotated. Then there was the firing of some ‘marker’ as she turned out, then the panel on the next pass.
Was the runway incident the direct cause of the other damage I wonder. The emergency crew picked up both debris.
I witnessed the crash, the left wing just folded over the top at about 500 ft obvoiusly causing imediate loss of control, the fuselage plummeted into the ground just out side the airfield away to the west. It was one of those horrible moments when your stomach turns over and your legs go all strange. If the pilot has escaped with ‘injuries’ I am very relieved, because my initial thoughts were …..well falling in an uncontrollable machine form that height into a hard area was not survivable.
It was sort of encouraging to see the air ambulance leave the site and go off to a hospital rather than landing back on the airfield, if you get my drift.
So are BA doing this 5 ship formation, if so where and when ?
Well Damien thats true the Vixen is coming and after the things that Cirrus and I said perhaps we should not go. But on the other hand we need to see for ourselves to confirm just how tacky it looks, you never know we might be pleasantly surprised, unlikely but we’ll see. Actually Cirrus has a bit of a dialema , he will be working for one of the mags over on the live side all day and I’d imagine they will want some nice piccies to publish.
Anyway there are lots of other gems there to attract my attention, Nordatlas, DC2, Ryan rep and the lovely F86 to mention a few.
No Lanc though, a bit dissapointing but I’m sure there ares ound reasons, Fluffy any ideas ?
Phil
I’m off to EuroDisney in the morning for 5 days so I’ll have a look to see if there are any spare poles on any of the rides for her , she should blend in quite well there !!.
Phil
Well said Cirrus, could’nt have put it better myself. You know, folks will think that we have conspired together on this. Anyhow thanks for the long chat this morning over the phone, oh sh*t the moggy has fled the sack. Oops sorry the cat, no offence Moggy .
A couple of points Sparky.
I don’t think that Red Bull would give a monkeys toss whether the aircraft was a Sea Vixen or See-Saw, its a (as Cirrus put it) ‘Flying Billboard’. So I don’t think preservation of a unique flying aircarft was top of their agenda, a cheap(relatively) way of advertising their product of somebodyelses airframe rather than buying their own was. Ok, Ok I know its flying whereas without this sponsorship it may not have done.
I don’t really think you can classify the Vixen as warbird, very Intersting naval jet yes and a great tribute to DH’s long line, warbird no.
Yes I am a purist, and proud of it, however I’m not so bad as not to recognise that there has to be some change. What I am saying is that this could have been done better and still acheived the same effect. I think we will have accept that corporate involvement is inevitable and probably to a greater degree as private owners/ operators find things more difficult finnancially, but lets make sure its done sympathetically.
And I was never very keen on red spitfires or Furys, but at least they were all one coluour.
Excellent thread, even though Myself, Cirrus and Arthur are clearly wrong and this is a marvelous testament to all thats British in avaition .
Anyway Moggy I’m more intersted in stories about ladies bottoms.
Ps Have you heard that Durex are sponsoring Caroline Graces spit this year.
Ah Cirrus welcome aboard, I’m pretty sure I know your true indentity, if so, this forum will be all the better for your contributions. I’m pretty sure knowing you as well as I think I do that we have pretty similar views, in fact that is clear by this thread.
You have to be able to defend your views quite well on here as some members express themselves very well in the counter argument, which is of course great for debate.
Thankfully it never gets bloody !!.
This forum already has agents embedded in Duxford (Ashley) BBMF (Fluffy), a flypast correspondent (David Burke) and various folks involved in different areas of airshow/ aviation, so maybe you could fill the Old Warden slot.
I’m quite pleased that after sending you the Vixen picture you felt compelled to join this forum to air your views.
I looks however that we are in the minority at the moment on this subject.
I personally think it looks absolutely PANTS and is a joke, but, BUT I accept that this sponsorship has enabled it to continue flying.
I acknowlege that this has to happen, but feel that the scheme could have been done more, lets say discretely.
I will not be paying too much attention to the Vixen this year, and certainly will only photograph it once as a record. I will be grateful that it is flying and getting booked and recognised, because its continued popularity might just rescue it from future ‘hot-rod’ aerosol artists and get it dressed as it should be in a full Naval scheme.
So there !!!
Sounds a bit short sighted to me.
Come over here Roger we are much better at airshows, unless of course you want no queueing, lots of toilets, water points, non- obstructive PA systems, informed commentators and all at a fair price.
Ah well we can at least put up some very good aircraft.
Isn’t it something to do with Treasure Island ??
He He,
I have just won a pair of tickets to this show compliments of those nice people at F4.
According to the latest listing the Shack will taxi.
Steve,
No, I know Wyton I used to travel past it to Chatteris(what a wonderful place !!!) on a regular basis (1985 onwards) , mainly when Canberas were stationed there. Spent one day watching a U2 doing circuits, I assume based at Alconbury at the time. Now I think the Airfield I refered to is Molesworth having now looked at a map,and the road is the A45. I can also now see Barkston Heath just north of Grantham.
Is Barkston Heath the airfield somewhere sort of west of Huntingdon of the A41, sorry havn’t looked at a map.
