“The Mirage 2000 is an excellent airplane, and while I agree Dassault’s price is a bit steep, the 2000BR will offer a superb multi-role capability for the FAB, and the F-5BR and AMX will supplement it well. You have to admit, an air force equipped with the Mirage 2000BR, F-5BR, AMX, ALX, and then the ERJ-145 AEW&C (Erieye) is quite a potent force. The Gripen would probably be my second choice due to the commonality of weapons and other such features.”
Phantom II, at least on the paper, the upgrade of the F-5s is behind schedule, the upgrade for the AMXs didn´t start yet, the deliveries of the ALX was not made…..buying brand new M2000s or Gripen, Flanker will be another headache for FAB. To save money my preference goes to a used fighter (i´m being rational as possible).

“But having in mind what you say, I think it could be transition aircraft. Sure it’s not a not a “classic” M50, my mistake, but neither a classic Pantera.”
If i´m not wrong the jet number 514 was the first one to upgrade as Pantera and the photo should be somewhere in the middle of the upgrade. Can anyone confirm that?
Regards
Condor, that´s the pic, but, theres another one with another Pantera in slot position, but, anyway, is very unique. The Chilean have the canards, could be the first one Pantera (the classic M50 does not have canards right?).
I guess Camaro and I own you a couple of beers 😀
Another interesting data that i found…..a 3D drawing with the camo applied on the Panteras. Good source for modellers.
‘Yes, it’s true. Actually they received some old (really old) T-34C Mentors from Venezuela.”
Does not help too much. They already have PC-7s which is by far better than T-34. I really don´t understand….anyway.
Saludos and welcome to the forum.
“c’mon condor, i’m betting a pack of 6 cold beers you can get it… “
I´m in with another pack 😀
Grupo 4 squadron Badge
My friend Camaro, that will be nice, right? 😀
Let´s see if Condor can get that. I have the magazine, a pic taken from above with the grass below both four jets, different camos, really nice shot.
Saludos
I read that the deal was not done. Some AT-26 Xavantes were offered but refused. Also they have tried a couple TA-4J from USN stocks but not enough money. I´m afraid that Bolivia will continue to rely on AT-33s and armed PC-7s. Hope they can get some better equipment.
“like the Mirage 2000 too, but not for the price Dassault is asking for, it’s just too much for something that has a few Rafale components, heck, in some cases I think the Rafale has been offered to be cheaper! Rumors also have it that Dassault is unwilling to give a full transfer of technology as well.”
That´s the reason why Dassault lost breath in the contest and Flanker aswell as Gripen are ahead.
“F-16 MLU will probably not be the only option for a lease.
You might want to check out the deal that the Czech Republic got when they decided to go for swedish Jas-39 Gripen C/D instead of F-16’s from USA or BeNeLux. Instead of twenty years old F-16’s with a lot of flight hours they got brand new Gripens and a offset deal at about 100% or so.”
If FAB can get the same deal, with a good price, thats really nice. Gripen is also a good plane and can fullfil our needs, if you take our scenario which is totally different from USA and Europe.
The pressure for the Mirage 2000 is enormous because of embraer and probably not even in this year the government will decide who will win.

Though mission for you Condor… 🙂
In 1994 at FIDAE, Peru sent two Mirage 2000 and at that time the cover of one of AFM issues at that year was a formation between two FAP M2000 and two Panteras flying low level over Chilean territory. Did you have that picture?

“Remember that purchasing brand new Gripens will result in a huge off-set consisting of export of Brazilian goodies, new investiments in Brazil by Swedish corporations as well as transfer of technology in system’s engineering.
All of this would probably be left aside in case we decide to lease/purchase used fighters.”
I know that and this is very good and also valid for the M2000, Flanker and Viper proposals. As our economy becomes stronger the investments will come with or without the FX.
The FX became more political than technical and this is not too good. We don´t know if these off-sets will happen or not. I´m not comfortable with that (my personal opinion).
Regards,
“a classic beauty it is indeed. lucky our Chilean brothers (ours in Peru is no more)”
yes, but i saw recently on AFM some pics of Peruvian jets and a shot of two M5. I know that they are in storage, but, looks like in very good condition. Hope they can fly again.
“tend to agree with my bro, A-29 “hot-dog”
dutch F-16MLU will make more sense to me, sure they have mirages but remember, Mirage is 60’s engineering, while F-16 its 70’s engineering, i mean ideas and solutions 10 years younger (or less old?). as it is, is an awesome weapon and it has quite a lot of potential for growth.
i saw them myself and they’re inmaculate. (maintenance wise)”
Tks brother. Dutch F-16s are fully upgraded and can carry all the modern weapons available for it. If FAB will use all of them, man this is another history 🙂
“……- it is the most advanced fighter
– best development potential
– cheap to maintain
– it is powered by a engine based in a General Eletric’s model and GE already has a maintanance facility located in Brazil
– it is already compatible with weapons from several different countries which represents a wide range of choice……”
Primer, what do you think about a used one. Your thoughts about the Gripen makes total sense, but, due to problems that FAB is handle like for example the delays in C-295 and P-3 programs, it is not more logical and cost saving goes to a used fighter and my preferences goes to the Dutch F-16s despite you consider them “boring”. 🙂
