Hi Martyn,
Thank you for your kind welcome words and for your information.
As for the ‘German’ grip, i have attached a original green service label.
Also, the picture with the ‘number plate’ from my original post is from this grip.Best regards,
Bas
Bas,
Here is a link to a picture of a German Navy IDS Tornado showing a similar grip to yours. Given the F3 first flew in October 1979, then this would lead to a more reasonable assumption that this grip is indeed from a German example given the date on your label.
Hope that helps?

Hello All,
I am a collector of grips and have just joined this great forum.
Recently i have acquired 2 Tornado grips.
One is supposed to be from an RAF Tornado F3 and the other from a Luftwaffe Tornado IDS.
Enclosed i send some pictures.
Anyone who can provide me more information on these grips based on the markings?
Is there any chance someone knows from which particular aircraft (registration) the F3 grip is and if possible the IDS too? Thanks!
Hi BasD,
Welcome along! The mounted grip is indeed from an F3 Tornado. Without any paperwork, (RAF Stores Form 731 equipment conditioning label for example), it is neigh on impossible to identify its last use, unfortunately – unless you knew who removed it! The other grip looks to be the earlier and original pre -mod F3 grip (your mounted grip replaced this style). The GR1 does not have the thumb switch half way up the grip, the GR4 has two extra buttons to play with and is similar to your mounted example. That said, I do not know what the German aircraft (or Italian) have fitted, as their roles were slightly different to the RAF Tonka’s and may well use that particular grip. Unfortunately, I do not have the earlier F3 grip to compare part numbers to be sure. I spend hours trawling t’internet trying to identify grip/stick to aircraft, which is probably the easiest way to try and identify, unless of course somebody else here can offer a bit more gen. Can you post the part numberdetails on the base of the ‘German’ grip?
regards,
Martyn

Does anyone know where the best place is to get a Scout stick top and how much I should expect to pay.
Hi Bucc Driver
Further to my last post regarding your request, this 301693345307 has appeared on e(vil)-bay but, at a rather over optimistic price if I might say!

What is this from? Anyone know?

It’s more than likely an Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) weapon targeting grip, not aircraft. I think there is another thread with a similar grip somewhere??
The vendor says there are numbers on the side but, does not list any! The resolution on the pictures make it difficult for this blind old fool to read!!

That’s a big lump of Voodoo Peter. Is the racking rigid enough to hold everything together or will it need extra boxing in? The Sea Hawk side consoles just have holes so can be screwed down easily into wood for layout testing.
Joe, what’s the panel off? Might help with sizes!
More holes have been filled in the Sabre panel, and other bits laid out. A more age appropriate stick grip is on the way (thanks Brian!) but the rudder pedal is feeling lonely. Anyone have a spare, they’re not handed (footed?). The throttle is also for an earlier model but looks too good not to include.
Ian,
Joe’s panel is a Lightning Mk 3/6 port main, either EF 3.80.4599 (Mk3) or EF 3.80.4965 (mk6).

Does anyone know where the best place is to get a Scout stick top and how much I should expect to pay.
Hi Bucc Driver,
I brought one off e-vil bay just a few weeks ago for £49 (advertised incorrectly as a Wessex grip) but, I also sold one two or three years ago through the same medium for £160, no standard rates really, it’s being in the right place at the right time if that’s of any help? Fortunately the Scout grips seem to be a lot more commonplace than the Wasp which, differs slightly and are therefore easier to find. The other obvious outlets being aero jumbles etc.

Swifter,
That, to echo both Ian and F.B is indeed a fantastic find! I’m surprised with the amount of time Ian and I ‘graze’ e-bay we both managed to miss it!!!
My thoughts regarding the folding capacity is; that it may have been fitted to an aircraft with an early ejection seat system perhaps? As to what, though has got me thumbing through all my references but, no luck yet!

Amazing! Thanks so much, in terms of value, I guess I will have to see what the market would pay for such an item.
Hi g b,
Do you intend to sell this on a popular electronic auction site then? It is difficult to put a value on something that hasn’t been seen however, as a guide the Mk 2 Dunlop grips can fetch anything from £250-500+. Although, seeing past prices of similar things at auctions various, does not mean you will get the same return, put it on initially for a modest start price to get interest and the bidding going, add a reserve if you wish but, let it find its own value.
I have never seen one of these on offer before, it is indeed different to a standard Mk2 therefore unique and it would certainly make a nice addition to mine or, anyone else’s collection !

I knew I’d seen a photo of one somewhere before but couldn’t remember where. Weren’t all Vampire stick tops that shape?
Hi Mike,
Indeed, certainly all the early ‘original’ de Havilland single seater’s had the Mk 2 Dunlop grip (AH 8400), with a brake lever fitted as per the original Dunlop ‘Spitfire’ spade designs. The Swiss had obviously up-graded to toe operated brakes and designed the grip to suit. However, with the fitting of ejection seats to the Vampires they may well have changed the spade for the ‘less chance of loosing knees’ option of a pistol grip. I think the picture depicts one of the rather flamboyant ‘Target Towing’ day-glo striped Vampires rather than a Fighter version but, I bow to greater knowledge! I can’t remember exactly where the picture came from originally but, I knew it would come in handy one day!

It was also used on the Venom Night Fighters too. The AC10522 was standard RAF NF fitment jet grip, as Mike rightly says, certainly multi-crew identified by the letters on the buttons, Meteor day fighter uses either the AC10800 or AC1400 but even this latter one comes in both single and multi-crew varieties but, virtually identical grips! Hopefully, this picture shows both AC10522 in Meteor guise on the left and Venom on the right! Exactly the same grip but different attachments

Any cockpits on eBay at the minute?
Hi Rich,
There is this on at the moment, 301647556630 not sure if the cowboy comes too and shipping may be a bit extreme!
And then there is this, 201147930468 the Voodoo in the picture has also been up for sale on the very same popular web based auction site but, not sure if it is now.
On the panel front and those with deep pockets but, lovely all the same, perhaps this? 180705931720

Cheers for clearing that one up Gin Ye Deur..
What about this one went for a nice tidy sum.
Yokes not really my area but, I did open the bidding on it with a modest ceiling as it was a 99p start!! It has a very airliner-esque appearance to it but, as to what, no idea :apologetic:
