Very nice Mike….thanx to a bout today, mine is now 99% finished. I did a frame 11 for my Mk5, not in a hurry to do either again!!
The value I gave was realistic. I once owned a large chunk of Swift fuselage (XF113)…the ‘ladder’ behind the seat did corrode, but like the proverbial brick outhouse it was!
A few from Oshkosh 2005…..They even painted the F4s with my initials!!!
Before XV404 was scrapped, I rescued the huge panel on the starboard side of the nose and the red light cover on the portside (painted up as the tiger’s eye). I got a few other cockpit parts too.
Congrats Redhill old chap!
I think you are being a little ‘tight’….with a reasonable cockpit from a Hunter being at least £3k….and a Bucc cockpit around £4k, Lightning 6k…..I think its value is around £10-12k
I have a 504 stick!
Agreed! Well done!
It will be great to see you Ritch and Max.
I have probably bitten off more than I can chew! At CF 2011, I was looking at my Seafire and thought wouldn’t it be nice to put a Spit 1 next to it! Anyhoo, I have been feverishly acquiring stuff and making bits. Frame 8 was hideous and is about 85% complete. Big rivetting session yesterday.
I hope it will make it. I have also acquired a couple of largish Nimrod bits that should make a nice/poignant display.
The light unit is standard….the shade/cone is made to a similar pattern; Hurricanes had one made by Hawkers and Spitfires by VS…look very similar…easy to make….an old vacuum cleaner ally pipe cut off at an angle lol
Not with a brace Graham….I will try and dig out a piccie…
they did remove lots of mods to make K9942 retro to when delivered. This included removing the later u/c selector and the kick covers over the tubes/wiring that goes on port and starbd side of Frame 8, windscreen, ailerons, mast blah etc. Probably explains it.
Additionally, just because it was no longer in combat service would not have necessarily meant combat etc type mods not being added….UK is a small (set of islands) with trigger happy AA gunners and also recognition issues….besides…even OTU and training aircraft have alternate roles.
Graham’s initial picture is interesting and looks like the one in a period early war book…the odd thing is that my original book has an arrow pointing to it saying reflector gunsight!! I am not sure that the mount would have used something as ‘elegant’ as the later reflector gun sight mount. I have seen pix of Hurris and other aircraft with both parts outside the cockpit (i.e. ring and bead). No real reason to have them there anyway as long as they line up (so as to speak)
A jolly good clean!!! She was mighty historic so we thought 564 was worth keeping. The original plan was to to use the other cockpit as a donor and transfer stuff into it to create a ‘spin’ hunter. After a while, other projects meant she was unlikely to go further in museum ownership. I remember my last flight in her….
Stan, that does sound familiar with some aviation groups we have had at the Boscombe museum and also after doors open at CockpitFest. Wish they had showed even a little interest but they normally do a fast pace to the next cockpit.
I once manned a display of crashed aircraft parts at an airshow (from a historic wartime loss). A spotter asked me if that was all that was left of Hampden serial No. P???? and I said yes….so he smiled at his friend and duly took down the number. Never understood it…but he did no harm.
I would think it is a HSI – Horizontal Situation Indicator….not seen ASIs in that location
