Hunter cockpit rescued for £50? Hunter cockpit rescued for £150? Going older, a friend found 6 Hurri canopys, I got two which was nice. Loads of nice finds at Chippenham yard…..a dump (old MU) full of spitty parts (when we first got there there were ammo bay doors and windscreen fairing skins up trees!
A dump that yielded 14 complete spitfire armoured screens (nice mix of internal & external screens & glasses), 12 or so hurri screens, 3 whirly screens, umpteen b17, halifax screens. Various finds in antique shops including a mint leather seat back pad for a spitty for £5, spit tailwheels (10+ at mean prices of £3 each)….more up to date a month ago we found a garage full of WW2 parts including half a B17 ball turret, prop, prp boss, bomb aimers seat, control column and wheel blah blah blah…..even yesterday’s Beltring managed to turn up a nice Spit mainwheel with nice tyre for £30

I cannot believe this old chestnut has reared its ugly head again (and I dont mean you Moggy!!)
As I have said before, restoring an aircraft to airworthy condition, leaves a big pile of original non airworthy parts. My, and a good deal of other projects use these parts in static projects…hence no problem…these airframes can be put into museums, the ‘new’ rebuilds can fly…so everyone is happy? ….probably not, there are always some (on the outer edges of both arguments) who cannot be bothered to compromise or understand hat there is always a good solution to this….but maybe It is just me as an engineer…there is always compromise in engineering! 😉 …..I suppose those who say everything should fly would suggest i just scrap my Hurricane and Spitfire parts? 😡

nice shots thanx…regarding AstraHawk XX341 from Boscombe Down, she is flown solo from the rear cockpit since the front cockpit is the ‘test aircraft’ cockpit from which she can be flown with a computer altering the apparent cockpit stability of the aircraft…..the relevance to the historic forum? Well I flew in the front cockpit to RIAT in 1991, sure confused the marshaller who I completely ignored!!! So it is getting an old girl now! If I had known they had an empty front seat I wouldve dusted down the old speed jeans!!! (Which alas would not fit me anymore!!) 😀 🙂

Rocketeer, if I may be so bold, please make that ragwing Hurri the very first image you rescan… I can’t wait to see a better scan of this very VERY early Hurricane! (Note the kidney exhausts, Watts prop, and no lower tail strake)

Looks like you’ve got a veritable goldmine on your hands. 🙂 Thanks for sharing these!

Wilco Lynn….this was taken by my Grandad at Northolt in 1936, you are correct in it being early! I have a piccy somewhere of a brace lined up for T/Off with the Squadron CO’s pennant on the nose!

Hi Octain – if you READ the post, the point I am making is that Fluffy would be able to tell us whether the aircraft in question was more or less damaged than Black 6…

He does, after all know the 109 better than most (including me) on the forum.

I think you will find that our old friend Hi Octain does not know that Fluffy had a big part in rebuilding Black6 and could compare damage twixt two aforementioned 109s 😉

1. To me it looks as if you are scanning from a photo album and that you are not closing the scanner lid – if you can take the photos out of the book and place them directly on the scanner glass you will avoid the bright splashes!
If you cannot either take them out of the book or at least take the pages out temporarily, try covering the rest of the glass with a thick black cloth.
2. Once the pictures are scanned in (I suggest at 200 or even 300 dpi), use Photoshop or a similar program to reduce the pixel size, as described many times already on this Forum (use Search and try “pixel” to find those threads).
3. I have given up asking for a photo advice sub-forum!!! The requests by myself and others are consistently refused, and you are the latest of many to ask the same old questions – no offence, but at least it would be a more useful addition to the Forum than much of the other stuff that appears.

Sorry Papa Lima, I should have been more prescriptive (it was late at night!!!). Basically, I used my digicamera not the scanner as I do not know how to reduce the resolution….yet!!! I will not post more phots until I can do it properly…..sorry…..when I looked at the posted shots I realised they were worse than useless…sorry again!

Not what I am saying at all, but we have to draw a line somewhere airshows are the 2nd largest source of Entertainment in the UK after football. I wouldnt like to see it loose its spot.

Nope don’t disagree…true 2nd biggest outdoor events, just don’t see how a little amusement will chase the grockles away!! 🙂 Noone on this site advocates openly saying such people are twonks etc….just amusing what they can and do say.

Guys,
I hate to break it to you but the people who make silly comments are bringing in the cash so we can keep our heritage. people in the Industry need public support. We are just a small group here and should welcome public backing. I am sure many moons ago some of us where standing on the banks of the Thames saying:
‘Messerschmitts’
‘No there not they’re Heinkels!’
Just a thought.

So?! Does not mean one cannot take the mickey does it?

Phil, lucky you are!!! The Museum of Flight is outstanding and must be even better now the former Champlain stuff is there. Boeing Flight test works out of King Field (I worked there in 1989/90 on AWACs when we bought them…happy days). I returned on 10th September in a fateful year for all of us in the free world…it was the Society of Flight Test Engineers Symposium….the 11th was a terrible first day….
Later that week we had a banquet on the field in an aircraft hangar, one by one the freighter engines spooled up and everyone was so happy…before that all we’d seen above in the skies were fighters.

Give my love to that great city and try and have a meal up the top of the Space Needle!

Have fun and make sure you bring some pix back!!
