Sorry chaps, but I’m new to this cockpit business. Having just bought an original Canadian Hurricane control top (i.e. spade grip), I was thinking about getting it professionally restored for display. I actually have an eye on getting a Canadian Hurricane panel created at some point, but that is a distant aspiration for now. Can anyone suggest with whom and where I can get it done properly (and possibly get an orginial brake lever aswell?
Cheers
Jon
As ZR says….easy to make, the Blind flying panels are available lasercut in the UK for about £50, you can get decent replica brake levers for £15…restore the grip yourself its easy and fun!! I am doing some dimensions for someone fot the port & stbd panels.
You are not alone in that hope.
Moggy
Do you and AF know something we don’t?
So long Stewart…don’t ever lose that infectious enthusiasm for warbirds old fruit…. 🙂
Fantastic!!! Many thanx….and you managed to get some poppies on the Queens Balcony too!! Brilliant! Best phot I have seen in ages
hanks Rocketeer. ‘The Famous’ George won the Battle of Britain number plate.
Glad its going to a good home!
How did it go?
Feel it would be best to cancel another major event this weekend as a mark of respect. You all know what im talking about.
Rubbish….Your Grandfather and my Grandad (and many like them) fought to keep this country free from wicked tyranny, cruelty and terrible acts…to do what you suggest would be giving into these cowardly scum who do acts of terror in the name of a cause that does not want these events to happen. Can’t you smell the Dunkirk Spirit?….I know I can….I can see it in the faces of Londoners and other British people the length and breadth of this great country.
Like many others on this forum, terrorism has touched my life too many times..be it the IRA blowing up my cousin or the cowards hitting the twin towers….never give in to terrorism…
When Did the airforces especially canada stop using Radium on the instrument faces?
in the UK, it was about the early 50s…..certainly most Hunter period instruments are fine….some stuff lingered on
David, it’s always completely amazed me that aircraft restoration attracts such a terribly low hourly rate when compared to car servicing. We should all abandon our qualifications and retrain as plumbers, it’s far more lucrative.
We have never valued our engineers (either professional degree/chartered) or the chaps who restore/maintain/build etc. This is why we have good thinkers who come up with innovative stuff like the microchip, jet engine, Harrier etc then bog off to the US later.
Where I work, lots have suggested that electrician and plumber stuff would be better paying than what we do….shame and scandalous…. 🙁
Well, I have bought my Z5 this am, went to try it out on a spitty…shouldve read the manual on changing the autofocus to Manual (and set to infinity)….each time got a focus lock and no phot….boo hoo! Will hopefully have read it more and be able to do a better job at Leg-ends saturday!!! Now I need tips from the dimage owners!!!
News! Not History Please. :dev2:
According to my profanisaurus dictionary….Hi-Octain is another word for a muppet who is high on 8 cans of fanta! 😀
Well done Moggy for providing more news of this event….should be great. Though not sure ‘compexity’ applies to a Spitfire!!
Can’t be bothered to read all the posts (too many words!), I am pleased that Solent Sky have this fantastic project back again….fantastic work by Dick Melton. Highly relevant to the Solent area.
At the end of the day whether an aircraft will fly again relies on many things, without the correct combination, it won’t happen. Period. These are enthusiasm, spares support and money.
ISTR that the Walrus project was ‘available’ for sometime. The fact that noone jumped in to acquire the project and fly it…is sadly a representation of its position in the eyes of those with the magic 3 ingredients. I would love to see this fantastic aircraft fly again….but as it won’t, I am delighted it will be in Hants!!
Sad story, though nice relic…..I was looking forward t posting the correct answer but sadly could not (work computer/net does not allow forum posts!!).
The spade grip being a AH2040 was/is Hurri/Swordfish/Battle type…never the type fitted to a Spitty…..A Typhoon would not have had an ally grip….was mag alloy (elektron!) and would have corroded to nothing. As would a Spitty grip…..cos other than the prototype they were all mag alloy.
Nice dig….nice Merlin too.
Finally…this is the puppy you need…gives the compositions of all the family of Elektron alloys produced since 1936!!!
