Fascinating question….I would suggest you chat to the chaps who rebuilt the Merlins that were run at Newark….they found that they had to weld new casting ‘patches’ onto the broken crankcase. They found the alloy was no longer available so made new rods from bits of old crankcase (or so I think they told me) anywhichway ask Peter at: Merlinv12.com

These guys are superbly enthusiastic and qualified and have knowledge of other engines…..hope it goes well regards Tony

Just to let you all know LF363 flew today, just over a year since her minor accident at Duxford, on its air test. She had a few minor probs but hopefully she will be at Waddo at the weekend.

Peter,

Don’t know about that one but Jos and I have started last saturday with the preparations to build our Lanc and Halibag cockpits. Will keep you updated as the projects grow. First step……… 😮 the bottom, will be laid 😮 within a few weeks time.

Rocketeer- take a film camera as a back up ! Film is cheap -opportunities to replicate something are usually horrendously expensive or impossible!

Yep, I will probably do that, I have an Pentax MG Super which I love, only problem is that it is so heavy! (I am a bit of a girl when it comes to carrying too much on hot days!!!!) 🙂

Cheers all for the help….much appreciated…I think my budget will only stretch to a Z3 now (cookers who’d have em!)…even then thru the internet!!

I knew I would get decent advice from you fine chappies….having had my HP eat its card, I am worried as to whether I can trust a digi given a once in a lifetime oportunity?!

IIRC, it was the simulation Hunter (the one with the TFT screen in the cockpit), running Dave Garwood’s excellent Hunter for FS2004.

the sim one peoples choice, The Jaguar was best in show

Yeah, I read about a B-17 that came down in a lake near, I think Alresford near Winchester. I was in Wetherspoons pub in Winchester and they had a ‘guest beer’ in honour of said B-17. This was a few months back around March time I think, but I’ll endeavour to pull up the info and get it to you.

Thanx Rich…..I am hoping that the stuff is from this aircraft as it has a fantastic history as did the crew.

According to ‘Final landings’

’02-Sep-49 VT247 Meteor F4 222 Sqn Near RAF Thorney Island 1 [casualty]

The aircraft was engaged in an aerobatic practice for a Battle of Britain display. The pilot rolled the aircraft inverted over the airfield with its dive brakes extended and at low height and airspeed. The aircraft crashed to the ground from a height of about 100 feet.

The “A” has nothing to do with Avro, but I agree that a P8 compass is more likely to have been installed in an Anson than a Lancaster.

Lancs used the P4 which is of larger diameter, replaced by the P10 in due course.
