My last word on this subject – so if the money was found to do a good job of recovering, conserving and displaying the remains of the P38 – would you still say don’t do it?

In the UK, you may (or may not) have noticed that we are hardly over burdened by P38s in museums – despite their contribution to UK based war effort.

So are the grand ‘luminaries’ of this forum telling people/organisations what tey can or cannot do with their money – like happened on the B_S_Thread (dont want to stir that pot again!).

I guess this thread and the replies by many shows excatly why I cannot be a moderator on a historic aviation forum! – I believe in live and let live, room for all and do not denigrate the efforts of others!

I was trying to download some pix from my camera. She is safely at Old Sarum, along with a nice load of brilliant passenger seats – very late 40s with shiny ash trays! We need the ‘bum’ cushions if anyone has any suitable – long gone. Would make lovely cinema seats.
I will try and find out where other stuff went – I think Hampshire but could check?

Again, I state, the real interest is from trinket hunters.
And going on the state of preservation at a lot of places, you’d be better off replacing a lot of slowly decaying wreckage with a slide show–at least it’d look tidy. That goes for a lot of vehicle restoration too. What’s the point of ‘restoring’ stuff to a static condition using materials which look like they were purchased from B&Q. I saw some bl**dy awful examples of this recently.

I am normally non-confrontational, but I find your attitude ‘sad’ and, forgive me, a tad arrogant. Just because you are not interested in something or a facet of heritage, why should other people not be allowed to?! This is a big hobby with room for EVERYBODY. I don’t care much for spotting/collecting numbers or kit building or camping out at the end of a runway in all weathers – but I can see why others do it.
Similarly, there are those that think that anything not flying should be scrapped – being so shortsighted to not realise that many static projects donate parts to flying aircraft (in my 35 years of preservation I have provided parts to over 100 aircraft that are flying).
It appears to me that you have a pretty low general opinion of grass roots aviation enthusiasts/preservationists! We are not all trinket hunters, nor are we all using B&Q stuff to restore exhibits. Even if we did, who are you to say we should not use our money that way? You don’t have to look at it.

What am I expecting to learn? Absolutely F’ all. But if something that could be saved and made into a local display – where is the harm in that??? That said, some of my old spit rubbish helped make P9374 a bit more accurate – so may be something out of that P38 could teach us something?

Even corroded wreckage can be interesting – if well preserved and displayed – please don’t tar everybody with the same brush!

My Dad was ASR and they had sea griffons. He said that it sounded like a bird shoot when they started the boats at Heligoland or the south coast bases he was stationed.
