    Did you paint this one?

Very nice, what type of gun do you use?

Thanks, like most of my projects its a collaboration – the upper and lower base colours were applied by Meier Motors, I then did the mottling, crosses, numbers, yellow/chequer nose, markings and stencilling. I used a de Vilbiss GTI for the large stuff and a Sata detail gun for the stencilling.

    She’ll fly in Germany.

She will indeed – maybe even come over to the UK too 🙂

Many thanks for the pointer Mark… she looks fantastic in that paint-scheme too! :

Thanks Peter – just that naughty swastika to add (but not while she resides in Germany )

One of the reasons for entering the Spitfire from the port side was because the wing surface was stronger there. There were strict instructions not to walk over the area, on the starboard wing, of the radiator, since the surface could be “dished,” which would impair the radiator’s efficiency, and require a replacement wing to be fitted.

The only reason to mount a Spitfire via the port side is that is where the cockpit door is located! The area outside the walkway line on the Spitfire is less able to bear foot traffic and is ‘not to be walked on’ but the most vulnerable area is the upper surface of the wheel recess as there is very little structure in it.

My experience is different from Tony’s. You certainly mount on the port side – but our procedure is 1. Pull down the stirrup with your hand. This also opens up the rear hand grip flap (outward opening). 2. Climb up (right foot in the stirrup first). 3. Push the hand grip flap back flush (this action retracts the stirrup). Climb in via the forward foot-step recess.

During a clear out before site re-development most of these were sent to the RAF Museum. I remember Bulldog drawings definately going.

The Bulldog (Type 105) has hundreds of entries in the current MAC drawing schedule – so certainly have survived, not sure about other types though.

Considering the level of parking charges levied in many towns across the south of England, I think that £5 per day is not excessive. Surely no-one can expect to get something for nothing all the time.

It costs more than that to park at Hatfield station car park!

North Weald’s main runway had a meandering river painted on it in the early war period.

I feel sure that I’m going to look stupid for asking – but why is this Rapide flying with a UK civilian registration mark when its owned in the USA and being flown in New Zealand?

Because the owner is an Anglophile and chose that scheme! It also displays a US N-registration and the New Zealand authorities deemd this confusing and ordered the covering up of the G. Once it gets home to Va it will be uncovered again.

Interesting item. Seems there are two markets for this material. Users/restorers who just want the info in whatever form is obtainable (CD or photocopy etc) and collectors who prize the original items.

My understanding is that the current regime at BBMF favours this more satin finish and is not into constant polishing…

At the end of the day these aircraft schemes are done for a ‘customer’ and as such they set the framework within which chaps like Roobarb have to work. If they say they want semi-gloss or matt or whatever for their own reasons, that has to be respected as they are footing the (not inconsiderable) bill for the work. I think the ‘Old Lady’ looks wonderful in her new scheme.

The event is in the Midlands, middle of July – there is no particular type requirement as long as access to it is possible (ie; the public will be allowed supervised entry to sit in the cockpit – for educational purposes) – any historical type would be good, but presuming its going to be something jet powered from the 50’s or 60’s. Thanks again.

Wasn’t the all black brought in because it was reckoned to be easier to see?

Yes, a testing programme proved that black had the highest daytime visual conspicuity (they did not bother to prove it also had the lowest at night!).
