Here’s a ’47 Thompson at Sharjah.
Very nice – but where/what is Sharjah?
less if you can figure out how to connect it the A3/A4 printer inside.
If you do use a camera
Most of the drawings look fine on A3 and that size is 40p a pop. Just go in to ‘print set up’ when you are using the MAC film reader and selct the Xerox printer on the other side of the partition and A3 paper size – (they will show you how – very helpful staff).
The Squadron at North Weald used to have one in working condition
Thats the one now in the USA in post 3.
Anyone know if any of these are available? Would be ideal for our needs.
George
They do come on to the market – I just had one shipped out to The Military Aviation Museum in Va, USA a few weeks ago.
I believe its going to be a temporary strip just for the show weekend so you wont see much on Google Earth.
Looks like your gonna need a bigger tent!!
I Know its been done more than once, but is it major/major surgery to get one in a spit?
Graham
In a word – yes!
But what do i know.
Usually more than you let on! 😀
Talking about the architectural aspects of the museum – every time I visit I think about the possibility of tearing down the horrible 1970’s facing/extension and returning the WWI hangars to their original appearance – I think many people are simply unaware of the historic structures that remain shrouded behind what is now a very dated looking facade. Of course many of the functions of the modern building would somehow have to be re-located but this could be done in a much more sympathetic way.
and have you tried to find somewhere within easy walking distance of the museum?
Edgar
Some good points there Edgar – although now there is a very nice bar/pub that does good (although not cheap) food just down the road – five minutes walk.
I agree with you on the archive staff – always very helpful to me on my frequent visits.
Sounds like a plan to me…
OK – your in!
It’s about time that “book” is published. A week after publishing it will be out of date anyway, so better publish it now.
Cees
True – but then I am happily still dipping in to ‘Spitfire Survivors 2’ – and thats 24 years old now!! 😮
I think a good parameter for a current list of flyers would be to pick a point at the end of the last show season and any spits flying then to be included, also any on annuals or majors as these will be returning to the skys this year , hopefully !! maybe this could sort things out ? Or just confuse it more !!
Steve
Good idea Steve – along those lines maybe a website that has a chart/diagram with every Spitfire that has flown in the last ten years (OK thats a bit arbitary but a good round number to start with) and next to it its current status (A/W, Resting, Under Repair, Stored etc). Each one can have a link to pictures and a brief history. A committee of keen forumites (you know who you are John and daz) could maintain it – under the watchful eye of Mark 12 of course, and keep it up to date. This would not rival any Spitfire Survivor sites as it would be limited to the flyers only (you OK with that G-ORDY?).
That was rebuilt by BAe, and doesnt have the same issues.
Bruce
Good point Bruce.
I maintain a database, which a few folk on here have seen, where I list every single Spitfire/Seafire that exists today and a large smattering of others that didn’t quite make it as well.
There are one or two of these I suspect – apart from Mark 12’s and G-ORDY’s (which will be published this year).
The website idea is interesting – but i suspect the secret is to somehow keep it up to date. If it was just the flyable examples this would be manageable – but quite a job for all 200+ known survivors!
Hi Mark V, I think in the case of BBMF MKXIX this is going to be sorted out at ARCO with the work they are doing on her now. As for Rolls Royce i think this is going to take considerably longer because it seems to be more than just a spar issue !!
Steve
Yes Steve – I think your right – of course there is the other BMMF Mk 19 too?
