For the P-51 the manual reccomends 15-20 degrees of flap on take-off for ‘best obstacle clearance’!
Whats the problem with wingtips – did Mr Mitchell get that bit wrong?
Is that the HAC hurri in the background or the BBMF?
HAC
I was just looking at the Database on PR/FR Spitfires, and the survivors listing states that SM969 is owned by Jim Beasely, rather than TFC. Have TFC sold her on or is this a mistake?
Which database, Ant?
Jack, do you have an illustration you can post of the final colour scheme?
The posted pictures show the final scheme! The wings are silver also 🙂
…and not a nose stripe, crooked code letter or hand daubed serial number in sight.
Out… Roxeth
No – both the latter and the former were associated with the later (post August ’41) scheme applied to AR213. The code letter E on the port side appeared to be slightly crooked on the photos (although it has been argued this is partly due to the curvature of the fuselage as the bottom tip of the E is very low on the fuselage) and in any case the owners instructions were to make the leg of the E square.
There was an in-depth article on the 1977 Spitfire recoveries in Aeroplane magazine either that year or 1978. I have the article in the house somewhere.
At least one of them was being restored to fly….
The B-25 ‘Wild Cargo’ has flown!
According to flugzeugforum.de they are going to move to Bremgarten soon and so will the aircraft
They are already there (have been for three weeks or so).
I was there a couple of weeks ago to look at another re-finishing project. Its a truly impressive place but was still being completed by the builders. It is however a private hangar and the aircraft based there are owned by a variety of clients so it may not be a great idea to assume automatic entry. Having said that the hangar doors are generously glazed!
Its a bit quiet on this thread! Well here is an unofficial update – the painting team, headed by Tom, have been hard at it for several weeks now and she is finally starting to look her old (1941) self again! Serial and code letters went on today and the whole effect is looking rather stunning with the majority of the masking removed this evening. The last of the detailed stencils and instructionals will go on over the next few days to complete the job and the engineering team will then re-panel her and re-fit the control surfaces.
Tom W will I am sure post pictures at an appropriate time, probably once he can get her in to the daylight – its worth waiting for!
What part of the country are you in ZRX61?
More a question of ‘which country’ I would say!
He landed just before I departed, then departed just after I landed.
Do you think he might be trying to tell you something 😀
Was fortunately outside the office at work this lunchtime to be suprised by the sight and sound of a griffon Spitfire, complete with D_Day stripes.
It overflew Gaydon at 12.15, marvelous 😀 Feels like the airshow season is just around the corner!
Not a Merlin?;)
The white was so old it had reverted to a powdery like state and just fell off when you tried to clean it up, and the bright red on the roundels had become more like anti-flash pink!
Were they able to paint over the existing paint (after a lot of prepping I imagine) or was it stripped to bare metal?
