What a beautiful thing that Blenheim is.
I would like to second that! Magnificent!
Now there’s a reply – I might even have to save that for future reference!
Just buy a copy of Paul Lucas’s book ‘Camouflage & Markings’ – all that and more.. I am surprised Antoni did not mention the source.
if I was to buy an ex RAF Chipmunk and paint it with the serial number of another Chipmunk that is currently flying would the CAA allow this?
No – all aircraft have to have a unique identifiable (serial) number and that cannot be shared with another currently flying aircraft.
Does the CAA have the power to grant the right to wear those markings or merely the exemption from wearing the registration markings? I assume the CAA have to be happy with your chosen scheme to allow the registration exemption
As I said above – yes to both (in the case of USAAF markings). In my experience there is no ‘vetting’ of the proposed scheme – I simply described it, sent a photo and they approved it after a short conversation.
There are two stages in carrying ‘authentic’ military markings.
Not in the case of USAAF/USAF markings – the CAA has power to grant the right to display such markings without a seperate application to the USAF.
Fair comment, Mark V. I have amended my post accordingly.
Thanks – has anyone challenged Mr Greatrex about this extraordinary tale?
It should be made clear this is simply a comment posted by a Facebook member (Darron Greatrex) on the page – not by David Cundall.
There is a very nice picture of Mr. Moore in one of the ‘Spitfire – Living Legend’ books (by Jeremy Flack).
What killed North Weald?
Used to have an airshow, a few aviation events each year. Now not much happening for the enthusiast.
Nothing has ‘killed’ N Weald – its still very much alive as the various picture threads attest. There are many events held there each year and there is a lot to for the enthusiast to see. Recently new residents have moved in and every weekend sees plenty of movements from the resident organisations that are based there such as the Gnat Pair, Kennet Aviation and Hangar 11. The Air Britain Fly IN was held a few weeks ago and Pup Cub gathering a weekend or two ago and recently there have been night shoots, the Norwegian Day and there is the upcoming open day in September.
The airfield also hosts a varity of other events from a large Saturday market to car enthusiasts days, driver training, hovercrafting, archery. There is always something going on there and diversity is the secret to giving the place more appeal to a wider audiance rather than a purrely aviation focus.
Please do not write off a thriving airfield.
No – that one is still stored with Fighter Factory/MAM in Va, USA.
Thanks for posting these shots 🙂 Its great to see the house in Southampton looking so well kept – and still with its original windows and roof tiles. Externally it looks fairly conventional in terms of 30’s domestic architecture – which makes me wonder what special features were incorporated in to it – particularly from an aviation point of view knowing this was a bespoke design for RJM?
Its a form of anti-corrosion treatment.
Sorry not that much of an anorak but they look painted to me 🙂
Type 1 (chromic) anodized.
Lovely video.
Although the formation looked a little tight, considering (if nothing else) the value of the aircraft
Alan, decisions about formation positioning and individual aircraft distancing are not usually made with regard to aircraft value (a good number of other factors, yes) – your criticism seems a little unfounded in this instance.
11.20 am BBMF Lancaster banking low over my house :eagerness: en-route to Runnymede . Fantastic .
11.20 – n hold at runway threshold at LHR in A-340. ” Sorry ladies and gentleman our take off is delayed due to a flying display” I thought thst was the Lanc I could see in the distance – well worth being held up for!
