No special events are planned for Saturday, it’s just a case of a few of us meeting up & walking around the airfield together.

I shall leave the choice of meeting point up to those who have visited DX recently (I’ve not been for 3 years+) and who will have a better idea of what’s best.

So far Robbo’s seems the best idea to me though, the bench by the Lancaster in the Superhanger (Hanger 1?).

I’m sure it must be the same badge, don’t think they’d have two so similar, defeats the point of trying to make it look like more units are involved. Still would be nice to make out the bow.

I know, it was the full size version that I’ve tried to enlarge. I just thought that Mark might have a better quality copy that would enlarge better.

That’s the one I was thinking of too. I’ve tried enlaging this image to get a better look at the badge on the CASA, but it just blurrs. I don’t suppose Mark 12 could do a better enlargement of the badge on the CASA?

I’ve finally managed to get hold of a photo showing the badge from ‘Battle of Britain’, donated to our museum by Alan Killen, which was found blowing around Duxford during the making of the film.

Judging by the cr*p stuck to the back, it was pulled off one of the ‘Heinkels’ which was at Duxford.

Any thoughts DDM & Mark 12?

Magic, as ever Dan. Can you do a version as per the painting, just for completeness?

I would be interested what other more knowlegable people (Mark 12) have to say re any corrections to your profile.

As far as TB885 is concerned, I believe it will stay in storage, until such time as the museum has the money to restore it. This is the cockpit section, as seen in FlyPast, August 1991.

    Thanks Distiller,

So the KG53 & the II/KG53 emblems are the same, or in other words II/KG53 used the KG53 emblem rather than one of their own.

Following on from this, what’s the best website where you can copy the Luftwaffe unit emblems from? I have a number in my ‘Favourites’ folder, but none are what I would call fully comprehensive.

Thanks for the post, but that’s the I Gruppe KG53 emblem, which I came across on my searches, but I’m after either the KG53 emblem (for the whole Geschwader) or the Stab (Staff) flight of KG53.

In my experience, if you ask for just one copy of one Movement Card (Air Ministry Form 78) they don’t charge. don’t forget to give them your address as they don’t email them.

Being as it’s last unit was 9 FTS I would assume that it was either damaged in a flying or ground accident, declared too badly damaged for repair & SoC OR SoC due to wear & tear. Probably it would have been stripped of spares & scrapped. It doesn’t seem to have been used as a training airframe, with an ‘M’ number. If they could have found a use for it, they would have, so I would tend towards a flying accident, which damaged it too badly for it to be of any use, even on the ground.

Check the link on my previous post – great info.

‘The Hawker Hurricane’ (Mason) lists R4194 as joining 615 sqn at Kenley in August 1940, then to 9 FTS (no date), SoC 22-12-41.

There’s no mention of R4194 in ‘The Battle of Britain, then & now’ so it seems that it escaped significant damage.

Have you emailed Hendon for a copy of the Aircraft Movement Card for this a/c? This will give you units & dates. If the SoC was due to a flying accident, you can also get a copy of the Accident Record Card, which will give you details of the cause & pilot.

With the Movement Card details you can the look at the relevant sqn Operations Record Book at the PRO, Kew.

Try this link, & use one of the free on-line translators, for info re R4194 & it’s pilot & history – http://sqdr341.free.fr/textures/hurricane_lafont.htm
