Last Thursday, was somewhat startled to see a white and blue Skyvan over North Oxford. I’ve forgotten the reg, but it was neither MEOL nor PIGY, so there must be a third one about.

It would have been C-GKOA. Used for para dropping but under a different contract (PIGY & BEOL lost the contract this time around I believe)

Ignoring Shoreham for a moment haven’t airshows been slowly dying out anyway?
We have lost Boscombe Down, Abingdon, Mildenhall, North Weald, Biggin Hill (to some extent), West Malling, Middle Wallop, not to mention Seaside Venues.
I bet we could add quite a few more to the list.
Mostly due to costs I suspect.

The airshow scene has been dying out for many reasons, not least the draw down of our military services, closure of military airfields and civil ones alike. Increase in insurance/liabilities too. Gone are the days of numerous squadrons of one type or another, let alone the loss of the variety of types now flown by our military. Overseas forces are experiencing similar budgetary pressures as ours are.

    Regarding loss of venues:
Wasn’t Boscombe -the ATI – a replacement for the IAT due to change of venue for one year only (Fairford runway resurfacing?),
Abingdon closed as an RAF station and although not of the same size or stature it DOES still have a show every year – mostly due to one man’s desire to keep something there alive,
West Malling was closed and destroyed as an airfield,
North Weald probably has some very valid reason why they don’t have one anymore – I am sure I have seen some reason somewhere but it escapes me at the moment,
Biggin still has a show – albeit in a slightly different form than days of old – I believe there was talk of it being abandoned years ago but somefolks banded together to keep it going and…
Middle Wallop I should think is also due to shrinkage of armed forces and budgetary restraints – isn’t helicopter training now a PFI/contracted out thing these days placing extra financial burdens on the station/squadrons?

I should think too that it is connected with the new display line limits / alignment and the impact on the surrounding area regarding built up areas.

I went to Hendon on Monday for the first time since December 2003 and was disappointed overall, which is not good as I intend to take our youngest and my wife there in the near future and I don’t think, certainly from my wife’s point of view, who does like aeroplanes, that the trip will be much of a success.

I have been going since I was very young, and more often then too – I still have my 1974 edition of the guide book(!), when it was just the original hall and witnessed over the years the building of the BoB, Bomber Command (BCH) and Milestones Halls as well as the movement of the Graham-White building.

The BCH had no coherence to it anymore – I don’t think it is “marketed” as such any more – but it was all disjointed and there were loads of empty spaces. I agree with the comment regarding the Vulcan, it is wedged into the corner and is not well displayed as a result. The hall does not flow from the Milestones building very well either.
The Milestones building seemed much emptier as well than when it first opened too.

The original main hall was okay but again some parts are quite full and others have an empty feel to them. The original entrance lobby was just a dingy space with no appeal and just the cadet glider hanging from the roof. There seemed to be a lot of places on the whole site that seemed to be empty, wasted space. I was not impressed with the Belvedere rotor resting on a pad on the cockpit glazing of the EH101 either. The original dioramas in the upper galleries – more now wasted space – when it first opened were quite good and I am sure that a modern interpretation could be made in order to interest and engage young and old alike.

The BoB hall was always interesting when it first opened but agree it is in need of a revamp of sorts. Whilst there were signs up telling the public about the survey work going on it had a feel of a “car boot” with the bits of the aircraft plonked in all sorts of places, although my friend and I did comment that it was nice to see inside parts of the aircraft that you would not normally see.

Outside the state of the launches were not endearing and were not a good example to be set for the public. If they were under restoration then they needed a caption to state as such. I don’t believe that they should be outside either being of wooden construction although I do appreciate that they were sea going and would be out in all weathers.

The best presented part was the Graham-White building and the WWI display. This was clear and informative, although not sure about hanging the aircraft but it worked.

Overall the place seemed a little run down and unloved with aircraft being dusty too. The actual site of the museum also felt hemmed in by the new building going on that appeared not to take into consideration the museum as a neighbour. Information as to what the other buildings on site would have been used for and put them into context would have been nice.

I like the suggestions on here, of the 110 with the Lancaster, the Dornier 17 with a memorial to the German losses and more themed groupings – remember the Camm “collection” in the middle of the original hall?
The RAF has almost a century of history and it needs to be displayed better certainly here. Cosford, especially the Cold War building, certainly are a better visit.

I was there all weekend (working it)
The show appeared to be a success but the rules took some working at prior to the event, taking some 3 days in total to tick all the boxes etc. according to Neil.
The display lines were further back than last year and I have read comments on other parts of the internet as to how it had an impact but it all seemed to work well.
From the aircraft parking point of view I would say we certainly lost some space on previous years with the crowdline appearing to be further back.
Despite all the cancellations and trials Neil had I think he pulled off another crowd pleasing show, and by crowd pleasing I mean everyone as in families rather than the die hard enthusiasts.
Whichever way you look at it, the show would always be a different one this year and under close scrutiny from various sides, as it was the first under the new regs.
The show is apparently, on chatting to the Air Ambulance guys, the only event that raises funds for them that the helicopter attends.

Could it be a mistake in the printing and therefore all are wrong?

The remains of the two F-15’s were still stored at LKH whilst I was there 2004-2008 but I think they left in 2008.

Love the timing of the pair take off and the helicopter in the middle. 🙂

Is it me or are the F-15 nozzles set differently to each other?

My initial thought was P-38 too on looking.

I think Oxford and possibly L-5 for the other two aircraft
