Thanks Peter, good to know she’s still getting plenty of TLC.Looking forward to any piccies…:)
Hi Ian,
I’d be very, very, very interested to see pics of the Lyneham Comet!A few general shots are always nice, but the really useful ones will be close ups if you can get any, especially somewhere like the undercarriage bays where corrosion tends to be most evident.I’ve not heard anything on the Comet’s condition,so any pics you can take will be very useful in assessing how saveable the aircraft is.
My theory is that having inherited the Cosford Comet1,the RAFM now have less interest in this awkwardly placed Comet2 and so would rather do away with it than organise a recovery and restoration for an aircraft they have another example of,rather than the aircraft actually being beyond redemption or unsafe.
Thanks again Ian,it would be much appreciated!
Thanks Stevie, nice picture!Good to see Whittle getting such a high profile monument. 🙂
I’ve heard that there is another of these replicas underway, although I don’t know where it will be displayed. There was something about this project in Aeroplane a few months ago.
Hi Nielly,
Found some reference photos of Mossie engines, but couldn’t get the pictures to work. You could try the link for yourself and see if you have better luck. There are also other interesting articles and photo-essays in this listing,so make sure you’ve got some time to spare. 🙂 Click ‘Reference Articles’,and the Mozzie pics are about half way down the page, listed in three parts.Happy hunting…
Thanks for that Steve.I’d heard a rumour that this was going to be thier last year, so it’s good to have it confirmed. To mention another rumour, I’ve heard that they may be sponsering a UK-based Hawker Hunter display team next year.
Mmmmmmmmmm Supermarine Swifts! All I need now is a DVD player 🙁 lol
Must just be in the Central region Philo, didn’t get it here in London. Was it any good?Any shots of the Comet gate guard?
Hi folks,
Just to let you know that I’ve recieved conformation that the East Fortune Comet will NOT be scrapped! This information comes from the MoF management directly.Phew!
It’s unclear how the rumour came about, but there seems to have been some misunderstanding between museum management and volounteers, aswell as some outside speculation.
Before we sigh and start wondering if it was all worthwhile,I’d say yes it was! It’s important that we get involved when an important airframe comes under threat, and if it proves to be a rumour,as in this case,it gives the museum a chance to ‘clear thier name’ and make sure that the rumour is quashed once and for all.No matter how things turn out,we also learn something from every experience anyway,so it’s never a wasted effort. There will be other cases like this in the future I’m sure,so this is good practise!
Thanks to everyone who wrote to the Museum and/or gave thier support,it’s greatly appreciated by many. Here’s to more happy outcomes to our emailing campaigns! 🙂
Hi folks,
Just to let you know that the Museum of flight at East fortune will NOT be scrapping thier Comet! There has recently been a change of management at the museum, and the new boss is keen to keep the aircraft. It seems the rumour cropped up through bad communication amongst museum staff and management under the old ‘regime’,and speculation from outside.
Before you sigh about it being a ‘wasted effort’,we have to remember that things like this are worth getting involved in.Atleast now we have the peace of mind that the Comet isn’t going anywhere, and the museum themselves have a had a chance to ‘clear thier name’ so to speak.I should also say that we shouldn’t be hesitant on things like this in the future because of the way this has turned out.Museums DO make crazy and/or regrettable decisions occasionally, and we should always be prepared to make ourselves heard.
A huge thankyou to everyone who emailed the Museum and gave thier support,it’s much appreciated by myself and by many others.
Although it looks realistic, the nose on the Buchon in the piccy is a wooden mock up to make it look like a D-B powered example. The aircraft has never actaully been fitted with a D-B engine. The RAeC are restoring it to airworthiness with a Merlin.
“All through the summer of ’43,we had translators working on the lethal joke. For safety, each translator worked on one word each, although one man saw two words by accident and had to spend several weeks in hospital…” 😀
What’s happenned to the Lodestar which was with Sebena Old Timers?Come to think of it,what’s become of SOT as a whole? Any chance of thier Lizzie flying again?
“How about some of us ‘locals’ (well Worcester is close to Leominster) get together and try to persuade the owner to part company with her? Maybe talking to and getting his son on side might help….?!!”
I can’t say too much at the moment, exept to say that there are wheels in motion already.I have high hopes of the aircraft being moved before the end of the year,so everyone’s offers of assistance might well be taken up on.Fingers crossed…
Bruce, would the DH Museum be seriously able to take on and restore her??
Thanks for putting a word in Ashley, nice one! 🙂 It should be very helpful to have someone aviation minded in a position of influence up there, especially when they know how many folks are keeping an eye on ’em 😉 .
Hmmmmmmmmm, interesting Alastair, and more than a bit worrying. If one part of the Museum doesn’t know what the otehr half is doing there’s sure to be problems afoot. ::rolleyes:
