RE: French Lancaster
Hi Peter, thanks for the pics 🙂 If I remember rightly, this Lanc crashed on an island in the Pacific, but I can’t find any other details. Can anyone fill me in?Was it a crash or was she written off in a heavy landing? One or two of those undercarriage mounting brackets certainly look a touch bent!
Thanks in advance 🙂
RE: F-80 Tribute
Thanks Phantom,interesting pictures!
I’d agree with you that the P/F80 and it’s pilots don’t get the recognition they deserve, particularly the recce guys in Korea. As far as I know, there are no airworthy F80’s in the world today, and I find that pretty surprising considering the importance of the type and the capability of the US/worldwide warbird industry.Do you know of any plans to restore an airworthy example? With all these T33’s about,it might be logical to convert one to F80 status.Would this be possible?
I can’t help noticing the XF95 Goblin and the B36 Peacemaker in the background of the fourth pic.Where was it taken, the USAF Museum?
Thanks again for the pictures 🙂

Hi Roger,
If you find problems with your posts, you can click on the ‘edit’ option along the bottom of the box,and that will allow you to correct/update your messages.
With regards to the Trojan,I aint got a clue I’m afraid.
RE: French Lancaster
Thanks for the post Roger, she’s looking good!I’m just thinking she’d go down a storm at Cockpitfest :).Not sure I agree with you on the pale colour scheme, that deep blue looks rather tasty to me.
RE: Spitfire LF Mk.16 RW382
I know I’m bringing up a very old argument here, but I thought it ought to be done…
I can’t for the life of me see why somebody would want to restore the wreckage of RW382.There are a large number of Spits about these days, and surely there are others in more reasonable condition that could be restored?I don’t see why someone would specifically want to put the RW382 identity back in the air.To my mind the machine was destroyed in 1998 and it’s pilot killed. Why not build this new machine with the identity of another? To my mind, rebuilding RW382 is an erasing of the fact that it crashed, and this I find offensive and rather peculiar.
I would say roughly the same for the case of TE566 in South Africa, although it’s rarity in that country does make it more desirable for some to restore the machine. My dad used to work alongside the former Czech fighter ace Adolf ‘Tommy’ Vybiral, who flew TE566 whilst it was with 312sqn,and I wonder,if he were still with us,what Tommy would have to say about it’s rebuilding after a fatal crash.
RE: Me Jaguar
Hi Rob,
I see no reason why a Do17 shouldn’t be able to roll on it’s back, either as a controlled manouver or otherwsie. The ‘Flying Pencil’ was amazingly robust, and it was extremely fast in a dive, some accounts telling of 17’s running away from persuing Spits and Hurris.
Generally speaking, the majority of larger aircraft are more manouverable than we give them credit for.For instance, there are stories of Lancasters being barrel-rolled!It would even be theoretically possible to loop a number of today’s airliners.
RE: Me Jaguar
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-09-02 AT 05:48 PM (GMT)]Hi Rob,
The Jaguar was indeed called the Bf162,but to the allies it was always referred to as a version of the Me110.Although the type existed,it’s thought that the type never actually flew operationally over the UK,so it’s been suggested that reports of ‘Me110 Jaguars’ being attacked were probably early versions of Do17 with inline engines. These were occasionally used for weather recce and general ‘snooping’,so the one in your book seems more likely to have been a Do17.
Hope this helps

RE: What state is Hendon in lately?
Wash your mouth out with soap and water alexis!! lol The last thing you wanna do with a Lanc (or just about anything else for that matter) is stick it outside on a pole!Lets hope you haven’t given the RAFM any ideas!!

RE: Images of War
Hi Ashley 🙂
That night time Lanc pic I think is an original rather than a modern posed or doctored shot.I’ve seen it in a few publications but none of them give any specific detail as to the particular aircraft, squadron, location etc,so she’s a bit of a mystery. One caption says that the aircraft is being illuminated by the take off clearance signal flashlight from the runway control van,but this seems unlikely as the wheel chocks and access ladder are still in place.
Sorry I can’t give you anymore info than that.

RE: Duxford 2002 Airshow
You’re right Ashley,it’s a shame the Firefly won’t be there, but one other regular that it seems won’t be there is the BBMF Lanc 🙁 Is this a typo or will she really not be attending? It would be nice to see her display at Duxford again after the short show she gave on the Saturaday at Legends.I’ve barely seen her all year! 🙁

RE: Some Javelins for Alastair.
Thanks for the info chaps. Is there any info on what became of the ones donated as technical airframes? Is there any chance that one or two still survive??

Thanks for the info kieth,I look forward to some more Javelin pics 🙂
