Is it just me, or have a large number of aviation documentaries (any other type documentary too) been dumbed down considerably?

Some of them are shockers in terms of quality, and they make me question the others as well, if I know little (for example) about the Romans, how many inaccuracies are in these?

I did, and still do, enjoy “Dogfights” when they show it, other than a massive US bias in subject material, it was very enjoyable. Its all about the time spent in preparation (also money…) I’ve watched all of the “Timewatch” series which featured the WW1 “aces falling” an enjoyed every one. A lot ogf the time, I get 2 mins into “greatest war planes” and I want to throw things at the TV !

Its like Daz says, a mix & match of various aircraft and missions. I’m not that much of a gamer but found this one very “crowded” on screen and no single player game other than the missions. You can (for example) play co-op games or challenge somebody else in a range of exotic types.

On the missions, you (cue laughter) land a Hurricane on a train so your secret agent passenger can get out. Later, over Cairo you take on swarms of bombers, then attack parachuted supplies, then move onto a massive Zeppelin which air launches Me-109’s……:eek:

Mind you, I am, and have been stuck on the same level on “BA-1” for far too long now…..

That could be it – they just seem to churn them out now to sell happy meals and assorted s**t anyway:mad:

Still, have Wall-E to try later and The Iron Giant is due a run out as well, now there is an animated movie (Brad Byrd/Bird again) well worth seeing.

No Country For Old Men…. utterly overated tripe. Slow, dull and 2 hrs of my life I want back.

HellBoy 2 – Visually fantastic, but usual comic book style movie.

Quantum Of Solace – ummm, brave and different Bond film, but not a bond film, at least the product placement is more subtle…..

Monsters V Aliens – where has the humor of Toy Story, Monsters Inc and The Incredibles gone??? – kids loved it but something missing when compared with the earlier dare I say classics of their kind.

One junction down the M3 from Odiham so as well as having Chinook tyre marks on my roof, there is a history up there of P-40’s, Mustangs, Blenheims, Lysanders, Vampires, 1953 RAF Royal Review, Middle Wallop, Blackbush (Hartbridge Flats) Lasham.

The old dispersals and shelters at Lasham are overgrown now and used as an outdoor “team building” location by a company who also run some paintballing there as well.

Further away, Beauli where a camp site now sits on the old airfield, you can still mak eout old taxi ways etc, Thruxton airfield as well as Boscombe Down.

Disocvery wings was Ok, but a few hours a day only with repeat material (as per loads of sky channels !)

I find now that there are more “history/documentary” channels with Sky and the aviation shows are spread across them. Some worth a look (IMO) like “Dogfights” which shows/repeats on History channel and Military channel. Lots of “great aircraft” shows which vary in quality, you know the kind of things, inane talk over interesting footage and the two not quite in sync (“US Navy lead the way” talk while you see a Baracuda) and (this had may waving my arms around) the Japanese copied US navy training techniques in planning Pearl Harbour – no mention of Taranto or the Royal Navy influence on the Japanese navy from rank badges onwards !

I’d suggest you grab a TV guide and scan the channels, you’ll see quite a mix across National Geographic, Discovery, “yesterday” etc etc – I do find them useful with to watch with my son (he is 9) to help him build his interest.
