I could talk Whirlwinds all day long Cees, but even in my short time as a member on here I’ve seen it discussed with enthusiasm but unless one is parked up behind that Stirling in Chinese markings………. replica is probably as much as can be hoped for.
Still, maybe a new thread will bring out some nice pictures (even of whatever remains this guy has or had from P6966?) Just did a quick google and it bought me back here !
33,000 in a Gladiator??? words fail me ……
Thanks for the replies – as per with this forum, you ask, you get answers and learn something new as well.
D.H Chipmunk, low and slow over Basingstoke about 2 hrs ago – red outer wings, RAF roundels.
Is it more of a “hot topic” as the history is quite recent in many ways, with veterens still with us? I knew a guy who is into his Napolionic society in a big way and travels all around Europe on a regular basis. Full battle dress (he prefers the French) muskets etc, curious if the same debate is had with them?
As to “pretending to be something we’re not”, I do find that a bit of a harsh statement that only ever seems to be applied to the reenacting fraternity. Does this also apply to anyone in the television, theatre and film industry?
Had I ever personally received so much as one negative comment from any of these guys, I would have given it up!! In fact, we usually ended up being invited to join them at other reunions and was even presented with membership of the Normandy Veterans Association, of which I was very proud.
Thanks for listening to my ramble.
Regards;
Steve
Sincere apologies if any offence was caused, I was trying to paraphrase and sorry if that sounded in any way harsh or judgemental – not my intent at all. It was good to see the positive comments from the veterens as well – if it is good enough for them…………!
PS The ‘SS’ have got just as much to do with the thread as the Romans.

And what have the Romans ever done for us eh !?;)
Firstly, who put 50p in the electricity meter at Hendon ! See what a difference it makes!
As for the reenactors I’m sitting on the fence. To have a walking talking demo of (for example) how cumbersome a heated flying suit is, or how to work out a course at night with a sextant, slide rule and pad and paper can only be positive and as has been debated before, “Living history” has its place especially among the younger visitors. I have my doubts thought, about somebody wearing medal ribbons etc, and “living the part” – whatever the intentions. Maybe it is because many of the original recipients are still with us, maybe the last word should be with them?
I have seen it go too far, at the War & Peace show for example along the lines of what Kev says. People digging fox holes and living as Panzer Grenadiers for a few days, something about that mentality and interest nags at me a little. Through a mutual friend I met up with some guys with some Jeeps and trucks that they had rebuilt. They had insignia on the Jeeps, fake weapons etc, none wore a uniform. The view was, I love my Jeep, I rebuilt it and love to show it off but I’m not here to pretend to be something I’m not.

It would also be interesting to find out whether or not the F-101B (two-seat interceptor variant) had a centerline hardpoint or not, and if so, could it carry a third external tank as I’ve seen on some A and C model pictures?
QUOTE]
In the “wings of fame” I mentioned earlier, there is a picture if two New York ANG in flight – there is an underbelly fuel tank fitted, the angle in the picture is not perfect but it seems centrally mounted. On the F-101 C colour artwork, it states “although the special weapon was the primary store, the aircraft could theoretically carry conventional stores as well. In practice these were limited to a baggage pod on the centreline or a training shape for the “big boy” with two drop tanks either side”
Melvyn, (and Mods)
This an interesting and serious example of Forum ettiquite and moderating, not withstanding the injury obviously felt on your behalf,
I think Bruce did the right thing deleting his unsubstantiated claims,
I try and treat the forum like a virtual pub,
Hear hear (I use an alias only because I read and post while at work:diablo:!) but hear hear especially on the “like the pub” comment.
I stayed away from the exchange earlier – but who would be a moderator:eek: and IMO (not being on the end of any comments) I think the best was done by Bruce to keep a good thread open, and remove what was clearly inappropriate material.
Slaters menswear
Just got back from one of these – have to add to the post to say it was excellent. Trying to find some trousers, salesguy spends 10 mins checking “out back” to find my size, then goes back to see if there is another pair as I wanted two (gym/diet thing, lost a few inches off the beer belly!)
Excellent place to shop !

2 X Daimler SP250 darts…….. easy to confuse a non car fan like me…. last seen there 10 years ago, physically intact, just parked and left there.

The later 50’s models look “similar” – then again I chose my first company car that I was stuck with for 3 years without a test drive….. thats how little interest I have – will call “My friend” and see what he remembers…..
This is a tough subject, there are those on the side of “just rumors” and they’re those that grab a shovel, flash light ask permission if needed and get her done! If we didnt chase up on these rumors over here, we wouldnt have a world class museum that we have today.
There must be substantial pieces or intact airframes still to be found, the world is too big and aircraft (in comparison) are too small for every nook and cranny to be searched already.
Rumours can start, like this – (and this is true as I saw them!) but its about cars. I was helping a friend (bad start…) pick up an old Land Rover from a farm in Hampshire. In the barn were two old sports cars – don’t know the type but for some reason the name “Reilly” sticks in my mind. Low set cars, long bonnet, two seaters – intact physically, covered in a thick layer of farm dust. At the time, I was told by my friend (bad again..) that they were worth “thousands” as the car was as rare as rocking horse manure. I know nothing about cars, but if there is a “Reilly” and I post this in a car forum……. I bet that a few farmers get some visits “On spec” or I’d get a lot of follow ups.
But like Peter says, if nobody chases up…… we’d have nothing or certainly less.
The Roc was designed to a bad requirement which was unlikely to produce a good aircraft. The Botha may have been good, average or indifferent but as it was so underpowered it was difficult to tell.
The Lerwick, as James said with remarkable restraint, was an out and out dog. No excuses about a bad specification or the wrong engines, just rubbish.
The Roc was built by Boulton Paul IIRC – always found that very odd when they had a “Sea Defiant” which surely was less expensive that two types? Interestingly as well, Roc’s were painted up in Finnish AF markings ready to donate them in the winter war which ended before they got there. Can’t imagine they asked for them!
One air to air kill for the Roc over Dunkirk – then they served as ground defence at Ford etc, target tugs etc…
Does anyone know if the “fighter” Voodoo variants ever carried any conventional stores aside from their internal cannons?
If you can get a hold of the old “Wings Of Fame” Volume one – it has a variant briefing on the F-101 that may be of use to you?
