was it known at the time to be the last launch? just wondered as it was an RAF pilot, can imagine some of the FAA less than happy about that?

Well, seeing as I never snagged the ‘Frog’ Whitley at the time, this had to make do 😀 !!!!!!!!

Nice to see the Whitley is its lesser known “Close Air Support Role”:D

They are a time warp back, yes you can nit pick (see above!) but they are part and parcel of how I got into my interest in all things aircraft related.

A couple of the Commando artists were excellent, and technically almost without fault. Then there were others…

fair mixture in here – “mein gott” “zum tuefel”……… £10 well spent !:D

Aussies were keen on TSR-2 (on one of those secret superpower aircraft shows there is some nice if not a bit primative CGI of a TSR-2 in “jungle” colours and RAAF markings) Mountbatten did push hard for the Bucc as said above. Germany set on the SR-177, lots of sad tales about government types getting in the way, as with the Buccaneer – brochures marked as secret and kept in diplomatic pouches etc

always worth a trip

I still can’t believe the prototype is still there. If you look through the hatch you can see how “manually” assembled the instrument panels etc are – incredible, it has a real “blue peter” look about it.

It looks like an Anson by the door, with a Tempest as well. The “G” markeed aircraft is tough:confused:, retractable tail wheel, could be US “star” marking – P-47 does narrow down at the tail like that?

and while I’ve jumped into these threads I see your point – maybe just talk up the merits of the crews and the types – P40 certainly gets a bad press in many areas.

I’ve read all the Osprey books on the P-40 in that series except for the Commonwealth Tomahawk & Kittyhawk Aces book, but I’m about halfway through that one.

Truly a much more successful airplane than many seem to give it credit for.

IIRC (am at work) each book intro gives a “score” for that area of operations, CBI over 60% of kills etc? I think “respectable” is at least a reasonable term for air to air performance of the type. as the books also state, because many were destroyed on the ground and also they were their in low numbers, the same fate would have occurred to any type.

Interesting thought – history isn’t kind to the P-40 generally, but front line use from what, 1941 in RAF service, (exclude the P-36 Hawks for now) right up until 1945. Lots of P-40 “Aces” if you look at the Osprey books. Good call.

but 5 issues for shipment in 2009.

so, I guess Boxing day isn’t a holiday in Singapore – in truth I’m not sure if believe it – every time I talk to them I’m told something else and nothing happens.

I just called – again

new website up in 10 days – or 3 weeks (?) been left “High and dry” on the old one.

missed their slot at the printers, so 25 may be off the presses as late as Boxing Day (!) but 26 will follow straight on (yeah, right….) very sorry, etc etc.

As for The Prestige, I think it was mentioned a few times in the last thread – bloody brilliant film, in my opinion!

The Prestige is a masterpiece – have seen it 3 times now and still get something new each time. Also saw “momento” – a tad spoiled for me as I knew a lot about it going in, but still a superb piece of film making…..
