    Well range wise M2K sucks. It can be used against nearest country. OTOH MKI can target military areas atleast 2500 kms away with single refueling.

    Technically speaking, i didn’t mean excat SU-27 model to be Mkiesed. Russia had given a proposal of a single seat MKI type of aircraft for MCRA. Now it was supposed to be with all proven components. IMHO this can be even more versetile than Mirages. IAF hasn’t fully explored MKI streangths as MKI is just delivered. IAF wasnts M2K because of its familiarity and problems with MiG-29’s.

    Easy, no one is attacking India, but if your think “Gorshkov will deter your ……..cent MPA fleet to do that….and right now, even my “piddly navy” is ahead of you in the MPA and submarine areas…..

    I will just tell you an anecdote. It happened I had a small bumper damage (in an arabic country) when an arab’s car sewered and hit mine. He being a gentleman (insurance on his car got over the other day and he was on his way to pay it. 😉 ) offered to repair my cars bender. As it was getting repaired, we exchanged pleasentries and he happened to be a top official of his countries navy. So obviously we got talking. He told me his basic training was in Pakistani navy and advanced in Indian and French navy.
    I asked him why not advanced training in PN. Because advanced stuff is with IN. So i asked him about the french training. He said they are good but the instructers are not as eager to give out more than required. IN trainers were willing to give some extra info, hence more sailors are being sent to India. I asked him physical standards. He tells me its same everywhere, in particular to some types IN training, its in human.

    i asked him about professionalism. He said its difficult to describe. He said he wouldn’t like to get into that. ( he was a professional you see.). But he complimented IN by saying “they are very nice people, i hope that satisfies you.” :rolleyes:

    Slowly he drifted to other things. he was talking about getting close to an Indian ship while he was on a PN frigate. He said he was surprised that the Indian Captain (he named him) sent a “greetings” message to the PN captain. That was promptly responded by PN captain. Another thing he said that he wished his countries navy was the size and quality that IN posses. I asked IN vs PN… he started laughing. he said thats the problem with you Indians. He says PN is too small for IN. Its no match. Why do you even want me to give a match up? (well i was in discomfort). So i changed the topic.

    So try not to put your “you must be good, but don’t under estimate us kind of talk”. Get on with your life. I hope this is the best way to put it to you.

    Scaring the …….iewed from India. Same story with Bangladesh. Rather peculiar to spend billions on a carrier just for being a good will ambassador, there are more cost-effective means to do that.

    The piddly navy was for the PAF Fan who claims that Gorshkov is for scaring them.

    Why just take Maldives and Banglades. It can happen aywhere in IOR. And the Navy believes it Gorshy can handle it.

    Why do aircraft carriers need to be used to scare? Power projection = scaring people? That rusty bucket with a squradren of miG-29 coupled with a good fleet can be put to a good effect. It could stop an effective coup in africa or any other nation. Hell lot of peace keeping it can perform. Remember we put our navy to check LTTE and mercenaries in Maldives. remember we are patrolling high seas to keep trade intact. Remembre IN was called on to guard ‘World Economic Forum Meeting’, held at Maputo. Don’t forget the relief work by the warships in Tsunami affected areas. INS Vikrant was used to liberate Bangladesh out or tyranny. It has played a good will ambassodor to Asia. Its not necessary that an aircraft carrier needs to be used to be used in anger.

    Few things i picked up while light browsing through the thread.

    As Nitin says that there are multi layered analysis when it comes to purchases (as a matter of fact anything) . But as Roel says there are vested interest who are swinging deal towards Gorshkov. What members here forget is final descisions are taken by Politika. Politika includes representations from auditing and vested interests.

    While Nitin is right on the evaluation part, Roel is right on vested interests part.

    But particularly for Gorshkov, did India have any choice? It had to go for a carrier. Only Gorshy was avaliable. That too after years of debate it came by.The real fight on Gorshkov was if they fit Russian or Israeli Or other stuff in it.

    Other defence procurements where there are chioces. First there is a multi layered audit. Then vested interests try to swing deals in the chosen ones from Audit.

    This info on P-15A was put up hastly and will require a lot of polishing. Neverthless I put it here. Thanks to Mr. Austin Joseph

    I just received a confirmation from a good source of mine that the Banglore class will be as similar to what “Force ” has said in its article on P-15A , I am putting out the specs of P-15A here , It should be noted that the IN has put a model of P-15A on euronaval and the specs confirm the same mainly VLS ****il System and 16 VLS Brahamos missile.

    For CIWS each DDG will be equipped with 2 Kashtan-M combined gun/missile system, Eack Kashtan-M comprises eight 9M311-1ME SAMs with jettiisonable boosters and two 30mm AO-18KD six barrel gatling gun with a combined rate of fire of 10,000 rounds per minute. Each system will store 28 SAMS and 1,000 rounds of 30mm rounds in an under-deck room directly under the combat module. The 9M311-1ME SAM can engage sea skimming targets between an envelope of 1.5Km and 10Km, while gun can engage targets between 500 metres and 4 km, ,FC is provided by both radar as well as an optronic Tracker/illuminator.
    P-15A offensive armament will comprise 16 VL Bhramos supersonic ASCMs ( arranged in 2 modules with 8 missiles each), Bhramos will be equipped with a digital flight control-cum GPS based navigation system , and will be able to receive targetting targetting cues from Ka-31 AEW helicopter, Russian GRANIT CSRI will supply Bhramos two-channel active/Passive mono-pulse radar seeker.
    For ASW five 533 PTA-533 quintuple torpedo tube launcher will be fitted amidship, The launcher can fire SET-65E torpedo that has active/passive homing capabilityout to 15 Km with a speek of 40knots and armed 205 kg warhead, and type 53-65 passive wake homing torpedo with range of 19 km at 45 knots and carries 305 kg warhead.
    Secondary ASW armament suite comprise two 12 Barreled RBU-6000 rocket launchers mounter in front of bridge, The weapons will be controlled by Purga ASW FC system, the RBU-6000 can fire 212 mm 90R, RGB-60 or RE-91 depth charges rockets to engage subs at depth of 1000 metres and at maximum range of 6 km , the system can carry 192 rockets with 31 kg warhead.
    The principal Artillery sytem on board will be the forward mounted GM A190E mutipurpose 10mm gun built by Russia which can fire rounds out to a range of 22 Km at rate of 80 rounds per minute, The autoloader mechanism below the gun turret carries a total of 80 rounds, The gun is fed from seperate port and starboard magazine and uses three different round , a high explosive shell with impact fuse, an anti-aircraft shell with electronic fuse and and inert practise round, Fire control is provided by 5P-10E Puma suite comprising a passive phased array and target tracking radar along with optronic trackers/illuminators, The system fitted above the bridge deck-features in flight course correction updates via data links, has maximum detection range of 60Km and operates autonomously and is capable of automatically locking on to 8 targets and tracking them.
    Each P-15A DDG will carry 2 helicopters inside a hanger , The flight deck measuring 500 square metres will be equipped with L & T built “Harpoon” haul-down system and 2 Samahe traversing tracks, each leading to a hanger compartment, Depending on ops requirement either 2 Seaking Mk42B ASW helicopters ( equipped with Low-frequency active sonars now being sought) or one Mk42B and one Ka-31.
    IMP : As per the lastest information avilable from Euronal of the proposed Shtil vertical launcher/missile for the P15A . The missile is a 9M317 which features different fins from the 9M38M1 model on the Delhi/talwar . the VLS launchers come in blocks of 12 cells there will be 4 launcher complexes for a total of 48 missiles.( The 9M317 missile has a range of 2,500 meters to 50,000 meters and engagement altitudes of 15 meters to 25,000 meters. The maximum speed is 1,200 m/s and it can turn at 30g).

    There was a picture of the P15A model displayed at African defexpo in south africa. This picture shows 16 brahmos in VL config and what looks like VL cells for SAMS behind the brahmos launchers. Also looks like VL cells for SAMS atop the helo hangar.

    The land version of the 290km range Brahmos is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads. It is mounted on a 12×12 drive carrier and is on display at the DRDO pavilion at the ongoing Defence Expo 2004 in Delhi.

    DRDO officials said that a number of tests of the land version of the solid fuel missile had been carried out at the Interim Test Range at Balasore last November.

    The scientists at the RDE engineering facility at Pune have now developed an indigenous heavy-duty Tatra-based carrier on which the missiles have been mounted, giving them all-terrain mobility.

    The land-based Brahmos has a launch readiness time of five minutes. Officials said a group of launchers could form a battery under a command post.

    The Brahmos missiles, DRDO officials said, were capable of being operational in nuclear, chemical and biological environment with the carriers being fitted with remote launch control systems.
