Bah. Buy PAAMS, not AEGIS. Then you don’t have to worry about US interference in your defence & foreign policy. Integrate it with Barak, or buy Aster. And A320 MMA instead of P-8, for the same reason.
I love PAAMS, actually i like the T45 destroyers for upcoming multipurpose frigate of 6k i strongly believe We should get the design. 😀
anyways see, We have our own AEGIS equivalent programme and it is going slowly but it is moving ahead,
right now what is needed is Barak 2, And I dont think we will be interested in Aster 30 at all, Barak 2 anyday as it gives India and Israel IPR and it apparently wont be sold to any third party. Plus its a JV means Indias involvement, who knows probably You’ll see the algorithm of the seeker to differentiate stuffs is designed here :diablo:
Barak 2’s range is what is keeping me very much in doubt.
Let barak 2 come first, lets see its range first…then AEGIs/PAAMS or something other can be decided!
Many thing remains unknown, IN is involved in HUGE number of projects with DRDO and boy most of them has been success so far.
IN just has completed a fleetwide datalink system..will use SATS ofcourse. the IRNSS grid is coming as well.
As it was quoted by DM in the Lok Sabha i think IN seriously consedering three systems are on offer and will get one of these onboard P-15A. I also not happy with 60-70KM Barak-2, when it will be inducted into the Navy in 2012 the western navies will have something with more than 200km range.
We should go for atleast 150km Barak-2/8 with a KKV technologies can be derived from naval version of Green Pine and the missile should be a development of Arrow-2/PAD with booster stage must be there for longer range as well as altitude.
Dude if you go by media DM of lok sabha quotes many things including, there is no nuke sub project and no sagarika.
Let me tell you one thing we dont even know for sure the range of barak-2 as of now.
The report states,
The IAF currently operates two squadrons (40 aircraft) of Su-30s that were inducted in 2004. Delays in its licensed manufacture here have prompted the IAF to place an order for another 40 aircraft.
 Somehow we are blessed in journalism aint we?
PS : didnt we had like 10 su30 airframe under construction pic from HAL?
So much debate, so many points of views, and i guess we are still no way near, and it remains anyone’s guess.
Someone recently posted an article in IAF discussion thread which quotes former IAF chief S.P.Tyagi ((in reference to India’s fleet of warplanes manufactured in France, Britain and Russia) that “It is the biggest nightmare to run an Air Force with planes of different origins,” and that Indian Government has now decided in principle not to go for multiple origin planes.
If so, then at least in theory this rules out F-16/F-18/Gripen.
Typhoon is prohibitively expensive (or so i think) with Rafale coming quite close.
This leaves Mig-35…but would then India be willing to de dependent on a single source for most of its advanced fighters that are to serve for many many years to come???Some real hard choices to make, and i dont envy those who have to make them.
Mate, Dont take what IAF chief says at face value and definitely do take everything with a pinch of salt if someone retd. says anything about procurements or armaments, there are manything which comes into factor here which if you put might complete the picture unknown to us perhaps@
This was for AEGIS…..
They said They if we want can integrate AEGIS with present Brahmos and 2 other probably Barak 2 and Barak 1 systems.
Anyways go to lockheeds website, this is nothing new, AEGIS , P3C’s , LCS all are on offer.
I’d be really disappointed if I see barak 2’s range to be anything less than 200 kms.
or atleast the one with 100~140 kms and another version with another booster planned for 200 kms..
^^ ROTFL!
Pwned 😀
Adding 2 cents with my very limited knowledge..
Anyone who thinks a certain aerodynamic design doesnt has drawbacks is heavily mistaken.
Each aerodynamic design comes with sacrificing one thing for another.
However a mixture of best performance versus design is chosen which is very much impossible to determine without wind tunnel data.
Also one thing is to be noted that Aircraft manoevearality though is often discussed with measurement of STR or ITR on a given flight conditions or in terms of specific excess power, Turn performance do matters quite a bit on many more factors one such is energy requirement while turning a aircraft.
The energy cost of turning a given aircraft through a given angle under a specific flight conditions is the energy required to overcome its air resistance per unit mass per unit turn, also known as sometimes by specific energy of turn.
Here is a good paper that discusses “Energy turn rate characterstic of an aircraft and turn performance”
Ankush I dont think hypothetical scenario determines the status of a bird which didnt had BVR. but if your posting context was to show “nor does 71:0 ratio determines the quality of the bird without counting the opposition and machinery it was going up against” , its justified
and kaduna mate its nothing against PAF but to show the context of comparison of one not being right how can another be? I guess?
F16 has HUGE Variants, thus judging the metre of a plane based on one variant is not right, nor is judging the quality of a plane based on a kill ratio.
It is kinda like AMRAAM (older versions) is better than R77 because it has great combat record, bar the pilots it went against.
Lastly, PAF’s F16’s didnt had Full BVR let alone developing tactics for them, Our mig 29’s did, so lets not judle F16 Block 52 (which they will be getting) also the Block 60 based on that. They are highly capable with all the soft kill goodies!
I too would love to see an IAF specific MCA but be practical- does the GoI have the funds to procure the MRCA, 5th generation fighter as well as the Tejas and the MCA ? I’d be happy if some headway was made on the MCA, but considering just how bad the GoI can make the situation for the IAF, I’m willing to settle for lesser than ideal.
Its not a matter of money mate, 10 billion for MRCA over a period of 15 years started form 2000 is hardly anything for Indian ecdonomy not to afford.
Fifth gen bogs down to what GoI will do which they havent yet decided MCa or PAKFA, or both. LCA has already been funded, no issue there ADA has asked for around 1 to 2 bn dollar for entire MCA programme, cant we afford that much over a period of 10 years? that promises a bird with INTERNAL WEAPONS BAY!
50% of technologies from LCA can be used in MCA INCLUDING THE ENGINE!
If we dont go for MCA it would be a national blunder of technology, we did that osame mistake of not going for any other fighter after repetead try by scisntists to get funds after Hf-24 Marut, can we afford to do the same mistake again?
I’ll be so mad if we dont go for MCA…..
IIRC seems like VERY VERY old video! atleast 3-4 years old?
I dont know why ADA isnt releasing LSP-1 videos, Our Establishment lacks proper marketting anf advertisement skills.
230 odd Su-30MKI
xxx- Tejas
126 MRCA (this is where the diversification of suppliers is needed)
200 odd PAK-FA
I would be VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED if we go the way you have puted.
I’m for Rafale for MRCA, but PAKFA by 2025? that too 200 no !
I would be extremely disappointed if MOD doesnt funds MCA…
Lets hope for best!
Why wouldnt EF provide TOT if we become their 5th Developement partner and say fund the AESA maybe 😉
Better still if not partner integrate Israeli stuffs! ELta 2052!!
I find it hard to believe you’ve actually paid any attention to the requirement, or its history, at all, from what you say. It’s for a single-seat aircraft intermediate between the Su-30MKI (high performance but very expensive to operate) & the Tejas (small, limited range & payload). Therefore, the Su-30MKI couldn’t win, if entered. The Gripen also doesn’t really fit, being too close to Tejas, & F-18E is rather too big.
Whether the requirement is sensible or not is another issue. Personally, I think the politicians have screwed it, & India should have bought M2000, with an upgrade path mapped out, about 5 or 6 years ago (that’s what the air force wanted, & they wrote their original requirement around it, until the pols forced them to change it), & now be looking at the next generation. But too late for that.
Agree with you totally, politicians screwed it, We lack visionary leaderships in the parliament 😡 , but the second tier peoples, scientists, are cisionaries like no one but they aint leaders to strike the last pen 😡
Mirage 2000 with stuffs incorporating from Rafale would have been best!
Now My personal choices single engined ones are,
1> Gripen E/F
2> F16 Block 70 with Honeywell F125 engine (A JV with HAL), Elta 2052 radar and strucure derivative from F35/F22 as they has promised, but the god dsamn thing will take more time to make than induct….
IAF’s growth path..
Su 30 MKI – Hi role with some for maritime strike role with Air launched brahmos.
Mig 23/27 to stay till last MRCA delivered and slowly replaced.
Mig 21 – LCA.
Mirage 2000/Mig 29 – Replaced by MCA in long run.
Jaguar Darin II is here to stay, IAF loves that bird!
I dont think IAF is too interested in PAKFA somehow..I say dump PAKFa and sanction MCA ASAP! Government just needs to supprot the industry with “proper funding”.
IAF done needs trans-atlantic supercruising birds, rather short, decisive payload, agile, small state of the art electronics and self jamming capability with datalinks like bird…
F16 Block 70 really fits and so does Gripen E/F.
But with F16 it bogs down to “how much” customization and Indian stuffs will they allow us to nitegrate.
Specially Radios/Datalinks and a lot of electronics….and slowly make many parts inhouse ans supply the country also there is 30% offset requirements!
One problem India may consider, if they buy US is there a possible conflict of interest between them and Pakistan?
What would happen if a war erupted between the two, would the US supply both with spares and weapons? Probably not.
Mate the way I see things it seems almost unpredictable what is going to happen.
Let us analyze things a bit,
MRCA was to replace Mig 23 and 27!
India was initially looking for Mirage 2000, French has told ready to transfer the production line and will modify it with many internal things from Rafale.
Now that deal went off.
The requirement was a good strike platform with less maintenance and better uptime and single engined fighter, later when US chipped in the bidding the process changed and maximum MTOW was increased.
Now Gripen was one of the strongest contenders but its die-hard similarities with LCA wont make it happen.
Mig 35 is a great bird but would need Indian money to make it what India wants, on the plus side, We get best TOT arrangements.
In the meantime mig29 upgrade deal signed and mirage upgrade deal signed.
honestly speaking the most capable aircraft seems F18 Block 2 but problem is what is fit for USN might not be fit for us, more importantly they wont customize the damn thing for us!
Like we have our ownd atalink programme called link 2 programme, i have very much doubt if US will allow us to integrate our datalinks with its FCS.
Now problem is India wont move a bit with TOTAL TOT (once bitten twice shy).
Recently after GRTE , Parliamentary comitee has criticised the delay of kaveri and asked HAL to tie up with global manufacturers for parallel engine developements.
HAL is presently thinking of tieing up of a JV with
honeywell for F125 engine
rolls royece for adour
P&W..
French also has offered to integrate Kaveri in Rafale if we want as slow upgradation of Kaveri willt take it to french engine standards.
My choices as follows,
If mig 35 then integrate the ELM 2052, and go for any European bird to get access to meteor and integrate it in Mig 35 as well.
So whatever you buy sometimes it feels India cannot invest so much on one costly bird thus split deal?
I’m really fed up of what will happen!
Sometimes Gripen N seems favourable as well..
One clear growth path that i can see is make kaveri online put it in LCA, and start working for MCA, when Kaveri will reach 20000 lb mark (the target around 80~90% has been achieved so far), MCa’s engine is ready even before its steel cut.
It will be much easier to predict the growth of Indian aeronautics industry once this this deal is done, else is hard to predict what will happen.
This is the TOT requirements,

17. Transfer of Technology (TOT)(If applicable). The Govt of India, Ministry of Defence is desirous of license production of (generic name of equipment) under TOT. Aspects of TOT which are to be fulfilled by the vendor are given at Appendix ‘L’. Govt reserves the right to negotiate TOT terms subsequently but the availability of TOT would be a pre-condition for any further procurements. If negotiations for TOT are not held as a part of the negotiations for equipment, then subsequent and separate TOT negotiations would continue from the stage where the equipment has been selected.
Note:-
(The RFP in such cases would spell out the requirements of TOT depending upon the depth of the technology which is required, and whose range could cover technology for repair and overhaul; production from CKD/SKD kits and production from raw material and components level. Aspects which are to be included in the RFP in case production from CKD/SKD/IM kits are given at Appendix ‘L’ to Schedule I. Care should be taken to spell out the selection criteria clearly. The nominated Production Agency (PA) for the receipt of technology will be closely associated in the preparation of RFP).

I’m fedup of this MRCA and I await the day MCA gets MODs sanction and funding.. by then kaveri should be ready as well (2010), LCA in IOC-FOC status.
Sheesh another MRCA thread
I’m outta here 😮
EF Typhoon/Rafale anyone I’m happy, with Mig 35 to augement numbers! and put saved money for MCA, as once kaveri is ready (it reaches 20000lb mark, engine for MCA is ready even before its steel cut)>
I’m more happy as being EF’s 5th partner in this! if it happens 🙂
