Camlobe.
Gibson and his bomber leader Hayes? had come to Manston to watch an ‘upkeep’ test at Reculver. As they took off to return home the engine cut out and they landed in a field. I believe it was a Magister luckily, not a Lanc….!
mmitch.
I thought this was well known, I’m sure I read it in James Hollands book .
I actually think the current Red 10 does a good job pitching his commentary about right.
Compare his commentary with many of the Armed Forces demo team commentators whose delivery is often monotonous and clearly just been read out almost mindlessly…..and don’t get me started on the parachute team commentators!
I’m glad you enjoyed the display though, I really wanted to go Sunday to catch the 50th year team for the last time this season, for me anyway.
Hi Paul F
I think you could be right there .
I was damned lucky to catch the Lancs at Headcorn on the sat as they cancelled the Sunday appearance and the Kenley one which is just half hour away from me.
A last minute decision I’m glad I made.
Great photos of BoB day and glad all ended well with ‘Frankie’
I’m trying to work out whether the weekends fiasco was to do with over hyping or just a case of two crowd pleasers (2Lancs and The Red Arrows)being on the one traditional busier day.
I don’t remember the same sell out situation when the Vulcan was booked for its Duxford debut (the year escapes me)
I saw the 2 Lancs at the Combined Ops at Headcorn and there wasn’t any overcrowding despite the event being well publicised well in advance.
As for the weekend, I opted with a heavy heart for Saturday but was more than rewarded by getting to meet Wing Commander Tom Neil !
Not an easy task in hangars where aircraft are being worked on.
Although my wife and I made this comment when looking around the American hangar on Friday.
A number of the aircraft looked decidedly dusty.
I should say that this was an observation, and not a criticism.
It must be one helluva job keeping these aircraft clean, especially those hanging on wires.
Not a job I would like to undertake.
I’m sure Col. Rich Graham said during his SR71 talk on Sat that they are hoping to address the dust problem in the AAM when the aircraft are all pulled out for the revamp.
I think they are going to treat the concrete slabs which form the roof so concrete dust is less likely to fall down from the ceiling.
That’s a very rude thing to call a warbird pilot 😉

Whoops……damned predictive text:stupid:
I followed a flight on Flightradar 24 and one of the BBMF pilots confirmed that it wasn’t quite the actual route but near enough.
Still a useful tool though.
The Boultbee Academy have spent years working with the CAA to achieve this milestone in aviation history, I think it would be wise to accept that they AND the CAA know what they are doing and that all the relevant safety issues and precautions have been addressed. You can take that to the bank.
I spoke with someone this week who recently flew the Chipmunk,Harvard and Spitfire with Boultbee and he confirmed they are an extremely professional organisation.
Other would be set ups will have a harder time satisfying the CAA I suspect.
The Reds looked spectacular at Sunset tonight, spotted them gliding Biggin Hill way with smoke on, great sight!
Your not wrong! Spotted them smoke on just before you over West Wickham way, prob my last sighting for the season now.
The e-mail I received gave all sorts of advice which any real enthusiast already does any way. Arrive as early as possible, car share if possible to ease congestion, follow the signs, obey the directions of the marshallers (sorry parking staff). Getting a bit aviation minded there I think.
With statements like ‘A few tickets remain for Sunday’ I have decided to switch to the Saturday , too much of a risk to focus my plans on Sunday only to be turned away after frittering away an hours fuel.
Having seen the two Lancs at Headcorn the draw for me on the Sunday was to catch the Red Arrows for the last time this season plus they always look extra good at Duxford.
Superb pics as always Brian:eagerness:
I’m glad the Hellcat was ok in the end, I too was watching on Planes TV and was a tad concerned.
The Reds are using Biggin a lot these days after that old dragon put the kibosh on flying operations from Manston.
I finished reading Peter Vachers book on Hurricane R4118 only this week.
For those who don’t know, Bob Foster flew R4118 on occasion during the Battle of Britain.
R.I.P. Bob
Browsing his flying CV the thing that leapt out at me the most amongst all of his accomplishments is his interest in gliding.
Like Captain Sullenberg, the skills acquired whilst gliding have clearly served Chris well here.
Well done ‘Goaty’
Is this TD314’s first outing from Biggin Hill?
It flew down to Headcorn for the press day for the launch of the Aero Legends warbird experience rides last month.
