As a long time attendee of IAT’s and RIAT’s I really enjoyed it.
My only gripe this year is everything having to make way for Farnborough.
With Legends I always like to have a fall back for weather and most often go on the Saturday.
For family reasons I attend the RIAT on the Saturday always .
We had a very enjoyable day at Fairford on Saturday and an equally enjoyable day at Duxford Sunday but the change of date meant I missed the P26 and the P40C which were only able to fly on the Saturday.
I don’t get the continued fascination with Farnborough, every time we go we end up parked miles away in the woodland way past the AAIB .
Then there is the small matter of the different display regs at the show.
Plus anybody moaning about RIAT’s security checks should stay well away from Farnborough or make sure that once you enter the airfield do not go back to your car unless you want the same thorough check every time you go back in.

Due to my Sat only ticket for RIAT it was Sunday only for me this year and after checking the forecasts I set my expectations bar very low and ended up being pleasantly surprised.
I haven’t enjoyed a Spitfire tailchase as much as I did yesterday since the first time I witnessed one at my first FL in 98.
As others have said ,I thought the mass of cancellations would kill the show, glad i was proved wrong.
Yesterday will live in my memory as the best ever Bearcat routine I have ever witnessed.
Keith Skilling provided me with easily the best Hurricane routine I have ever seen at an airshow.
Nick Grey was fantastic in the ‘Joker’ slot in the Hellcat, some lovely low level manoeuvring .
Lots of other highlights and flying that kept me riveted all afternoon.

I have never been troubled by the commentary over the years and i enjoyed yesterday’s duo.
One other observation,I was really pleased to see an article in the programme by Peter Grieve who is involved with the ground running piston engines during the flightline walk.
My personal Legends experience wouldn’t be complete without the rib cage vibrating smoky experience that is the engine run demo.
    Long may it continue!
All in all a super day, glad those showers ceased after the early display downpour.

I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who made the event possible over the weekend and to rejoice in a safe airshow weekend all round.

A preview of Legends 2014 and a rundown of each participating aircraft can also be found via the link below, for those interested. 😉

The Farnborough airshow poster hasn’t helped by showing a GR3.

I’m looking forward to this, the only downside for me is that I’m restricted to the Sunday only so no weather flexibility.
I’m committed to RIAT on the saturday.
Farnborough……..grrrrrr! Can’t they change it from every other year to maybe once a decade?!:dev2:

    Thanks everyone for the response.
    Your help is much appreciated.
    Doug

Glad to be able to help Doug, I’m a huge fan of the A-10.
Sadly, the USAF need to pay for the F-35 so the Hog could be appearing more and more in this forum despite being capable until 2028!

Being flown at La Ferte Alais by a former (now retired) airshow pilot.

You have just reminded me of a sweltering July day at Dux and the strains of ‘shine on you crazy diamond’ by Pink Floyd wafting over the audience in harmony with a beautifully flown Bearcat!

Just wondering if sometimes a partially running engine could cause unpredictability just at the wrong time.

I can’t speak for warbirds , but you are advised to shut down a faltering engine once you are set up for a forced landing in case they burst into life at an inopportune moment.
However, it would have been quite obvious to JR that his engine was in its death throes and past being able to burst into life.

The Hog has always had a problem with gun gases emitted by the GAU-8, during testing a pilot was forced to dismount after the engines stalled due to gun gas ingestion.
Nowadays a different propellant is used which reduces the effects of the gun gas.
However, in the early 80’s a contract was offered to anyone who could alleviate the problem.
The Battelle Company came up with a gun gas diverter , hence the different appearance in the photo.
It worked well but was discarded after stresses on parts of the aircraft including the gun mounts and longerons.

Seems to suggest fly WITH a Spitfire or Hurricane rather than in (especially not in a Hurricane!) so no change there from what has been for years? Also a schoolboy error with a picture of a Hurricane behind the Spitfire text.

After looking at the website I’m not as excited about this at the moment as I should be.
I can only assume the 2 BBMF guys are joining the operation after leaving the RAF in the future.
IIRC, Dunc Mason has another season after this in charge.
Posters on this forum are largely knowledgeable about the historic aviation scene, are we expected to believe that 2 current key BBMF personnel (the OC and the Ops officer) are already with this fledgling operation?
The day to day running of the BBMF is a time consuming occupation, with busy weekends .
Not a lot of time to fit in hops with ‘Aero Legends’ I would have thought.

By the way,I run a local pub football team, the coaching staff includes Jose Mourinho and Frank Lampard:eagerness:

Trumper after many years of problems with the locals the airfield now has their backing they have now realised that the airfield is an asset & brings money in to the local economy. The Lashenden Air Warfare Museum is erecting a new display hall to house more of its stored exhibits & the Fi103 R-4 Reichenberg & we now have Aero Legends operating from Lashenden (Headcorn). Things can only get better with several warbirds bieng based there!

    That is good news.
When I first became acquainted with EGKH back in the 90’s I was stunned at the anti airfield movement and website run by one malevolent individual , I remember him gloating about light aircraft prangs (some fatal)
A few people asked him via his website whether he’d prefer an industrial or housing estate , to which he replied either would do. This was during the dark days of New Labour and Fatty Prescotts mad obsession with building on anything, particularly if it meant annoying nearby Tories.

No a very successful businessman with a great taste in warbirds!

Thank you for the sensible answer.

Firstly his degree and his rowing blue do not mean he is the right man for the programme he presented nor should his his family connections.
There are good knowledgable specialist presenters and the BBC use them.
A good documentary needs to be lnowkedgably written and well presented. And there are many examples without a well known TV face.

    Very well said!

Some news from yesterday’s press event here, for those interested – http://www.globalaviationresource.com/v2/2014/06/23/aviation-event-aero-legends-press-launch-at-headcorn/

Great write up EM, I was at Headcorn today flying and even in the short time I was there a customer came in and made a serious enquiry about a Spitfire flight.
Serious question, is Keith Perkins a lottery winner?

Saw it nestled safely in the blister hangar today at Lashenden .
