After all those weeks, it’s still amazing that the pilots survived this accident. Strange photo indeed.
It’s true, the circumstances of Robs escape still amaze me weeks later.
Surprised to see a s***e paper like The Guardian running such a good article, thought they’d be too busy blaming the Tories for the riots:dev2:
Worth a watch……if I can tolerate ‘Jo Brand’s dad’ as presenter:rolleyes:
Anyway, it was a skilled piece of flying by Pete John at Legends in 08, could have been much worse.
Glad to see ‘Miss Helen’ back again.
By the way Ernie, thanks for posting that video, that looked a superb display by ‘Miss Helen’, made great use of the terrain very much in the style of Ray Hanna.
Great helo display as well, that guy should get more bookings!
The BBMF provide fantastic value for money, a quick look at their flypast/display list shows this.
When the sad day comes when the last veteran passes away, surely thats when a memorial flights job becomes more important?
That said, I am surprised that the MoD haven’t looked at the civvy warbird world and thought maybe there are enough Spits and Hurri’s to allow them to discharge their commemorative duties, particularly if ‘Just Jane’ ever does make it back into the air.
I hope it never comes to that, the BBMF are the very epitome of professionalism in all their facets of operation and long may they continue.
Back on topic, the Thunder City jets could not have found themselves unemployed at a worse time.
Maybe F-111buff’s ‘mothballing’ solution is the best.
Some fantastic old photos on that link, I really enjoyed my ‘Bluenoser’ education last year reading ‘Bluenoser Tales’, ‘The Bluenosed *******s of Bodney’ and ‘George Preddy- Mustang Ace’ and included a visit to Bodney tower and the old 487th FS dispersal.
I had trouble locating a copy of ‘Bluenoser Tales’ until ‘Punchy’ Powell pointed me in the right direction!
Completely agree about the atmosphere of SM.
I’m sure the gorgeous P-51 photo was taken at Gablingen in Germany, it was part of the occupation forces, hence the orange and yellow band around the fuselage.
I understand all the 105s are “D”s.
Many of the surviving 105s are “B”s so I’s think a stach of later variants would be welcome.
I’d imagine a museum could contact the NMUSAF and inquire about getting one.
‘D’ models?………bet they have fascinating combat records.
Glad the original story was wrong, the ‘Thud’ was one hell of a jet, some great books on it too.
Was indeed a great day, loads of highlights……..the P-51’s (Horsemen and the four ship)…….the Skyraiders, Mikael Carlsons DR1 display reminded me of 56 Sqns account of how Voss flew his DR1 during ‘that’ combat.
The P38 is a beauty.
There were no ‘look round the stalls’ acts at all today, a fantastic display, well done to all involved.
PS…….lovely to see Rob Davies reunited with the ‘Doll’ for the weekend……Woodchurch and Headcorn are too quiet without them.

“Kenley seems to have an active and enterprising air display committee”.
Early days as yet but I just thought I’d mentioned that with the demise (for the forseeable future) of the Biggin Hill airshow and a “now” corresponding lack of flying displays in South East London (Kent/Surrey) there is a proposal for a charity “themed” airshow to be held at Kenley every 2 years (2012, 2014, 2016 etc) to try and partially replace Biggin? The initial one is hopefully to be held over the weekend of 15th/16th September 2012 (after the Olympics restrictions) and will be something along the lines of a 1930’s “Empire” Air Day – featuring as many biplanes (Hawkers, Gladiators, Stearmans etc) as possible plus a few Hurricanes, maybe the Short nose Blenheim (?) or DC2 from Holland (Aviodrome), BBMF and to close the “Reds”.
We are currently trying to canvas for sponsors and the show is being organised externally to the “Friends of Kenley” committee.
More details as they become clear. Watch this space!
Sounds promising, the axing of the Biggin show was a mistake, we are used to things coming to an end due to the current financial climate, but the Air Fair was attracting record crowds.
The people behind the decision are a disgrace.
Best of luck with the Kenley idea, it is a lovely setting and I had my very first flight there at a show in 78.
I was glad I finally went to a BBMF Kenley flypast, the great British public were on their best behaviour too!
‘Hurricane-The Last Witnesses’ by Brian Milton is a worthwhile read, there are interviews with the surviving Hurri pilots from the various theatre’s it served in.
The Haynes manual is another good read.
Just composing an email to TVOC in case ‘558 ever needs another base…….:dev2:
Really nice, crisp shots there Brian, even the grey clouds in the Catalina pic look superb!
Fast forward to 20…..er something and there is ‘Snafu’ in a Heritage Flight formation with an A-10 ‘Warthog’……I can dream.:D
