Its the ‘4’.
This one was being resprayed, the ‘5’ was immaculate and it would have been insane to have resprayed it IMHO.
The ‘4’ had been a racer, and was a lighter blue, I recall it carried a victory symbol of a Sea Fury…..I think.
In the pic, you can make out ‘101’ on the u/c door which tallies with the Warbird Registry bio for the ‘4’ (hope that makes sense)
Every so often it was taken out of the hangar for a run up, it looked a whole lot better when it arrived at Biggin in 88, in the pics you can see the paint had been rubbed down for painting.
I think it may have been this one………………….

Thanks for posting those pictures.
The second from last shot was taken at Biggin Hill, my local.
Earlier in the thread, Grover Hall’s ‘1000 Destroyed’ was recommended, I’d also like to mention James Goodson’s ‘Tumult in the Clouds’ for some great Blakeslee references.
Very sad new’s indeed, Don seemed to have outlasted them all, it seemed he would go on forever.
The 4th Fighter Group first fired my interest in the Eighth Air Force, I second the recommendation for ‘1000 Destroyed’
What a great aviator and personality.
R.I.P. Colonel Don
The Vulcan is the Amy Winehouse of the air display world with its no shows:p
Seriously though, this will happen as people have pointed out, given the complexity and time out of service of the jet.
Just hope it doesnt adversely affect the fundraising effort as people, who had planned their trips, grow despondent and cynical about the whole set-up:(
The Jetphoto’s link provides much more info on the incident than I’ve seen elsewhere.
Nice job by the pilot.
Really nice pictures guys, capturing the unique spirit of the airfield better than I’ve ever seen before.
I was there today committing aviation…….sadly I didnt bump into that pair of saucestresses 😉
I’d normally leave home for Dux for a Sept or Oct show at a leisurely 8.30 from SE London……….on seeing the Vulcan listed, better make that ‘0 dark thirty’:p
Speaking of ‘hairy’ landings………is ‘Miss Helen’ still at Duxford recovering from her little ‘stumble’?
Beautiful…….and nice to see one of the lesser publicised units markings on a P-51.
Thanks for that B VI, I did wonder.
Glad ‘Miss Velma’ was passed fit in time.
C of A application being processed.
Answered my own question:o
BBD was outside the Squadron on tuesday.
Just read JJ’s reference to Lee Proudfoot and quite agree, all of the OFMC pilots are in the Ray Hanna mould.
Bernard Chabbert referred to Ed Shipley as the best P-51 driver in the world, and I wouldnt disagree, but I’d add Alistair Kay to the list of contenders, I love his displays in ‘Ferocious Frankie’.
That was sunday, he did appear to be a smidge over the crowd.
Back to the original theme of noises, I was surprised at the racket the P-51’s undercarriage makes whilst being cycled.
I had just arrived at Legends on sunday to see ‘Miss Velma’ jacked up and having her undercarriage attended to under the watchful eye of Mr Grey, Steve Hinton and Ed Shipley.
Whilst the undercarriage is in motion, there is quite a high pitched noise which obviously wouldnt normally be evident whilst flying.
By the way, I hope ‘Miss Helen’ is on the mend.
To ‘the bump’ There was no fuel leak on Saturday, that was an overflow for when the electric pump is on but the fuel cut off is pulled back, the only place the fuel can then go is overboard through the drain.
Thanks for clearing that up, that’ll teach me for listening to idle gossip:o
I have a soft spot for ‘Miss Helen’, can’t wait to see her back in the air where she belongs:cool:
