I didnt have a problem with the witterings of the Guinot gal………but, at Biggin Hill, the Blades commentatoress did irk me somewhat…..she sounded like the popsie who presents Dancing on Ice, Holly Willowtree or whatever her name is……anyway I don’t watch it:o

I am reminded of a commentating incident from the Utterly Butterly days, poss 4 or 5 years ago? when they unwisely hired a commentator for their Duxford display who sounded like Timmy Mallett on acid or a very bad local radio DJ.
His narration was peppered with references to the off duty past times of the pilots and wingwalkers.
A number of us spent the display working out the quickest route into the commentary box to put him out of our misery.
Certainly the most embarrassing individual act narration I’ve witnessed.

The overall commentary at Legends, as I have already said, was very good.
You can’t go wrong with the likes of Brendan, Bernard, Melvin, Ron (as in David) or Strat Ritchie at a show.

Yes, the blog has a shot of the TFC guys getting to work on ‘Miss Helen’
I’m sure the commentators said Robs was in the Spit yesterday…….was Pete John in Miss H?

It is true that if you witness a serious incident, you never totally relax.
Earlier on during sundays display, ‘Nooky Booky’ worried me with what looked like a very low departure for the P-51 sequence.
This was more likely due to my vantage point, but it did quicken the pulse somewhat.

Secondly can the airfield authorities and the landowners get together and STOP members of the public standing in the field right at the end of the runway. It beggars belief that they don’t realise that should a pilot need to put down short of the runway for any reason, the last thing he needs is to be dodgeing onlookers standing on the final approach. If you really don’t want to pay to watch then walk up to Grange road and watch from there, you get a panoramic view of the whole airfield without putting yourself or others at risk

I quite agree, the loss of Martin Sargeant trying to dodge infringers on the runway in France in 01 springs to mind.

After a fuel leak on the Saturday, she was repaired and successfully run up as seen in the pics on sunday morning.
On another forum, posters claim she sounded rough during an air test before the display.
The pilot was high in the overhead in the approach configuration ie flaps down, and she was popping a bit, but then they can do when they are throttled back to land.
Anyone know who the pilot was?

That thread pretty much covers it.
The incident was being discussed all around by public and engineers alike, a power abnormality on finals according to one reliable source.
Posters will be along to lecture us about speculation before the AAIB have had a squint at the finer points.
That said,’Miss Helen’ was back on the flightline by half seven this evening with a bent port oleo, and scuffed prop tips.
The pilot did an exceptional job under the circumstances, lets hope the damage is rectified quickly so we can get this special lady, a genuine warbird, back in the skies where she belongs.

Got to agree with Neil, that Guinot 5 ship was an eye opener…….(led by Ultimate High’s Steve Hicks)……nicely choreographed and flown.
I particularly like the wingwalker with the predilection for blowing kisses at the crowd……..the little minx:p

A reliable source claimed the P-51 may have had a power problem on final, which may have led to the carrier style arrival……bent undercarriage……prop tips may have made contact, although at the time it did’nt look like they had.
Forgot to mention the commentators, first airshow in a while where I think the organisers got it spot on……Bernard and Melvin, well done chaps:cool:
Better than Sean Maffett by miles IMHO.

Superb display……if pressed for a highlight i’d say the B-17’s and the P-51’s……a fine tribute to the Eighth Air Force.

Oh, and get well soon ‘Miss Helen’:(

I’m getting excited already, what was the traffic situation on the way in?

Many people who had been down there since tuesday were expressing doubts as to whether the show would go ahead, but these people were routinely dismissed on another forum as doom mongers.
When these doubts were still being raised friday morning, I can’t say I was too surprised when the show was canned in the evening.

I am baffled as to why no pre-emptive measures were taken over a week ago, whether that be laying down bales of hay, or the aggregates we saw them chucking down at the eleventh hour.

Of course the weather wasnt the fault of the organisers, but sufficient prep of the public car parks was seriously lacking, I do hope they learn from not only this, but the ticket fiasco as well.

Here’s hoping she may attract the attention of another sponsor at Farnborough;)

I had no problem with the enthusiast day, or weekend displays at SBAC on the public days.
But before the RIAT cancellation, 558 was just going to be static during the week at Farn, I just feel that the displays during the week would have been better rescheduled elsewhere round the country to reach a wider audience, on another weekend.

I’m assuming, possibly wrongly, that because of the RIAT cancellation, the 2 displays have been allocated to SBAC during the week.
This maybe a sweeping generalisation, but I suspect amongst a typical trade day audience, there are a fair few hangers on who would neither recognise a Vulcan nor bother to contribute to its upkeep, preferring instead to avail themselves of the hospitality.
    Sour grapes rant terminated:mad:

Just as I feared…….the two displays not flown at RIAT are to be wasted on the trade types during the week.
Surely it would have been better for the PR campaign if 558 could have flown these displays at other events.
As I understood it, 558 was sponsored for RIAT and Farnborough.
