I’m pretty sure some of the runway was excavated, not near enough to preclude the use of most aircraft, but certainly its not its original length.
Would love to be able to fly into ‘Crooked Creek’, great memories of the Hog’s there……them’s were the days!
A really nice memorial, I loved reading about the exploits of the 56th Fighter Group…………shame the engraver mispelt the unit motto which should read:- Cave Tonitrum – (Beware the Thunderbolt)
I know you said military aircraft…….but I can’t think of one that raises my hackles sufficiently to spew forth about on here.
I can think of a dreadful (personal opinion) GA aircraft though, apologies to anyone who flies or owns/has a share in one…….the Piper PA28 family, made the mistake of having a checkflight in one for no other reason than curiosity, after falling in love with the lovely DR400.
I’ll never be unfaithful to the gorgeous Robin again!
The ‘Cherrytree/Worrier’ is an awful juggernaut of a plane:dev2:
And Moggy, don’t forget to factor in the travel expenses for the average Man U fan…………quite a journey from South London:dev2:
That is quite a steep ticket price for Kemble though, sign of the times.
Nice pics………and well done for mentioning the CGW admission times, a pain if you have a bit of a journey to Hendon.
90th anniversary of the Royal Air Force………01/04/2008
90th anniversary of the death of Manfred von Richthofen 21/04/2008
” ” ” James McCudden VC 09/07/2008
” ” ” Mick Mannock VC 26/07/2008
A couple there for WW1 buffs………….and not forgetting the 90th anniv. of the end of WW1 11/11/2008
I didnt realise that the former USAFE base at Bentwaters was being used to store and dismantle aircraft (see Jaguar section)
Good find that website, never seen it before.
Tis a tricky one.
If I had to choose between the two (as a long time attendee, and lover of both) I’d pick Legends.
The departure time for me for RIAT from SE London appears to be getting earlier every year and the event justifies a couple of days or a stay in a B & B which needs to be booked in advance, great if your circumstances allow.
The security checks, though necessary, are a pain for a variety of reasons.
The hike back to the car for lunch now there isnt on base parking.
And if the dear old Vulcan does turn up……..’go on the day’ punters can forget it,you’ll probably end up abandoning the car 10 miles from the airfield and walking, unless the Vulcan is on at six……
Actually, its not a tricky decision at all:p
Tough one……..I’d say my 1/72 Dragon P-47 in the markings of Ralph K Hofer of the 4th FG.
Wish some manufacturer would do Hofer’s P-51 ‘Salem Representative’…….especially Eagles International.
Apart from anything else, the weather is iffy tomorrow, better the second half of the week.
It looked like the Vulcan to the Sky stands were doing well yesterday at Duxford, hope they had a nice cash injection, I dumped my loose change on the way out as did many others.
Just had a look at last months Flypast but the other Yak 3 in there has different markings to this. It would be excellent if it was staying at Headcorn! I was up at headcorn for the Flying Proms last weekend, absolutely brilliant display by the two Mustangs (Janie and BBD).
Blimey mate, you’re right there! Rob Davies buzzed Headcorn in true Ray Hanna style, long time since I’ve been stirred by a warbird display like that, would love to see Alister Kay display ‘Ferocious Frankie’ in that setting.
The Yak is gorgeous, can’t wait to see it.
Sadly the only thing this thread proves is that once again Moggy has no place as a moderator on this or any other forum, as he is incapable of seperating his personal opinions from his moderator duties.
Rather like your moderating days on UKAR DB:dev2: 😉
Completely agree with Skybolt by the way.
Was ‘Brooklyn Bum’ back?……Ed Shipley had to do a precautionary landing into Brize coming back from Fairford last Monday.
I echo the sentiments about the Shackleton, good to see it……and the Victor, getting some long overdue TLC.
I absolutely agree with the comment about Al Kay and his display in Ferocious Frankie. His passes down the runway on Saturday brought back fond memories of Ray Hanna.
Actually, I think he had got up that morning, looked at the sky ( a 500k sky for sure), remembered he is really, deep down, a glider pilot, and reverted to doing competition finishes…but in a P51.
Way to go, Alistair.
COI..a glider pilot.
Al was the same at Biggin this year, Ray Hanna would have approved.
All the OFMC pilots fly in that ‘Hanna’ style.
Camping at Fowlmere and getting at at 6.00? Luxury. I used to dream of camping at Fowlmere.
I had to sleep in an old septic tank on a rubbish tip in St Neots. I got up half an hour before I went to bed, and put on my old hob nailed boots with no soles, or nails. Then I had to carry my father AND my grandfather in an old sack all the way to Duxford.
When we got there, the first aeroplane we saw was an Easy Jet 737. I was so disgusted, I sold my relations for medical experiments, and donated all the funds to the ‘Doodlebug To The Sky’ appeal. It was the best show yet-I was even angrier than last year.
😀 😀
Question for any seasoned American airshow goers, do the American public ridicule any British team/demo commentators?
I’m looking forward to RIAT and seeing the Thunderbirds again, but am dreading the predictable xenophobic comments from Ken Livingstone soundalikes during the routine.
Sure, some of their patriotic fervour and ‘different’ musical taste can grate, but then so can the anti US diatribe……..besides, if the Indian Air Force or similar bring over a team in the future, you won’t get away with ridiculing their commentator without being set upon by angry Guardian readers:D
Back to the thread in hand, superb show and nice catch getting the Heritage Flight, yes I would have liked more Spits in the tailchase but I’m being picky.
The Guinot’s added a nice barnstorming touch with their display in Stearmans that set many a ‘stang and Jug pilot off on their airforce careers.
Difficult to pin down a highlight, I loved the lot and thought the Alex Henshaw tribute was so nicely put together.
A big well done to the organisers, pilots, engineers, groundcrew, volunteers and anyone else I missed out, I know you are getting Legends 2008 planning underway.
