I was there yesterday and heard no mention, unless it’s hushed up .

F-22 P-51 Heritage flight oh my indeed, never seen the F22 so this is something i cant wait to see.

    This is a definite positive.
With all the doom and gloom and conspiracy theories surrounding the future of airshows this is a ray of light.
Full marks to TFC for making this happen.

The Heritage Flight is an exciting development, provided I can ignore the predictable comments from the inevitable monotonous voiced Brits in the crowd complaining about the US commentary and music.:eagerness:

I’m going to RIAT and camping on the site adjoining the perimeter fence.
There is normally a host of local fields occupied by camping or visitors opposite the official crowd line, in fact one of the usual official viewing areas is on the airfield site but opposite the grandstand crowd line.
I’m assuming that this area will now be clear, and that all local residents who rent out their fields will not be permitted to do so?

By the state of ticket availability, it looks like airshows are not dead just yet…..

    One Day Tickets
    Friday 8 July – AVAILABLE
Saturday 9 July – SOLD OUT
    Sunday 10 July – AVAILABLE

    2 Day Tickets
    Friday 8 + Saturday 9 – SOLD OUT
    Friday 8 + Sunday 10 – AVAILABLE
    Saturday 9 + Sunday 10 – SOLD OUT

    3 Day Ticket
    Friday 8 + Saturday 9 + Sunday 10 – SOLD OUT

Yes , I’m having to go to RIAT on the Friday so I can make room for legends on the Sunday . One reason I am fed up with FIA bumping RIAT off its traditional weekend.

The Reds will just do a flat or rolling show?
At Biggin they opted for a stream take off rather than a formation one.
I’m surprised Farnborough is going ahead after all that’s happened, but then big business trumps everything.

Couldn’t you just register with Facebook? Use Ten Minute Mail to use a bogus email address not linked to your actual identity, use a John Smith user name, profile picture of a cat, that sort of thing?

Yep, I did somethings like that .
It was Hangar 11 that unwittingly got me on Facestalk……I mean book. I was fed up not being in the loop on news and unveilings etc so I signed up. As Nige said, it’s a great aviation news tool as is Twitter.

I can’t justify keeping a printer just for the odd airshow ticket (the carts dry up )
The IWM did say you can show your e-ticket on a phone or tablet which is fine but what of the silly car pass, hold the fone on a selfie stick out the window as I drive by to show to an attendant???

I expect there were quite a few who maybe don’t frequent the forums who were caught out by the all ticket fiasco.
You’d be surprised how many people out for the day see an airshow and decide to visit.

If like me, you love your aviation you will still attend, that is until costs become too prohibitive and if they pursue the car hating agenda and force people onto public transport.

“was the american air show an all ticket affair then? if so that perhaps that would explain the low attendance?”

Alf, Yes indeed it was, and yes that undoubtedly led to the low attendance.

Getting out was a pain again – I parked next to the AAM (on Land Warfare Hall side) and on leaving must have sat in the queue covering 400yds in about 30 mins. One valiant IWM employee on the road near the Anglians memorial was trying to make the lanes filtering into one actually work but when we eventually got to the exit gate there were four of the ‘contracted’ parking staff on the exit – one stood on the A505 controlling traffic, one in the gateway directing traffic to turn left and two “supervisors” leaning on the gate. Then a few yards down the road two more stood in the entrance to the field with a locked gate.
Parking on arrival, two of the parking staff were overheard talking and seems both were going home at 3pm.

If any portion of the new £5 parking fee is intended to actually help with parking or traffic control then the IWM should ask for a refund from the contractors…

No such problems at the Bailey Bridge car park, the usual fight to join 30 queues was non existent and I was shocked at how few cars were left . I started the engine and was on the M11 within 2 minutes.

The crowds were way down on the Sunday too.
I bagged a seat during the Red Arrows display in the Friends area and had my choice of others, this is unheard of normally.
The displays were further away but still enjoyable.
At one point mid display I left the enclosure for another browse of the stalls and one popular book retailer was beginning to dismantle its pitch and the others were just as quiet.
I spoke with a very well known aviation author who attends all the shows and his first words were, when the low numbers were brought up by me , that the all ticket policy was absolutely to blame, followed by the new ticket and car pass prices and lacklustre line up.
The IWM Duxford got a good kicking over the weekend lets hope they listen.
Away from these current irritations the revamp of the AAM impressed me but I’d rather the section on the CND peace camp had been left out, even it was part of the history. Those women weren’t peaceful protestors, disgusting vandals yes who no doubt went on to find success in Labour councils up and down the country.

The big screens erected added to the display by playing clips relevant to the display as well as helping those already
plagued with poor eyesight to view the distant aircraft.
This all said, I still had an enjoyable day and the main benefit was being able to start my car and drive out of the Bailey Bridge car park onto the M11 within 2 minutes, totally unheard of normally.
We need to tolerate this season and there are signs elsewhere that the CAA are willing to listen to exemption requests for some acts.
I am assuming the final AAIB report will be published outside of this season because that is another storm we need to weather.
Finally, Duxford aren’t RIAT and without a ‘star’ item or major aviation anniversary the all ticket policy is a failure.
The average last minute family punter isn’t concerned with changed crowd line distances and what the A and B axis is.
They wake up to a nice day and want to go to an airshow.
This last weekend, they were robbed of that spontaneity.

Indeed, a very sad outcome to what looked like a textbook ditching.

Looking at the recovery photos, the aircraft looks to have remained pretty much intact, it’s just so tragic that Bill Gordon lost his life.

    Paul

Indeed, one of the many perils in a ditching is if the pilot hits his head on the panel during impact and gets knocked out thus removing the ability to extricate himself.
A really tragic story to awake to this morning.

Interesting how the two sets of photo’s from two different cameras and two photographer’s tinkerings have altered the Blue Nose colour significantly from what it really is. They have become darker and more of a midnight blue whereas it is in fact a greyer colour veering towards a Prussian Blue. Matched directly to surviving paint chips on the doors of the wartime latrines at Bodney which were painted the same colour apparently. If you look at DCW’s first pictures from today, they are more faithful to the real colour as opposed to the later renditions which are notably different.

I was thinking the same thing ! If i was looking for a reference on the ‘Bluenoser blue’ ,the result in DCW’s pics are what I’ve read that they approximate to.
I wonder if ‘Miss Helen’ is going to be sharing ‘Fly in a Mustang’ duties with ‘The Shark’ at Goodwood?

I think Farnborough have something sorted for that but cannot for the life of me remember where I read it. As for Fairford, the Rhymes campsite/viewing area on the northern perimeter fence is not happening this year

I’m not sure if the Totterdown site will be business as usual. But I have yet to wade into the threads on various airshow forums.
