Spot on, I give 12-18 months and the new Building will be used for something else. At the end of the day it’s just another Vulcan. I would like to see 607 dismantled and saved before we waste money on keeping 558 under cover.

607 is really bad Phil, it won’t be moved other than by the elements or some big metal jaws. The intergranular corrosion on the spars is astonishing.

In the 1930s and ’40s, if not more recently, the terms ‘de-icing’ and ‘anti-icing’ seem to have been used interchangeably.

    [Edit] More recently:

They are very different things Lazy 8, as I’m sure you may know.
Obviously I’m not grinding an axe Peter, just saying what I see.

Let’s not confuse de-icing with anti icing. I hope Peter doesn’t think I’ve an axe to grind. Just saying what I see.

Life really is too short for this tittle tattle. Perhaps asking the moderators to adjust the title would work.

Title amended! 🙂 Actually we do not mind modifying titles upon request. It is no bother at all, Apparently you have an axe to grind over the admin of this forum so why not take it up with the webmaster instead of commenting like you did.. hence your comments removed…

I am more disappointed by ‘might of’.

    Moggy

Oh Mogster, I’m so glad I’m not the only one to feel that particular disappointment. Philistines.

Lots of mistakes in everyday life. Headlamps emit light, but people all them headlights. Gas and Liquids are both fluids, but people rarely call air a fluid.
Gas turbine engines are called jets, but the jet of hot air is what’s emitted. People say “haitch” for the 8th letter in the alphabet, when it’s really “aitch”.
    And on it goes.

Very romantic WH904. 607 was retained at Waddington for the reasons you state, it was a station asset that carried out the longest bombing raid, so why wouldn’t the station want to retain it?!

Remember, it’s an RAF machine, and clearly the RAFM didn’t create enough noise to get it under cover. It’s therefore in the right place for it.

You’re right of course that the 2015 RAF Waddington have little interest in it, not many can relate to it, the RAF is made up of young men and women, there’s not much financial flex to just splash the cash.

Towing it across to the WAVE would close that facility due to a lack of space, compromise the security of the aeroplane, create a risk too great for anyone to manage.

Ultimately it’s where it is for a reason. The best example from its military days is undoubtedly the Hendon example, so gorge on that. 607 is way beyond original or in good condition. Better let it slide away.

Ref the Manchester picture. I had no idea the new workshops were so old! I’ve definitely marched that corner a few times. Follow the left hand bend, right wheel up the hill, through the underpass, and up to Maitland Mess. Yum!

607 is a rot box. I went in it in 1995, worked on it in 1997, last went in it in 2005.
It was wet and mouldy in the mid nineties but fairly complete. Two years later we were drilling holes in it to let out the gallons of trapped rainwater, and patching the heavily corroded skins and a decade ago it had been robbed “significantly” to service 558. There is massive intergranular corrosion on the main spar, it won’t move again I wouldn’t have thought.

The Hawks the Red Arrows use are not modern Moggy, some are the same age the Lancaster was when it was gifted to the Battle of Britain Flight.

Agreed, the programme was quite good, but the narration was dire! It sounded a bit like jason statham……..ruddy awful!
Also, I know the reds are ok and quite ‘tight’, but flying 6 feet away from each other…..hmmmmm, I very much doubt that.

Yes they are in some manoeuvres. If I had the ability to post some images I took from the back seat of the jet pipe in front, it was within reach (if you could freeze frame, open the canopy and stand on the cockpit rails. No doubt about it).

Blimey, i’m going to agree with the man that posts with every breath he takes. You’re right charliehunt (there’s a joke it this sentence already!), but he was the wrong guy for the commentary, the Reds don’t need any dramas in connection with their displays for a long time yet.
