your definitions of generations is wrong.
It´s a fuzzy subject. But it´s generally correct.
Difficult, very difficult. I can’t decide on a single generation.
I don’t care so much about the 1st gen.
2nd gen has alot of beauties. Draken, F-104, F-4, EE Lightning, F-105 etc.
3rd gen has the Viggen, F-14, MiG-29, Su-27, Mirage 2000 etc.
4th gen, Rafale, Gripen, Eurofighter.
Can’t pick a single one. Perhaps the 3rd gen has the largest amount of beautiful types?
By the way, you never see the Demo doing extreme aerobatics like the Gripen C/D, Su35BM, Rafale, F/A-18E/F, Typhoon and MiG35 did. Why? Cause it’s not representative of final product.
Or maybe it`s because it has a fully packed flight test schedule, which is of higher priority than to travel around the world pulling G´s at airshows?
FWIW, the Demo did perform quite impressively at the airshow at Malmen little over a month ago. Pulling high G´s with a load of 4x AMRAAM´s, 2x IRIS-T and a drop tank. It was a single time event, I´m glad I had the chance to see it.

Since we don’t know the details, and since it’s only a matter of amateurs’ argumentation…
You could acknowledge that if Gripen was technically and ToT’ly’ on par with Rafale, for half the price, the gov would have changed his mind. Lula/Jobim aren’t mad, and buying costly military hardware for stupid reasons isn’t exactly what would happen in such a gov.
Obviously, if those discussions only “delay” the decision, then, Rafale, twice (or more) as costly as the Gripen, actually HAS good arguments.
It’s obvious to me that the reason why it’s taking so long is because Lula is trying his hardest to come up with ways to justify a Rafale purchase. A tough task, as the Gripen offers “almost as good as”, “equally good” “or better” performance in comparison to the Rafale at a considerably lower price.
Beautiful aircraft!:)
In the early 80’s there was an incident over the Baltic sea involving a Su-15 and a Viggen.
During this incident the Su-15 which was loaded with missiles decided to move behind the Viggen and locked on it. The Viggen pilot immediately took evasive action. During a sharp high speed pull-up the Su-15 wasn’t able to follow and crashed into the sea.
This incident was covered in several swedish news papers.
The odd thing that gets me is the sidewards opening cockpit canopy arrangement! Very Soviet/Russian style of the Indian`s!
It’s preferable to have a sideways hinging canopy, no need to remove the canopy when removing/fitting the ejection seat during maintenance.
The max allowable roll rate is controlled by the FCS. A Rafale can roll >400 degrees/sec if it was a requirement. A too fast roll rate only makes an aircraft harder to control. That is why roll rates are similar between different aircraft. 250-300 deg/sec seems to be preferable rates.
And then there is roll acceleration.

i think the rafale has the SH in STR speed because of better T/W
And most likely much lower drag. The Super Hornet struggles to maintain energy even when flying straight and level.
I guess what arthuro means is, that the targeting pod at that pylon, will be too long to carry also 2 x 1000Kg LGBs on the new centerline stations of the Gripen NG.
Compare your pic with this and see where the targeting pod ends, as well where the guidance kit of the bomb is:
The pylons needs to be modified, but the space is still avaliable.

Just want to clarify one thing. The LDP is mounted on “pylon 4”. This is a weapons station exclusively for pods. Thus it’s not replacing any weapons/drop tank.
An image showing the pylon, fitted with a LANTIRN-pod.

Now those are some excellent photos, Björn! Really excellent! Beautiful close-ups! And well done overcoming the terrible backlight! I had a really hard time with the sun in my face!
Thank you for sharing!:)
That is just common sense. You cannot only have advantages when you are the smallest. Otherwise there would be no medium ans heavy fighters…
You are forgetting THE major advantage for a smaller fighter, namely costs. For roughly the same price of one Rafale you get two Gripens which certainly is a much more potent force.
It never flew, but considering how tolerant todays engines are to disturbed airflow, AoA would pose no problem.

Superb pics! Especially the Hurricane taking off!:)
