A very good illustrated article about the Fauld Explosion can be found in After The Battle #18…..
The Aders book as recommended by Peter is regarded as the definitive history. It can be a little ‘dry’ to read – if you prefer first-hand accounts, I’d also recommend Theo Boiten’s two Crowood titles, ‘Nachtjagd’ and ‘Night Airwar’….
Mention of Denny Dobson prompted me to post the following pic which I took in December 2001. I was doing a little airfield exploration and Mr Dobson and his crew were most hospitable ( I have no idea what the aircraft is – all I know is that it’s not a Lanc or a Mossie….)

The new Corgi 1/72 617 Squadron ‘day camo’ Lancaster plus a book called ‘The Archaeology Of Airfields’……:o
You’re disqualified ! 😀
Here’s another easy one – photo actually taken today….

Now, that really is spooky….

Interesting posts here of a few hours wondering around Little Staughton and some bits and pieces of alloy, spark plug (merlin it says) RAF mugs etc.
I can think of worse ways to spend a day !
I have to confess (:o ) that I was the wanderer…..I’m still picking the thorns out after rummaging under those bushes. A few years back I found a ‘relic’ Merlin torque wrench in the same area. The very rusted sparkplug I found this time has exactly the same dimensions as an ‘as new’ one I have.
It’s not just about picking up relics, though – LS is a very historic place in remarkably good condition ; I only hope it stays that way and doesn’t meet the same sad fate as so many other operational airfields.
Susan Ottaway, has recently published a revised edition of her excellent biography entitled ‘Guy Gibson VC – The Glorious Dambuster’, incorporating much new information and many more photographs.
.
I recently bought a copy and it’s a nicely-produced update of the original. The whole of Chapter 9 ( ‘The Best Ambassador’ ) is devoted to Gibson’s tour of Canada.
…also on the Diecast Aviation Forum…..
According to the Nachtjagd War Diaries this Lancaster is believed to have fallen to the guns of the Bf110G-4 of Oberleutnant Martin Drewes of Stab.III/NJG1.
Although I have never seen any photos of KB976 in the collapsed hangar
Just out of interest, there is a sad photo of KB976 inside the collapsed hangar on page 162 of Garbett & Goulding’s ‘Lancaster At War : 5 – Fifty Years On’ ( Ian Allan 1995 ).
I was interested to see photos you had of an old runway, have you got anything similar with regards to old ww2 runways as they do interst me.
Sadly these are vanishing fast but I’ve been visiting them since 1979…..:o
Here’s a couple for you. The first is Thorpe Abbotts main runway taken in August 1988 ( US 8th AF, 100th BG B-17s ). Very shortly afterwards this last section was removed for hardcore and this view can no longer be seen.

And here’s the main runway at RAF Bourn ( 97 ( PFF ) Squadron Lancasters ) taken in the depths of winter 2004. It’s still there, but the view has been altered by the building of a new dual-carriageway at the end….

Pictures can never capture the atmosphere but I’m glad I took them, nonetheless.
Having never seen Just Jane, what condition is she in?
I took this last Wednesday….

…and externally she is immaculate. Of course, for all I know she could have many interior problems bearing in mind the time she spent languishing at Squires Gate in sea air, followed by years on the gate at Scampton.
I can still remember it now, smacked, straight home (we were at the shops) into bed with no tea etc.
It’s quite obvious that you were abused as a child and denied your fundamental human rights under EU Regulation A/XRW/679025 Subsection 27(D)AF9645 Paragraph 27(b). Please furnish us with with details of your parents in order that they may pay their debt to society……;)
