Well I guess that proves that the twin Beech is not a quick thing!!
Could have been tri-gear, I didn’t notice a tailwheel, but then, it was quite high when I saw it.
Does anyone wish to share any more info on this one??
Cheers
Willow
P.S. Hope it’s coming back!!
Beech 18
Happy New Year everyone (it’s been a while!)
Spotted over Ipswich at 13:15 Sunday 18th Jan (yesterday!)
Civilian Beech 18 heading Northeast 5000ft-ish.
It had large square wing tips, a pointy nose (more pointy than normal), and the high cabin that some later models had.
It was in Grey (lower half) and white (upper half).
It also sounded very nice!!
Anybody know the what/who/where on this one?
Many thanks
Willow
I reckon they should have a PA speaker free end of the flightline, some of us don’t want the commentary & shoddy music as we know what we are lookin at… 🙂
True, but some information is a good thing. For example, I always like to know who’s flying what. Besides, it’s quite fun to hear the infamous ‘know-it-all’ having to eat his words when the comentator proves him wrong.
If they could just keep the volume down, cut out the personal jokes such as all the ‘Sarah – woof’ comments we were all subjected to yesterday, and not waffle so much, that would be fine.

Saturday late afternoon – Merlin Spitfire SW bound over Ipswich.
Sounded a little rough (apologies to whoever’s pride and joy I’ve just insulted, that’s just how it sounded to me at the time)
Willow
I just wish the commentators would realise that their incessant chabbering is sometimes too much.
How about a little fermez votre bouche…
Spot on!! This was the only down side to an otherwise excellent day.
Many thanks to all the organisers, air and ground crews who did a fantastic job.
Even though we didn’t get a Gladiator pair at least they made the effort to fly the TFC machine (Sunday) which was much appreciated. So was the thought put into the layout on the ground. The B17s, B25s, A26 and Dak made a great line-up. The guys in period uniforms really added to the feel as well. Great.
Thanks also for dragging out the Spit 18 so we could get photos on the line, even though you knew it wasn’t going to fly:)
As for the flying, I think my favourite was the whole 3 1/2 hours (except the Guinots). The Dragon formation, the Hind + Nimrod, the 2 B17, the Bleriot, and the A26 and B25 all come to mind (although the A26 and B25 really need a special mention for being flown like fighters!). These are just the ones that stood out, all the flying was really top-class.
Other than the wall of windbreaks which had appeared by 830am (they really should be banned – maybe the could concrete the first 10ft back from the barriers to stop this sort of thing?) and which is beyond anybody control, the only down side was the commentry which, although accurate throughout, did seem to ‘go-on’ a bit at times. This wouldn’t have been so bad except the VOLUME AT THE LAND WARFARE END IS A BIT HIGH SO WHEN THE COMMENTATOR IS TALKING YOU CANT HEAR YOURSELF THINK LET ALONE HEAR THE AEROPLANES.
Other than that, one of the most enjoyable Legends that I can recall:D

P.S. Is it just me, or do Allison engined aircraft sound better than Merlin engined ones? (runs for cover)
Just to help the traffic situation even further, I understand that the F-22 will be flying at about 6pm both days. As this is one of the main attractions, most people will wait to see it, and then EVERYONE will try to leave at the same time.
All good fun
Willow
Thinking on, I hope they have a traffic system in place to let out all the people who turn up without tickets? As it’s off-airfield parking they’ll turn up, park, walk to the gate, be turned away, walk back to their car, and then what????
After the fiasco at Waddington last week, I think I’ll stick to Duxford and Old Warden!!
Antonov An12 mixing it with the Boeings on it’s way into Stansted at about quarter past 7 last night over Ipswich.
I don’t know if it technically counts as historic, but any aeroplane that still has somewhere for the tail-gunner to sit has got to be worth a mention!

I guess the organisers are assuming that most of their visitors are reasonably local, with only a small percentage of ‘die-hard’ enthusiasts usually travelling to both. Anybody that is that serious about it will probably still go to both anyway. Doughnut has already pointed out there are ways of doing it.
On the other hand, the organisers probably didn’t give it a second thought! Due to the dates this year, all 5 shows (Yeovilton, Waddington, Legends, RIAT, and Farnborough) can claim to be on their ‘usual’ dates!!
Anyway, given that I am now a family man, the bottom line is that RIAT will have to do without my £35 this year.
It’s an easy choice for me. Real aeroplanes will always win over paraffin burners (2 Galdiators! whoever dreamt of that ever happening!).
Besides, it’ll cost me £20 less in petrol (I have to drive past Duxford to get to Fairford!).
Willow
P.S. Is it true about Glacier Girl bringing a B17 with her this year from the States, or was it just an elaborate April Fools joke?
Don’t know if this ones been said:
Bucaneer – Banana Jet
Surely the Buccaneer was known as the ‘Brick’, certainly among enthusiasts.
Another one that hasn’t appeared here yet (I think) is…
‘S.L.U.F’ for the A-7. Stands for ‘Short-Little-Ugly’Fellow’ (or something like that!). Same idea as B.U.F.F. for the B52
I’ve also heard the ground-attack ‘E’ variant of the F-15 Eagle known as the ‘Beagle’, as in Bomber-Eagle.

Spitfire South of Ipswich heading East at 17:35 yesterday.
Definately a Merlin engined one, not a Griffon. Looked like it had the early style short rudder.
Anyone know which one?
Thanks
Willow
The TVOC webcam now appears to show it safely back down at Brunty.
Bl**dy good show!!:D 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
Fantastic news. All the doubters proved wrong and all the effort worthwhile.
Now it’s up, where is it coming down? Waddington?

With all due respect to friends and family of the pilot…
The crash of an aircraft at a public airshow is no different than a major car wreck, motor racing crash, fatal fire, terrorist attack.
It is news and its the media’s job to report (and show) it.
As a former journalist, I don’t see anything wrong with showing the aftermath of a crash…as long as the photos aren’t graphic.
I see your point but do not agree. What the media sometimes fails to appreciate is that a lot of people do not WANT to see footage of ANY of the above. Just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should. If you don’t see anything wrong with it, then it may be that you’re looking at it the wrong way?
As you can tell, I’m firmly in the ‘you can tell us, but we don’t need to see it’ group. I believe that I’m not alone.

Anything that’s plain GREY (or GRAY, if you’re on that side of the pond).
All those F-16s and Tornados, all in monotone GREY. How dull is that?
I even include the RAF transport fleet in that, even the VC10’s. A beautifull aeroplane ruined by being GREY.
Airbus and Boeing airliners may be mind numbingly dull, but at least they’re not GREY!
