Oerlikon Cannons were fitted on Merchant ships ran by the crew of Royal Navy, My grandfather were a gunner on such ships.
I suspect these came from a vessel in the harbour and spent shells were brought home for the kids.

6mm would it have been metric thickness thats if your bothered about been fully acurate and mild steel or probably hardened.

If this was mine i would soak it in wd40 or similar oil and leave it for 2 days keep giving it a squirt then clean any gunge out with a old tooth brush and gently unscrew the front ring with the finger notches on.
Going in without the above a receipe for disaster.

This accelerated wear which components are suffering the most?
Is the engine built to exactly the same standard as a 1940 engine or closer tollerances with new engine oil of today which is thinner?
Do the cylinder heads have harden valve seats?
