Pete TrumanI take your point about ‘Children in Need’ being mentioned every 5 minutes by TW on Radio 2, it does get a bit too much.
On the other hand, despite being part of our furniture, TW is Irish, the demonstration in Belfast by Sinn Feinn against the British troops back from Afghanistan parading last week shows the conficts that still exist between many people over there. No way am I anti Irish, I love ’em, but the 90th Anniversary of the ending of WW1 must stir up many memories of bad events over there during that time.
I know that many brave Irish people joined up to fight for the UK during WW1 and WW2, in some cases it must have been very difficult for those with strongly politically motivated family members, especially on their return, it’s not a subject I know much about, does anyone have much personal experience of this.
Whatever you think of the ‘X Factor’, Louis Walsh from Dublin wears his poppy with pride on the show.
Incidentally, I was talking to a veteran selling poppies outside the co-op yesterday, he reckoned that sales were considerably down this year, it was interesting to note during our conversation that it was the old biddies who put money in the tin, everyone else hurried by looking at the floor.
Incidentally, for those going to DX, I shall spend the 2 minutes silence outside the entrance to the LWH, it’s a poignant place for me.
Pete TrumanI was interested by a fact mentioned on the ‘One Show’ on BBC1 last night, that more poppies have been sold this year than since the first Rememberance Day after WW2. Is this because the media have made an effort to remind us that it’s the 90th anniversary of The Great War, or are the public actually considering the plight of our servicemen in current conflicts, whether they agree with them or not, what do you think.

What upsets me about the whole affair is that Ross has been replaced on Saturday morning on Radio 2 by Richard Mallinson, the most dull, boring, patronising radio presenter ever to grace any radio station, talk about pretending to be safe, if thats the best they can do, then it’s back to Planet Rock Radio on a saturday morning for me.

We all surely with our interest and knowleddge of Aviation, and thus warfare, hold dear to our hearts the people that have, and still sacrifice their names for our freedom.
Because we may not contribute to a thread dedicted to it dosen’t mean we feel any less about rememberance – indeed some of us may feel the subject is so big and meaningful that we have little to say in comparison.
Even us ‘rivert counters’ have hearts, and any subject regarding the the First World War in particular is very emotional.I shall go along to the parade at Worcester Cathedral again.
Well done, would it have been mentioned had I not brought it to your attention, possibly, who knows, with exceptions, there are some sad gits on here, I can’t be bothered anymore.
Pete TrumanKev, that was a fantastic contribution, my grandfather, Robert Dalton Truman served in the ‘Great War’ but seemed to have had a charmed life, I have his war diaries and photographs, but my computer has a fault and I can’t download them for all to see. He was a member of the Royal Scots and seems to have taken part in everything from the beginning but somehow survived, I still have his cap and Sam Browne Belt, what more can you say.
Pete TrumanKev, thanks for your words, I was hoping you would make a comment as I consider you to be, like me, a genuine true believer in these matters of rememberance, as for preaching to the converted, perhaps they would like to make a comment on the event instead of continuing to winge on about rivets. Do they really think on these events everyday, I think not.
I think it’s very sad that not many people have contributed to this thread and made their own thoughts clear, there must be many tales to tell, perhaps some of you can make a start and do something positive and reply and think of those who died to make this thread possible.

The problem with the other end is the gradient, the land falls away considerably and the amount of fill to build this up to form a runway extension would be huge. It’s not beyond the bounds of possibility to do it, but it would cost a fortune, not even allowing for any land purchase, which I have no doubt the local land owners would take full advantage of.
I reckon a 200m extension to the runway would allow anything to land there, but at what cost, it would probably look pretty wierd as well, we have to have some sympathy for the local planners who would no doubt be appalled at this great earth bank in their treasured Cambs countryside, and I wouldn’t blame them for objecting to it, even if they considered themselves lucky to have DX on their doorstep.

Remember the Goons, did Mr and Mrs Average like them, I doubt it, but they are considered the immortals of broadcasting. Then we can follow it up with Monty Python, same thing, I used to cringe when my parents were around to watch it, but they are considered the all time classic greats, no matter what anyone thought of them at the time, believe me, according to the ones that count, whoever they were, they were considered the business.
Programmers have to present those on the edge and accept what outrages that they do, if Ross and Brand, former doyens of the BBC, for whatever reason, were considered to be allowed to do what they wanted, thats the BBC’s problem, not Ross and Brands, it was a recorded programme, they have obviously been given free range and encouragement to do what they want, fair enough, if they want to extend their juvenile pranks, they must have been given the opportunity to do so. Mail readers may think it’s naff along with a large majority of the population, but did they actually hear it, or care if they did.
Personally, I think that Wossy is very talented, but needs control, I will miss him for the next few months, even though he can be a pain in the backside sometimes. As for Brand, personally I think he’s a pathetic, juvenile, junky t####r, but he obviously is related to by certain people so he deserves his place in whatever he does, his TV programme is assured so thats all right then, no doubt he will profit from this small, but interesting contretemps.
It’s hard to judge who we love and who we don’t, personally I could pour a can of petrol over Harry Hill, he is one step down on the ladder from Timmy Mallet, but the public love him, so what do I know, he should have used his talented profession as a doctor rather than make pathetic, childish comments on home movies, but I’m obviously wrong, but we all have our own opinions that don’t relate to anyone elses, we have to appreciate that and accept what is thrown at us, including these two sad pillocks.
