It was sunday, and if I could find my leads I would play my video soundtrack back to you so you could equally cringe, I would have thought that the commentary was written for both days so you must have had either serious earache or a badly extended coughing and sneezing fit, it would appear that no one else was seriously listening to what exactly was being said.

Pete TrumanThere seems to be a general agreement on here that the USAF Heritage Flight was a worthy starter for the show, and quite right too, it’s a very rare and privilaged event to see such a performance over here, I once saw them at Mildenhall for the 50th anniversary Airfete I believe.
I also agree though with the poster who thought that the ‘Lisa Simpson’ commentary was propogandist, while laughing at the general delivery, the constant references to ‘this is how we kill Iraq’s with Gatling guns and bombs’ was a bit much. I know that most of the a/c we all come to see and love are designed to be killing machines, the Lancaster has probably more notches on it’s wings than most, but to make a silly commentary about an on going conflict thats very contraversial, costing lives on both sides, and whether you support it or not, was not very tactful to say the least.

Those places by the fence are hard won by enthusiasts who got their butts out of bed and onto the airfield in time to claim a place by the fence.
I got there at 09.30 yesterday and the fence space was fully occupied so i sat on the tankbank for the first time since legends began.
I thought I would be early enough to sit by the fence,but the guy I was chatting too on the bank had been there since 08.00 and travelled from Southampton.
I had to drive about 90 miles to duxford,I’m not exactly sure how far away Braintree is but i’d guess about 50 miles so not a problem for you to get there earlier assuming you have your own car.You’ll just have to get your butt out of bed next year the same as I will !!!

Well actually, I got my butt out of bed at 5:30, but like Stuart, I wasn’t prepared to chain my chair to the fence at an ungodly hour and p### off round the airfield. I even noticed that people had put their chairs in front of the yellow crash gate opposite the AAM, despite the large signs telling you to keep clear.
I did put out some chairs for the BBMF event but the attendance was no where near as large and I had 2 pensioners with me, one of whom couldn’t walk very well and they pretty much stayed in their seats all day apart from toilet trips.
Anyway, I intend to keep up my patronage of the Friends of TFC and keep clear of the fence dog fights in future.

Had a brilliant day today, for one reason or another, one of the most enjoyable airshow events I’ve ever been to.
I got in with no trouble at 9:00 and was parked near the American Museum.
What immediately p####d me off was that despite the small number of people around at that time, the whole of the flightline was completely full of wind breaks and chairs, all unoccupied of course, what a bloody cheek. Deciding that the tank bank would end up being the usual ignorant push and shove, I went over to the TFC Friends enclosure, signed on the dotted line and had a marvelous time, and view, and nice people, sitting right next to Sally B, and all the pilots walking past and having a chat including Steve Hinton, is he laid back or what, everyone jumping into cockpits and revving up for the Balbo and he’s slowly walking back to the P-39, chatting to everyone on the way, has a good taxi technique too, ie extremely fast until the last second.
Thought the flying was the business, enjoyed every minute of it, have to agree with someone on another thread though, I think that the Typhoon would have the F-15 for breakfast in a dog fight.
On top of all that, I went inside my favourite, the Cat, and got to talk to the pilot in the cockpit, I threatened to hide in a bulkhead for their display, but they were wise to that, someone had tried it before.
I was walking along the stalls when I passed someone that looked familiar, it looked like a very good friend of mine that moved to the west country 20 years ago and whom I had lost contact with. I lost him in the crowd, but an hour later, we met up, a great moment and we spent a few hours together catching up.
So that was my day, even my new batteries for the camcorder worked a treat, madam is still not well and has gone to bed, or is it just an excuse to stop me putting on the vid and reliving a great day.
Just one comment, my mate, being a subscriber, was expecting the Flypast enclosure to be there, but it wasn’t, what happened.
Pete TrumanI remember the Stansted visit very well and have some great slides of the event. The shuttle arrived on a friday and departed the following monday.
It was parked up on the large hardstanding next to the old terminal building and public access was allowed over the weekend.
We went late on the saturday afternoon, along with most of the population of East Anglia and London. In those days access to the airport was along a small road off the old A120 with traffic light control where you went across the end of the runway.
We came from the Braintree direction and came to a grinding halt 2 miles from the airfield and had to leave the car in Takeley and walk, along with several thousand other people. I remember the grass verges on either side of the road were worn away by countless feet.
Eventually we reached our goal, but by then it was getting dark, fortunately, I had my camera tripod with me and took some very atmospheric shots, the whole scenario was floodlit.
On the monday I got lucky, I was working a couple of miles away and had a sympathetic boss. I arrived at the traffic lights just as they turned red and got out of the car in time to photograph this huge monster taking off right in front of me, it was pretty awesome.

The Pike have dissapeared, just vanished, I suspect that a Heron may have paid a call, we have quite a few in the area, apart from that, the various inhabitants are thriving and a group of whirlygig beetles have appeared from nowhere.
More interesting have been the reed buntings.
Apparently listed as condition red and dissapearing by the RSPB, the female was visiting the bird table at 20 second intervals. I traced the nest to a clump of marsh grass about 50m over the otherside of our fence, no, I didn’t go near it.
While the female was taking seeds off the table, the male was trawling the bushes for insects and grubs, so we bought a special insect food mix and put it out for them, we’ve never seen parents work so hard
We have’nt seen them for a few days so the brood must have flown, I was surprised to find them nesting so close to houses, we got very worried about the local cats and drunken youths on their way back from the wine bar.
They have since been replaced on the table by constant visits by a pair of corn buntings, another surprise, I have’nt tracked their nest yet.
Having lived in a village for years, we are surprised by the variety of birdlife that we get in downtown Braintree, it must be a very eco friendly place.
