The MOD Air Historical Branch had a remit for preserving certain airframes and used storage at several bases eg Biggin Hill. When the RAF museum was founded the ownership of these were transferred to the museum. I have a list of airframes in an RAF museum publication from the seventies which also notes that the aircraft of the BOB memorial flight whilst still on MOD charge were also part of the RAF museum reserve collection.

Many of them were only loaned to RAFM and remained in MOD ownership until donated to the RAFM the late 90s (The individual histories on the RAF Museum website gives details – e.g. Bf109E, Bf110G ).

The survival of many is fortuitous, as although planned there were a lot of airframes stored for historical/museum purposes that were scrapped when space was needed in the late 40s/early50s.

Was that the one that involved parts of G-MKIV with other bits from it’s donor airframes?

I suspect he saw this as a five year post-RAF job. Be interesting to see who gets the job now and his/her background.

BS119 is usually illustrated in the standard day Fighter scheme on other sheets, however the pilot is noted as claiming it was finished in greys:

I always note that Ocean Grey appears very light in some photos

This does, however, remind me of something sadly lacking in the UK, and that is a dedicated museum for Civil machines – light, aviating for the use of. OW aside, the civil stuff does sit a trifle incongruously within what are in reality, often military collections, such a Hendon. I”ve often mused that it’d be great if OW was extended to include a static section, artefacts et al. At the very least, it’d be nice if the RAFM/IWM made a heap of all the civil stuff, say at Cosford.

East fortune probably has the best collection that I can think of.

    Neptune
    Catalina

    Pucara

The Neptune and Catalina at least represent ex-RAF types for which there is no genuine RAF equivalent (although from memory there used to be at least one genuine, un-modified ex-RAF P2V5 in America) and the Pucara fits in with the ‘adversary’ types.

The Jungmann, Flying Flea and RF-84 don’t really fit at all. I’d go further and bring the Swift back as well!

In terms of helicopters, it’s interesting that the Skeeter isn’t relevant but the MH-53 is!!

Interesting reading that more than just the wing was found.

A quick look in Skies Over Scapa last night only showed 1 mk Vc accident on the Islands (a forced landing IIRC) but I forgot to note the details!!

aeronaut -pity you couldn’t persuade the curator to move the Bird Dog on and replace it with a Auster I which really was the start of the AAC !

The Cessna as a type does at least have a relationship to the AAC:

If this is part of a wider examination of the collection, then it may perhaps mean the end for the bitsa P-51.

On the subject of acquisitions (and relevancy) – anyone know what’s happened to the IL-2 and A-20 they were supposed to be getting?

If we’ve ruled out all the others, what does that leave? FBSA Phantom, perhaps?

I’m thinking Sea Harrier, but I’d need to do a bit of digging!!

I went to Hendon many years ago and got a copy of the booklet ‘A Very Special Lancaster’ from memory (as it went missing!) the man that painted the ‘NO ENEMY AIRCRAFT. . .’ on it when it was with 467 helped in it’s restoration before going to Hendon, wonder if he painted the second one on? .

I turned to my right and took my copy from the bookshelf, the airman was LAC E.Willoughby.

It’s an interesting little booklet (I picked mine up for pennies at a jumble sale) – has details of all of her missions (not the detail in the current RAFM History though!), and also reveals that she went for a full overhaul from 3/8/44 to 17/11/44. Also has a pic of her stripped back to the metal in the early 70s. The profile drawings of her as ‘Q’ and ‘S’ acknowledge the fuselage window difference.

Why?? They bring it upon themselves. It irks me that they try to portray their policy as “normal”. It is not, I know of no other avaiation musuem in Britain that has a blanket ban on photography. As others have said, today, using the technology and equipment available it would be possible to suruptiously circumvent the ban. I am sure those with a criminal intent would resort to that if it helped their purpose.

    Planemike

Whilst it’s not nomal in the Aviation sector, it is common in other museums/stately homes etc.

That said, I don’t agree with it, although I do know of researchers who have been allowed to take notes (but not photgraphs) on a pre-arranged visit.

Regarding hidden cameras, I’ve used equipment that they would never be able to spot.

Looks like they only borrowed her! From Facebook:

s the owner of XR770 I can fill you all in lol! We took her on 13 years ago as part of a collection, we did not do anything with her as the council would not and could not afford to chip in. We then moved in 2008 and asked the council what we should do with her and they said they had neither the time or the inclination to do anything with her. They said we could have her and basically good luck to us! We took her and 5 Sqn then called us asking if we would loan them one of our Lightnings! Initially we said no but after a lot of persuasion we said ok! We were promised help to prepare, rub down and get her painted but sadly this didn’t happen we had the help of one pilot when he had time and so me, my Husband and our two kids went to Waddington nearly every night and every weekend for three months and together with the amazing Steven Hand and his fellow painter we got her ready for painting. Steve Hand made a fabulous job of her and there she STILL sits at Waddington. We have had some amazing times with her but unfortunately we have to sell her to enable us to re furbish the other love of our life our twin seater. We have also been very disappointed with the way she has been neglected by the Squadron. We have now got a few folk interested in her and we will only let her go to a good genuine home. So there you have it from the horses mouth x

Not sure whether the sliver/orange paint scheme would be applicable in any case. It seems to have only been applied to the first few aircraft to enter service, so it might well have been delivered in red/white/grey colours. As long as it isn’t black I think everyone is happy! 🙂

First three if my memory isn’t playing tricks – it was one of the first, if not THE first, types flown in the ‘new’ Training Command scheme

Aeroplane was always inferior to FlyPast and rather amateurish too. That said, there is nothing wrong with a bit of competition, so long as it is not second rate.

Strange, my thoughts (certainly in the 90s and early 2000s) were exactly the opposite, certainly where Historic stuff was concerned
