Sure would be nice to get this regristation and ID mess fixed once and for all. We know it is not the the ID on N251L. Shame to see such a beauty grounded for lack of proper paperwork.
??????
It has been sorted, as reported on here.
The FAA concluded that N251 was the real (or should that be, contains more of the original) Twilight tear & so can carry the USAAF S/N.
Looks lovely
It’s [cough]not[cough] Twilight tear , ……. anymore
Heres the scenes of the low pass in the film including from the cockpit.

It would take a lot of research to actually identify just where they were entoumbed but there must be maps or whatever of the airstrip as of 1950 period, as i recall from the drawing the original control tower was at one end of the runway to the left.
It was then moved over to the right side of the runway and the trench dug on the same side toward the top end of the runway.
Terry
This is what must be the airstrip today, I would think it has changed quite a bit in 50 years !, although it doesn’t mean that any remains are not still there.

Whilst on the subject of scrap, there used to be a aircraft scrapyard on Finchampstead Ridges, I think it was one of Staravia’s and I also believe it was destroyed by a fire. Does anyone have any knowledge of this, its exact location or what was stored there. I only ask because I’m currently living less than half a mile away.
Yes it was Staravia’s & yes it was totally destroyed by fire, I knew it well from about ’88 as a friend of mine had a workshop there. As Dave said it is now Blackwater View off Lower Sandhurst Rd & the sheds were where the four houses are now.
Major parts were JP T-3 fuselages, Vampire T-10 pod, Hunter gun pack.
Aircraft I found parts for there ( these were boxed new/reconditioned spares not scrap) were Airspeed Oxford (main wheel tyres), Beech 18 RCAF (rudder), Vampire (loads of undercarriage units),P-80 u/c door, Seahawk, Shackleton,Canberra, camera guns
Reclaimed/scrap, F-86 panels ,Vampire panels, loads of prop. blades
Quite a few parts disappeared over the years I knew it & I know of somebody involved in the buying/selling of old aircraft parts visited the yard on more than one occasion.
It is about 3 miles, by road, from Sonning to Woodley. One has to ‘dog-leg’ via the bridge over the railway line at Shepherd’s Hill.
No need to go via. Shepherds Hill, the direct route would be by Butts Hill Rd or Duffield Rd.& Pound Ln. Only 2 miles.
Anyone care to explain? Are there 2 mustangs with the same serial or something?
In a word ,yes.
Will be intresting to find out dear ol’ 26158 new N-number. 44-63864 is already – since 1960 – used on Mustang N42805…..
I thought 44-63864 (the USA ,not UK one)was N251L on the US register when it crashed ?
I’m not surprised that Mr Weeks is having difficulty finding someone to overhaul his Sabre engines. No one would be damn-fool enough to give him a price for doing it bearing in mind the complexity of the beast and, likewise, even Mr Weeks is not going to write a blank cheque to get it done.
Additionally, can you imagine anyone accepting any liability for the job? Without that acceptance, no-one would have it done. We’re talking about the most litigous society in the world aren’t we?
It would be incredible to hear a Sabre running and to see the engine/airframe flying though, if it ever happened.
Anon.
The one at Recardo’s I mentioned earlier I was told was rumoured to have quoted at £1,000,000 for the rebuild , and that was a few years ago now.
The one I had in mind near Loch Skerrow may be still there then.
I used to have details of one in that area (on old dead PC) , near/next to a disused railway IIRC ?
Kermit Weeks was having trouble finding someone to overhaul his engines, I don`t know what the score is now.
Pete
Friends of mine used to work at Recardo’s at Shoreham, they had what I assume was one of Kermits Sabre’s just sat there for several years (about 8 years ago) & could be still there. It was said to be there for rebuilding to running condition.
Three at least in France, at Caen, Bayeux and Tilly sur Seulles (or were …).
Plus one at the Musée de l’Air ?
I’ll try & chip in here , unfortunately not precise info.
I believe Kermit has 2 engines for his Tempest, one of which from the USA ? & new ?
A Canadian Museum has a sectioned ‘working’ one on display, info now below
National Aviation Museum in Ottawa
Oh Blohm und Voss it, you win Kenneth! Will duly add 99.9% to reverse of photo.
But what’s the ‘Anson/Siebel/KZ etc’ in the background?

Alan
I would say 100% as the buildings are very distinctive ,now Copenhagen Int. Airport Google earth shows the buildings still there in 2005.

Unless I’ve missed it, all the comments on the Lib. observe an all white scheme , but it seems the wings are not, could be silver or light grey ? as are the tyres.
