Reply to Flat 12×2. No photos unfortunately but friends dad seems to remember Typhoons or Tempests, possibly Furies and Harvards/Texans. I have a joystick grip from a Har/Tex. that he gave me.
Thanks
You might like to look at this thread, pics of the yard & some details of the aircraft in it in ’58 & ’60

Knowing that I have an interest in WWII era aircraft a friends father gave me some items he had collected. Post war he worked in a scrap yard nicknamed “Sandhurst Airport.” Apparently aircraft were flown into Blackbushe airport then trailered to the scrap yard to be broken up.

I would guess that that would have been Skylines (?) which was in Florence Rd. off Yorktown Rd. Collage Town near Sandhurst. The site is now the car park behind the present offices fronting Yorktown Rd. if you look at Sat. images on google maps.
When I visited it in the late ’70’s there were Harvard fusalages & Vampire/Venom wings in there.
Could you get any more info ? like how many aircraft they scrapped & what kinds ? & any pics. ?
Just too much fun….

But is it or isn,t it,sounds too revy to be a Merlin seeing they only go to 3 to 4 gran??.
That boat sounds & looks like the Barcardi Silver boat.
Here it is averaging 202 mph !!! over a kilometre on a river.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uBmJ2cuFTcE
It is powered by twin supercharged V8 Chevys, 1500 hp each (probably reving to about 6000rpm) & does not sound like supercharged V8s you would find at the drag strip , so sound is not everything.
..and ‘Hanover Street’…c1979.

Mark,I thought that was at Little Rissington ?
I think it might have been interesting to see what the Eagle could have produced if fully developed. The chances are that it would have broken the 4000hp barrier if the way the Merlin and Griffon were developed is any guide. The Merlin starteed out sub 1000hp and ended up at the bottom end of the Griffon power scale. The Griffon started at 1700+ and went up to nearly 2500. On that basis I would certainly expect to see 4000+ from a fully developed Eagle.
The Sabre was at 4000+hp in experimental form at the same time , so the Eagle should have produced a lot more for the extra 10 ltrs
Comparing like for like, H24 layout twin cranks, the Eagle v Sabre the Eagle is heavy 3900 v 2300 lb , same power 3500 hp but Sabre 36 ltrs (same as Griffon) v Eagle 46ltrs. So why didn’t they use the sabre in the Wyvern ?
Here you can see them, including a red one to the left…

If I recall correctly as you head south from Kemble to join the M4 aren’t there some hangers on the right (now an army base???) camoflaged just as Paul F describes …………………………..
These are the hangers at ex.RAF Hullavington, lots of detail pics http://www.atlantikwall.co.uk/atlantikwall/atlantikwall_html/001_atlantikwall_site/home.html
I knew someone would say that !
As I said they are new, so no history, and they are extreamely late Marks !Each one..Griffin Engined ! Experimental. Do the Spitfire Production Nos Add up ? I dont think so..

Oh where’s Mark 12 when you need him !
A starting bid of £36,000 required!;)
At current exchange rates ( £1 = 1.99 CAD ) the starting (reserve not met) bid is ‘only’ £25,100 , does your ‘wink’ mean you know that to meet the reserve a bid of £36,000 is required ?
Mark, you just ‘be good’ out there 😉
David,
I have had a look at what I think is Kamaran Island using Google Earth. It seems to be pretty flat, mostly sandy and, at its highest point, around 20 ft amsl. There does not appear to be any sign of an airfield left on it.
If you enter:
14 36 43 96N
42 54 47 47E
in Google, that should take you there. It’s around 179NM northwest of Aden.
Your coordinates are off, so you must have the wrong island
Try 15°20’24.87″N 42°36’0.95″E
The island is approx 10 x 4 miles ,right island but still no signs of an airfield.
If you google the island there are pics of the old airport & modern tourist pics.

Can someone tell me whereabouts that is? Want to try and GE it.
Its all in the WIX link above 😉
OK, so maybe not 4 this summer , but the first Oz. C-17 is due to fly later this month.
Boeing C-17 news
Great thread. many attempts to read all.
Back in the 70’s I seem to remember a few H-19 Chickasaws in a wooded area around the Bagshot, Sunningdale area?? in surrey. I was wondering if anyone can remember them. or what happened to them
How about Ascot ? only a few miles away , home of Staravia , they had a (I only ever saw one) H-19 / S-55 / Whirlwind ex. Spanish A.F in the yard in the mid to late ’70’s . It was faded/sun bleached dark green overall.
