Thanks

…………..Now the other three would make the ultimate Forum recovery project……..Flak Jackets anyone????
Seriously though if these were Spitfires I’m sure someone would have found a way to extract them by now.
Re. flak jackets, I to thought the same but have just come across these comments from the web. link.
So maybe its not so bad out there now.
“Asmara is possibly the safest African capital for travelers. It is one of the cleanest cities in Africa. The streets are elegantly lined with palms and a string of boutiques, coffee-shops and restaurants reminiscent of southern Italy.
Starting from 1999, I visited Asmara on a yearly basis, and I walked through the city almost every day. I experienced its beauty, both its tranquility and its activity, the hospitality and its friendliness of its people.”

Keep in mind that Google Earth images aren’t actual and could be over 5 years old.
My home was built in 2003 and it’s still not on Google Earth (although for a very brief period it was, oddly enough!)… and that’s the UK, which has a much better coverage.
Yes I’m aware of the age, I don’t know about 5 years old ,but up to 3 years old seems to be the norm.
Pics of the other derelict a/c T-33,F-86,C-119 & Migs. show them still there in June ’04
Asmara pics & info
Great pics,thanks
To put a date on them the Fortress II & Warwick ASR 1 are both 251 Sqn. based at Reykjavik from April ’45 to disbandment Oct.’45 & 251 only received Warwicks in Sep.’45
The other Warwick coded ‘RL’ is 38 Sqn. based Italy/Malta around that time.
Hi–
Four Firefly 1s were recovered from Eritrea (Asmara); two went to Canada and two to South Africa. The pair that came to Canada were DK545, now in storage at CAvM (Rockcliffe/Ottawa), and PP462, now under restoration to airworthy condition at the Shearwater Aviation Museum (Dartmouth NS). Both these are ex-RCN FR.1s. The pair that went to SAf were also ex-RCN, one FR.1 and one T.1 “double bubble” dual. IIRC one of those had a serial in the MB range (MB694??)..
Steve, could you be getting confused there ? Only 2 were recovered from Asmara ,Eritrea leaving the 3 behind in the pics.
The 2 recovered to South Africa (along with 2/3 Saab B17’s ) came from Addis ababa ,Ethiopia & I have been reported to now be in NZ.
At Asmara at one point circa the late 60s, though, there were at least six Firefly 1s–four “normal” ones and two duals–parked in the open there. I have copies of photos showing six different examples. I’ve long wondered whether those last two might still be awaiting rescue. Here’s hoping!
S.
Could you post the pics. please 🙂
Trivia for Appointment in London (1952)
According to Dirk Bogarde, the character of Tim Mason was based on Wing Commander Guy Gibson who led the Dambusters raid in May 1943. Gibson was at one stage the commanding officer of 106 squadron and one of the flight commanders was Squadron Leader John Wooldridge, co-writer and composer for “Appointment in London”.The movie was filmed at RAF Upwood. The Lancaster’s used were NX673 NX679 NX782 These aircraft also took part in the filming of _Dambusters, The (1954)_ two years later…..

Hello everyone
Does anyone out there know of any surviving SR-71 wrecks in US boneyards? I doubt they would survive for long due to the titanium in them, but just wondering…
Thanks
Elliott
Have any been scraped ? considering how few there were ,like Concorde, when retired I would guess they all went to museums

Isn’t that the nose from Canada, brought over to help in the restoration of another Cat. ?
Well if you would like one for yourself , here’s the start of a project, still in N.Africa as in the pics which were only taken a few years ago.
…………… As for Thurleigh and Little Staughton not being aligned, it’s not far off and Thurleigh is a cracking landmark for finding Little Staughton – fly along Thurleigh’s runway heading and LS will turn up very shortly dead ahead..
Google earth can really come into its own for pics. like this.
As is said , a picture’s worth a thousand words, Thurleigh in the distance
40 odd years ago Percy Sheppard bought Spitfire TD135 from the MoD for a reported £25.
This was sited at the pub at Upperhill.
It has currently gone to ground in Belgium.

Is that the same one in the background of the first B/W print, MkXIV clipped wing coded U-NG ?
I’ve been a Warbirds enthusiast since 1972 when my father bought a B-25 and used it to haul diesel fuel in the high Arctic. …………………….

Sorry to go of on a tangent , but you cant join a forum with an opening statement “my dad brought a B-25 & used it…” with out expanding e.g did you fly in it, its history, pics, has it survived etc.
are yes , you must have grow up in a normal everyday family !
