    Welcome Paul and thanx for the pix link. The museum would love copies if possible?

    I spent a few hours trying to remove the fwd wing bolts and finishing the tidying job. We have a number of the seat call/light panels which are likely to be sold to raise money for her restoration/presentation. They are delightful items.

    The carry thru spar corrosion is little short of epic and some of the worst I have ever seen on a static aircraft. To give scale I scooped up a tiny part of the exfoliation/corrosion. Not nice when whipped up by the wind and breathed in!

    Same went for Broomhandle mausers and Mr Solo!

    The Hanningfield Metals yard also did prop destruction. It would be shipped back with copious amounts of sand. Weird seeing prop bits mixed with aircraft stuff!

    Sorry to revive this yet again, but we are now in 7th year of the dig. We are doing a presentation at the the RAeS in March on the great man. Details have proven difficult to find. He was also know as ‘Sam’. He spent some war years in Washington on lendlease aircraft.

    The first Indy film has a Boeing yoke in that Lufty futuristic plane, B707 me thinx.

    In the past, prop buyers used to buy from my stall at Aerojumbles – the weirdest stuff. Helicopter PSPs were used in Tomorrow Never Dies (The one with the Russian submarines) with cyrillic writing as escape units – I have one somewhere.

    The guy who provided those worked on numerous Bond movies. He also built a Batmobile for a Keaton movie using major lumps of Gnat.

    I have a B8 grip that was modded for use on a Mad Max movie.

    It was a lucky break! I saw it on Ebay a few years back, labelled as from a Scimitar. I chased it (as did someone else), amazingly, I won.

    It would have been an amazing aircraft if it had gone into service. Hey ho – stupid government.

    What I would do (and have done on my extensive wheel collection), is get the hubs bead blasted to remove all corrosion. I would then use a suitable primer (2pack etch primer or indeed LAS does one in a spray can (Light Aero Spares)). I then use ‘wheel steel’ or aluminum alloy paint (any decent auto stockist).

    I would suggest not keeping them outside! If you do wish to, then you may wish to pop another primer on top of the etch before the silver.

    It was disgusting how this hero was treated. He and his team saved 100s of 1000s of lives and shortened the war. I wonder how much the people of the late 40s/early 50s knew of his work? I am normally no a fan of revisionism and judging older times thru ‘new’ eyes – however, I cannot believe such a hero, or gay people in general, were treated in that way.

    It is also Issue 1, Serial No. 1. I have never seen that ever on a grip plate…not even my SR53 or DH110 grips

    I, for one, would be willing to contribute practical and financial help to any recovery. Must try our hardest, its the least we can do, and if found, This hero needs a proper burial.
