Has Kalina dropped by here to read this further info I wonder? Just checked – she does not appear to have any activity since June last year – can a moderator contact her by e-mail and alert her to the new posts – I am sure she would love to read them, particularly the lengthy and detailed recollections from several people who knew her Dad personally.
Are there any mechanical bits that you just can’t get anymore, or has every major assembly been remanufactured by now too?
ie throttle box, chassis control, undercarriage legs, pintels, cylinders.
What about prop hubs, are these still hens teeth?
Most parts have been remanufactured at some point over the years – Dowty made some new prop hubs for Charles Church in the late 1980’s – but they are indeed very rare and expensive. Its still more desirable to source original items where they are available and that is the reason why I suspect that u/c retract units have not beed re-maunfactured – neither have u/c legs to my knowledge (although it has been done for the Hurricane). U/C pintles are avialable new. Prop blades are almost always new (manufactured by Hoffman of Germany).
Some nice photos posted there – they seem quite small though – can they be enlarged?
and what do the experts say and it’s over to you then mark v:D
If I find one I will ask him – as far as I can see its bloody fantastic and I have sent personal congratulations to TFC’s Bentwingbomber 🙂
Magnificent effort – it really does look stunning – well done to everyone concerned! 🙂
Pictures are superb – I really enjoy them too. Roobarb seems to have summarised the matter perfectly!
Maybe we need a ‘Duxford Update’ section! 🙂
An awful lot of Merlins were built – something like 150,000 IIRC…
Agreed, although I don’t quite know why a machine with a Battle of France history is 700,000 UKP cheaper than G-HURI?
Steve.
Perhaps because its a ‘bargain’?
..I’ll take a Hurri any day. 🙂
Good timing – there are two for sale on Platinum Fighters – this and the NZ example, always good to have a choice 🙂
I thought it was excellent – we had a lot of fun being part of it. Not sure about my future as an actor though….
Looks good to me. Great pics: is that a new build FW or an original Fw?
Roger
New build FW-190. There is only one original example that you might find sitting on an airport ramp in that condition!
If you wait for better photos from the experts, you may see the scheme to better advantage.

Provided it doesnt rain 😀 well done Roobs – very eye-catching!!
There was a picture floating around of the wreckage post crash and it didnt make comfortable viewing.
Yes there was – and it was desperately sad to see it. There were, as I recall some very significant airframe components remaining, as M12 said – a good basis for a re-build – after a suitable elapsed time of course.
It is – also including input from Flt.Lt Jimmy Taylor of 16 Sqdn and ground and air -to-air footage of Spitfire PR.XI PL965.
It will be noted that all of the American registered warbirds that were operating here have been transferred to the UK register….
Bruce
That was certainly the way things were going – although don’t forget P-51 Miss Velma at Duxford flies on an N reg, as does the Sea Fury T.20.
