I think the ace you’re thinking of is Romanian-born Alexander Vraciu. He was America’s top scoring ace for a time IIRC. I’d always thought there was more of Vraciu’s original machine to her than just the centre-section-is this not so?
There’s an excellent article in last month’s edition of ‘The Other’ magazine about the resoration of F-AZJU by Robert Roger and his team.Excellent Database on Concorde aswell, get hold of a copy if you can.
Do you mean the Hellcat or the Wildcat? The Wildcat still flies in a Fleet Air Arm scheme, but I’m not sure that TFC’s Hellcat has ever worn FAA markings.
I could be wrong,but it doesn’t ring any bells…
Cheers Flood, that’s just the stuff I was looking for.I’ve posted the guy a link to this page,so hopefully he’ll be able to thank you in person later. 🙂
Judging by the myriad of types and the fact that there are so many civvys milling about,I’d guess that this picture was taken on an Empire Air Day.Were these events widespread or held at more specific locations?I’m just wondering if it might narrow the location down a bit…
Hi Anne,
Glad you liked the pictures.I had wondered if it really was a Hart, but I’m none too good at telling Harts/Hinds/Demons etc apart. Thanks!
If you do decide to go into London, the Science Museum at South Kensington (easy access on Piccadily Line) and the Imperial War Museum at Lambeth (5 minutes walk from Waterloo station) are both well worth a visit.
This Sunday is also Remembrance Day,with the traditional ceremony and mass marchpast at the Cenotaph in Whitehall and the guns firing in Hyde Park, which is quite a spectacle.Perhaps the Cenotaph then onto the IWM?
Good luck with the bag of chips…;)
*bump*
Hi Philo,
Could you post up some useful e-mail or snail mail addresses we can write to? Eg YAM,Local Yorkshire press etc
Ahhh no,I know the one you’re thinking of though. That was ‘Robbie Coltrane’s Planes,Trains and Automobiles’,which was first screened about 6 or 7 years ago now,but still gets aired on digital, cable etc.Think some of the filming they did for the programme was the best footage we’ll see of Black 6 in action.
Them were the days,lad…
Hi Lancman,
I agree with you about the Brunel programme that Clarkson did,but I find he tends to be a bit unpredictable,so you never know what angle he’s going to come at something from.Sounds very promising judging by what you say about his RT piece. 🙂
You’re quite right Ian,he’s said to have been a gay or bisexual crossdresser and a lover of Noel Coward.
Excellent stuff Snapper-WhipperSnapper certainly seems to have got the hang of flying a Mustang!! 😀
Great pics of what was obviously a great day, cheers for sharing them you lucky sod! 😎
Pic comes through fine for me. 🙂 Looks great overall, just wish they’d change that area of camo that follows the line of the access panel on the rear fuselage,it doesn’t look natural.Mustn’t be picky…
IIRC,this was the Hurricane which was swapped 30+ years ago for the Typhoon which now resides at Hendon.LF686 had sat outdoors on gate guard duties for years,so she wasn’t quite in the condition the Smithsonian was hoping for. It’s taken an awful lot of work to get her to the condition she is in now,so the NASM certainly got the thin end of the wedge on that deal!
I agree with AT6 that it would’ve been nice if they could’ve been kept flying,or atleast one.Ah well. 🙁
What I’m wondering, and excuse me for sounding like a stuck record on this,is why Brooklands didn’t get one.It seems utterly stupid to take one to Grantley-effing-Adams Airport when there is an appropriate museum just a few miles away! They built the biggest sections of Concorde at Weybridge for goodness sake! Putting a Concorde on display there would in a way be taking one back to it’s birthplace, and it would have a reasonably secure future. You can’t get much more of an appropriate home than that surely?
Did Brooklands apply for one and get turned down or did they decide they didn’t want one?For the life of me I can’t think why they ended up not getting one…
I’d heard the Norwiegan Broussard suffered serious damage in a ground loop a few weeks ago,is this true,or perhaps it was another european example?
I saw the Dakota at Flying Legends, and she looks amazing. The time and trouble the Dakota Norway guys must go to just to keep up that shiny finish in the european climate!I got chatting to a couple of the Dakota Norway groundcrew whilst waiting for the bus to Cambridge at the end of Saturday, and very friendly and good humoured they were too, they brought a smile to my face at the end of what was afterall a pretty tragic day. Thanks guys!
