If you shoot down a lot of enemy fighters then you are a good fighter pilot and would make a great ace, but if you are losing the battle that’s another story.

But, if apart from your own score you train other pilots in the unit and let them achieve many victories themselves so as to boost the units effective kill ratio (and making a difference in the battle between Allies and Axis) then you are an excellent ace. I believe Johnnie Johnson fits in this category.

Just to put some oil on the fire

Perhaps Elliott knows more as he has done a lot of research into the Whitley.

    Ant,

I think Ryan is more referring to a Marauder than a Baltimore (unfortunately) but I would like to be proven wrong of course. Tallichet sold his flyable Marauder to Kermit Weeks some years ago, I believe he has a static one under restoration IIRC.

    Hi Peter,

Congratulations that you have finally found the last missing item. From a Lancaster?

Is this Dutch guy Ad van Zantvoort by any chance?

    Cheers

I have it on tape from last evening and I now see it on the BBC website.

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to save the clip from the website to my PC?

The programme certainly triggered a memory for me.

They showed all the ‘black out’ screens being thrown out after VE day. These were wooden frames covered with thick black paper and stapled on. They would be put in all window apertures at dusk to prevent enemy intruders from seeing built up areas for navigation.

At the end of WWII I remember my father and uncle holding these up, one at a time, for me to dutifully ‘burst’ through with much joy.

Put your calculator away HP57/Cees, I’m 13 years younger than Ray Hanna. 🙂

    :p 🙂

It took us five years to finish the investigation of a 300 sqn Lancaster. But we were successful in giving five former missing Polish aircrew a deserving burial at Breda, and they are no longer missing.

    Breaking news!!!!

Arthur Harris just confirmed that he wants all Halifaxes taken out of squadron service and replaced by a new aircraft called the Lancaster.

    Mmmmm

I would think that if it is restored, the only thing reminding us that it was Brewster built is it’s designation and serialnumber. Or Mr Cralley is a stickler for accuracy but then again it would not be wise to fly it without a very good life insurance.

Hi Cees, Well I had a look around today and the only one I can find is this one. It isn’t the same one as quoted in our repair manual though as the dial has different markings. Checking back on the records we have only ever repaired one that fits your Pt. no exactly and that was for Air Atlantique in 1994, I assume for one of their Daks (they didn’t give a reg.) Anyway if this one is any good you can probably have it but I’ll have to check with the boss tomorrow. I could send you a copy of the manual page that shows the instrument so you know what a 6A/2136 looks like? Anyway sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

    Hi Keithjs,

Don’t be so hard on yourself, it actually looks very much like the flap indicator in the pilot’s notes for the Mk’s II/V III/VII and VI. So if your boss is willing to let it go I’m game.

    Cheers

Hi KeithJS and 682Al (glad to see you back again)

    Thanks for the replies.

Well it doesn’t have to be work as it is for my Halifax panel. The flap indicator I have at present is more applicable to the Lancaster.

Al, the photo you show looks to be a more modern version I seem to remember on photographs. of Halifax panels, but this is the AM ref.nr as quoted on the official Halifax drawing so must be correct I gather.

    Thanks to you both

    Cees or Elliott,

I don’t find Flypast magazine very often here in Vancouver. What edition will the Whitley Project be published in?

    Cheers,

    Todd

    Hi Todd,

It’s in the latest edition (June?)
