West Virginia National Air Guard !

    lindoug:

After the war many of the P-51’s flown by the 352nd FG of the 8th Air Force went to the West Virginia Air National Guard. I had a book around here somewhere and If I can find it ..will scan some photos….. in fact they kept their WW II colors on the cowlings and props. Can’t recall the name of the book but a web search might be in order…………. good luck on your research !

Andy thanks for the info & book link !

    Andy:

Thank You for the book link and info… really enjoyed the documentary and the way it was put together. Work in television news over here in the states and can see your team put in much time and effort on this very outstanding program. Some first class detective work on the program as to what really happened on that day. A most complex individual the Wing Commander was. A friendly fire situation in the heat of combat ! Found the book and look forward to reading it. Congrats on your past work in recovering aircraft wrecks and giving the pilots helmet at the conclusion of the program to his widow….. a fine gesture indeed ! Perhaps one day you’ll be able to find that Spitifire ! In some ways Wing Commader Bader & Maj George E Preddy Jr of the 352nd shared a similar fate..botjh downed by friendly fire in the heat of combat. Sadly the Major case was fatal. Continued success in your work…… again thanks for taking us along on a great mystery !

Thanks for update Forum members !

Thanks and hope the project comes through…a much needed addition to any WW II aviation library…a rare individual who needs to be remembered. I noted on the fine Uk television series ” Time Team”… they had a great show on the digging up of Spitfire in a small French Village … and if I remember correctly the young British Spitfire Pilot was shot down on his first mission and flew in the same squardon as Roger Bushell. Hope the book come to use soon !

    Thanks !

Thanks Moggy for the update on Bodney !

Flypast forum members…. BlueNoser352 here saying thanks for posting the great photos of the Sagan program and photos and memories from the past..just glad to see this event being remembered. Just today to show how history still lives on.. I was coming out of the library here in Spartanburg SC USA I saw and elderly gentlemen getting out of his car wearing a sweater with a P-51 on the front. Upon introducing myself .the older man was a WW II Eighth AF B-17 pilot from the Triangle C boys from Molesworth. Shot down in Jan of 1944. He did have some time in a Mustang during his time in the UK.
We had nice talk and I hope to meet with him later on to pay my respects.
Moggy thanks as always for your words on the control tower at Bodney..will pass them on to several BlueNoser veterans I know here ! I know they will welcome any news on their former base !

A film on The Berlin Airlift !

While there are several excellent documentaries on the history of the airlift itself..one great possible story line for a movie might be the great story of “The Candy Bomber”…Hal Halvorsen…he was a USAAF C-47 pilot that started the whole deal of dropping candy to the children on the ground in small parachutes. The brass wanted him to stop ..but he keep on doing it and then other crews did as well. Many today in Berlin remember him and the wonderful gifts he dropped from this C-47 as he flew into Berlin. I see there is a book out about this history of the Berlin Airlift. Which I feel today remains a great victory for the Ailles over the worthless Soviets & that loser Joe Stalin!

    BlueNoser352 checking in :

Great to see the many replies to this topic and knew I could count on this fine group to offer up some good post on The Great Escape. Nice & very proper to see we continue to remember this brave band of airmen who risked all to regain their freedom and take a fight to the Nazi’s despite the deck really stacked against them. I am sure many of you have seen the outstanding documentary that is on the extra’s disc ..on the dvd The Greatest Escape release I think back in 2004. Tells the very sobering story of the demise of the 50 and how the Allies did their best to track down those responsible and render them proper justice. The film still gets many plays here in the US and has always been on of my favorites …despites its historical flaws . It did lead me to research and read all I could on the event in March of 1944. These men without question were very brave and resourceful.. God Bless their Memory ! Always enjoy reading the marvelous post here on this historical forum….. … thanks again from the Colonies !!!!!

    Spitfire Sale…….. wow big $$$$$

World War II Spitfire Sells for $1.9 Million in New Zealand

    By Gavin Evans

Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) — A World War II Spitfire fighter, one of fewer than 60 still flying worldwide, sold for NZ$2.8 million ($1.9 million) at an auction in Nelson, New Zealand today.

The aircraft, a 1945 Mk. XVI variant of the fighter made famous during the Battle of Britain, was bought by North China Shipping Holdings Co. Chairman Yan-Ming Gao at the sale at Nelson’s museum of Wearable Art & Classic Cars. He plans to donate the fighter to the China Aviation Museum in Beijing.

Demand from collectors keen to own a flying piece of aviation history is sustaining a global industry of amateur archeologists and engineers scouring museums and crash sites for parts to restore and include in rebuilt planes. Provenance Fighter Sales, a specialist aircraft broker based in Murietta, California, sold 13 aircraft in 2007, including three Spitfires.

“I don’t want to see the Spitfire go,” Don Subritzky, an Auckland engineer whose family has restored the aircraft the past 11 years, said before the sale. “Basically, we need to get some money in to fund the completion of a few of the other aircraft we’ve got here.”

Subritzky has nearly completed a 1936 Hawker Hind biplane. Other airframes waiting to be restored include a rare Vickers Vildebeest biplane, a twin-engined Airspeed Oxford and a Gloster Meteor jet.

The Spitfire sold today started life with Britain’s Royal Air Force in June, 1945. After postwar service with the nation’s air force reserve it was donated to the U.S. Air Force Museum at Dayton, Ohio. It was sold to private collectors in 1996.

    `Spitfires in Particular’

“Spitfires are a very well-known fighter of the Second World War,” said Gao, who has an interest in military history. “It made a great contribution to the winning of the Second World War,” he said through an interpreter.

The plane was the main attraction among 15 vintage and racing cars offered by Bonhams & Goodman, the Australian unit of London-based Bonhams. It is believed to be the first Spitfire sold at auction since the 1960s, Bonhams & Goodman Chief Executive Officer Tim Goodman said.

“Warbirds in general and Spitfires in particular only ever seem to go up in value,” said Steve Vizard, managing director of U.K.-based Airframe Assemblies Ltd., which is currently restoring six Spitfires. “Despite the so-called global economic crisis and the credit crunch and all that, it would seem that people who can afford to have this as their hobby, or their passion, can still afford them.”

Rebuilding a Spitfire, regardless of condition, takes about three years and costs about 1 million pounds ($1.8 million), Vizard said. Once flying, a later mark would typically sell for about $3.5 million, while an early model, with proven history in the Battle of Britain, might fetch twice as much, he said.

Including commission, Gao will pay just under NZ$3.2 million for the aircraft. He also bought a 1914 Daimler Tourer, a 1930 Rolls Royce Sedanca De Ville, and a 1898 De Dion Bouton today.

Night Flight 2002 BBC program !

A bit more about the program…..

The taking off of the Lancaster bombers was filmed at an old RAF Bomber Command station at East Kirkby in Lincolnshire, England. This is now a privately owned museum. One Lancaster was actually used for the ground shots, one of only four left in the U.K. The aeroplane used was ‘Just Jane’NX611 (displayed at the East Kirkby museum) and as it is not airworthy, it was only allowed to race ‘tail wheel up’ along the runway at 80mph for 10 seconds before powering down. The pilot for the taxi-ing was a pilot with the R.A.F. Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The scenes where the Lancaster is seen flying, footage of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster PA474 is used.

One viewer thought so much of the program…..made a poster about the BBC documentary…..pretty good! Looks like a very good cast as well .

During the Second World War, 76 prisoners of war escaped through a 323-foot man-made tunnel from Stalag III, Luft Waffe Camp in Sagan, Germany (now Zagan, Poland). All but three of the escapees were recaptured and 50 were executed contrary to the Geneva Convention. Stalag III housed over 10,000 prisoners of war from around the world.
