The March 4,1944 mission to Berlin !

Here is Leon Blanding of the 4th FG, upon return from his long range escort mission to Berlin in his P-51. He wrote these notes on the back of the photo, “Nobody’s guns would fire, brand new Mustangs with much malfunction” He says he was not happy to see this camera stuck in his face upon return and told the photographer “to get it out of my face”! ( well words to that effect). Looks like a B model P-51 to me !

The Memphis Belle new 60th DVD release !

There is a new historical release of the 1943 William Wyler documentary, the original film has been digitally restored and all the unused outtakes from the documentary have been included in the new 2 Disc version. Plus all the footage from the Memphis Belle bond tour after Capt Morgan and his crew came home and did a nation wide tour. It runs about four hours , found my copy on amazon. Here is a link from Col Rober k Morgan’s website !

    Cat7

Cat7 if you can find any works on the 357th fighter group, this Mustang belong to this group and there are many photographs in most books I have seen on the market abou this particular group. Also I believe the Discovery Channel sells a VHS or maybe a DVD of this very program. I bought a VHS tape here in states on this very program called ” ESCORT TO BERLIN” about the role the P-51 played in escorting USAAF B-24’s & B-17’s into Germany !
Hope this helps, Ospery books also have some excellent titles on Mustangs in the ETO during WWII. American Ace Chuck Yeager flew with this group during the war ! Glad to hear you son enjoys models and like warbirds…sounds like you guys need a trip to Duxford to see the real thing !

    Hope this helps !

Thanks Mark….that some item you have !

    Mark:

Yes, guess both these men lived each day and each minute in WWII like it was their last day on earth. Mutal respect is what I did witness on that day during their time together. Its sometime hard to believe that Germany and our two nations fought two massive global wars in the last century. Now are joined by many common virtues and economic reasons. Here in South Carolina where I live in the USA , there are now many German firms doing business and of course we have a huge BMW plant here that makes the X5 and the new Z4 Roadster. 60 plus years ago BMW was making parts for the Luftwaffe ! Much better relations in this century !

Thanks Mike J for the note, wish Duxford would get an operational ME-109 again. I remember the great air display back in a few years ago, seeing my frist look at Black Six flying at Duxford on a October day beside a Spitfire. Needless to say it was a thrill
to hear that Damler-Benze engine along side the Merlin. Still hoping to one day see an operational Mossie at Duxford, what a shame one is not flying these days! Thanks again !

More Info on the photo of Capt Starnes getting medal!

The information that sparky ask about the photo of Capt Stanes being awarded a medal is , A French General awarding Capt Jim Starnes the
Croix De Guerre. Spoke with the Colonel tonight by phone and he is doing well and was delighted to hear that I shared these photos with the members of this fine forum. I know from talking to many 339th men, their respect and love of the British people they meet during the war and on their many returns to Fowlmere is very strong. They are getting together this Oct in Tampa, Flordia for another reunion. I also spoke to Stephen C. Ananian who flew “Baby Mine” with the 339th and got one ME-262 and damaged another. He now writes the groups newsletter and is having his gun camera footage and some movie footage he shot with a camera he carried in this Mustang , put out on DVD. I will post a link and update when this become available. I count myself a lucky man just to speak with men like this , its 2005 and I am talking to the men who did these brave feats now 60 plus years on !

    Thanks!

    Top fighter ace !

Well going by sheer numbers…hartman (352) but on the American list no **** Bong, Thomas J McGuire, George Preddy Jr. There is no end to this debate among air historians. Hartman’s numbers are so mind boggling!!!! This topic is always good for a great discussion.

    Photos from BlueNoser352

Thanks Jimmy, well if you go back on the forum a couple of links, you’ll find three topics I started…one is photographs from the life of Major George E.Preddy Jr, 352 FG Mustang ace…….some nose art jacket photo’s from the 401st BG…on of my favorite aviation historical topics…..a link to Col Jim Starnes of the 339th FG, a 12 victory ace who flew “Tar Heel” , named in honor of my home state …North Carolina. I’ve been collecting 8th photos for many years and thought the fine group here would enjoy them. Plus I got a new scanner and finally figured out who to use the darn thing…!!!!! I don’t think I have any from Nuthampstead, but I will check ! I am going to round up all my 8th AF nose jacket photos and start a link here..I find this stuff amazing and there is a great story behind every jacket or aircraft as to how the named their plane. I really enjoy this board and forum because those here really know their aviation history and espically that of the second world war.
By the way…at age 51 and a rock & roll lover…did you sing in a famous band at one time????? Will check on that Nuthampstead request.

Martin You are amazing!!!! Thanks Mike J !

LOL….Martin I knew when I saw that post I bet you had that photo, I believe I am all out of 339th photos. Maybe I will call up Stephen Anaian, who flew “Baby Mine” and get some more photos of the 339th. He of course got one Me-262 late in the war and damaged another. He now is the publisher of the groups news letter these days. Mike J , thanks for the name of the Pub in Fowlmere. One thing about WWII photographs, its a blessing for all of us in that from all my talking to Eighth veterans over the years , cameras were around these bases and each group had GI’s assigned to run base photo labs for offical and “unoffical” photo’s. So now with the war being over some 60 plus years , new private collections are coming onto the market for us to enjoy! Glad to see someone out there in enjoys looking at old WWII photographs on the site as much as I do. Martin thanks for the scan of Marinell.
Have a good day men !!!!
