Haven’t been for about 15 years but, crowded apart, it was certainly worth a couple of hours.
Had a guided tour of the Sandringham. Apparently it’s last owner/pilot was the husband of Maureen O’Hara the actress. The guide pointed out her ashtray and drinks holder screwed to the seat behind the pilot.
We went from there and saw the Sunderland moored at Hythe, the only time I ever saw it.

He should buy the book, and sell us what we want. That’d be easier!
Novel suggestion. Not sure it would still be a raffle then.
Assuming by some strange coincidence we do manage to meet at Duxford, we can discuss Old Warden then. I haven’t been for 18 years, they’ve probably moved things.
No contest – Alexis.
I’ll be the tall, not quite so tubby, hairy one in a Malta T shirt. Since I’ve got a couple seems an ideal time to wear one.
I will also be late, because I always am. Merlin70’s idea of a few meeting times sounds good to me. I’m far too old to run around Duxford looking for a bunch of weirdos.
Raffle on the night is a better idea, I’ll leave you lot to argue about the recipients of the proceeds.
Adam, we don’t have centers in this country, we leave that to Americans.
PS Alexis did buy half the tickets!
Best laid plans and all that…
Becka, are you going to enlighten us or do we search when we get there?
What forelock, Robbo?
Although a huge fan of anything DH, (born and lived in Hertfordshire until about 15 years ago) I don’t profess any indepth knowledge. Lots of books though!
I’ve never heard of any problems with DH props returning themselves to component form on anything else. Could it be the vibration from the Gipsy Majors? I don’t know of any other 4 cylinder applications, but I’m prepared to be educated.
Myself and Mrs DHfan will be there.
I think Steve Young and Moggy were threatening to be around as well.
Sorry to jump in on a purely NZ thread… 🙂
As far as I know, all RAF transports have rear-facing seats and have done since somebody proved, many years ago, that it was much safer in crashes and, presumably, heavy landings.

In fact, there are very few parts which are common to the two aeroplanes. I was originally under the impression that the Beaufighter and Beaufort do share some assemblies – tail assemblies being the ones I was interested in – but having measured and checked the mountings and positions, they are also both different animals.
🙁
The original plan was to use Beaufort wings and tailfeathers with a new design fuselage. That probably explains why the Beaufighter took longer than expected to design and build.
Saves me asking what the timing is for the Sunset shows.
We were coming anyway but Old Speckled Hen to hand reinforces it.
Don’t think Duxford beforehand’s very likely as although Mrs DHfan has very good aeroplane tolerance, only a week after Merlins over Malta would be pushing it. 🙂
I take very little, or to be more accurate, none at all, persuasion to go to a pub, expecially the Red Lion at Whittlesford Station.
However with a 2 hour journey each way I don’t think Saturday and Sunday are feasible.
I hope they’ve got plenty of roadkill in for Sunday. I’m not going without this time.
The steam-coooled RR engine was the Goshawk, a variant of the Kestrel. Substantially less than successful.
There’s a picture in Bill Gunston’s Aero Engine Encyclopedia of a nuclear-powered gas turbine. In appearance, two engines, one each side of a central reactor.
Apparently, there was a suggestion that one of the Saro Princesses was to be used as a nuclear testbed. I have no proof that this was any more than a rumour and haven’t got a clue who told me, but it was when they still existed!
I haven’t seen any of them, but I do have “play animations” disabled somewhere in the bowels of Internet Explorer.
As long as you haven’t changed any settings they should be visible.
The current Dominies are de Havilland, whatever they want to call them. 🙂
